Their debut album came out this year, entitled Why There Are Mountains. All reviews I've seen have been positive, and several refer to it as "epic", and they are often compared to Modest Mouse and Built to Spill. The opening track sounds like something off of The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me.
Get listening!

Listen to "And the Hazy Sea". You're going to like it. I promise.

Yeah, they have a total disregard for choruses which is also kind of refreshing.

Definitely. It may take a couple spins, but Why There Are Mountains should definitely grow on you.

As with other genres, look past the hype artists and you'll find quite a few acts worth your time.

Edit: oh shiii

Been listening to them for a while now, and I really enjoy the album. I appreciate the diversity, but I am certain they could have been chart toppers if they wanted to. I woke up with a "hook" on my mind one morning, and couldn't for the love of me figure out which song it was until it dawned on me that it was from Wind Phoenix. And that was many days after I had I last listened to the album.

And that's that for this post's funny anecdote.

I also have no idea what any of lyrics to any of the songs mean, and I like it.

And lastly, I think Cold Spring is possibly my "favourite" off the album so far. I think it's fantastic.

Yeah, it seems like an album you'd really like. It's so hard to find it though, as it's only sold in Japan, England, and a few different states. Really frustrates me that two of my favourite albums of the year have been self-released, and therefore incredibly difficult to get a copy of.

The band made a pretty good, inspired album that has a lot of depth to it. Are there any bands in the same vein as them that you enjoy more?

I'm never gonna get to hear the whole thing then, because I always hold off until I own it. I could buy it digitally, but frankly, that's bullshit and if all I'm going to get is a file, I'd rather steal it.

Really? I'm surprised to hear that. I find it to have a lot of depth with its relatively chaotic structures, he's a decent lyricist, and there's quite a bit of variation on their debut, too.

It's not terrible, it's just...there. Even with the thorough mediocrity of 09, I never come back to Why There Are Mountains when I feel like listening to something new.

Yeah, it's NOT* incredible. I happen to like the aesthetic of it quite a bit, but I wouldn't argue that there's anything legitimately special about it.

it's not the best album of 09 by any means, but it fucking rules. and the hazy sea is one of the best openers i've heard in a long time. it's just a great indie rock record, and you only get two or three of those every year anymore.

So, I randomly did a search on Amazon.ca, and found a preorder for their album for September 29! I can only assume this means it's being made properly available to purchasers, which is excellent news for me and means I will finally get to hear the whole album.
