View Full Version : Old Guy wants music suggestions ;)

Okay so I'm always running into little things here and there that I like alot but needless to say, I'm out of touch. There are three genres I am very much interested in for sake of expansion of knowledge.

Firstly....Emo. (Yeah I said it!)
I really like Mineral (rest in peace) and Thursday but know next to nothing about the genre. Any experts out there have a few more suggestions for me? And I don't want pop shit. I want the real deal.

Secondly....Metal.
I'm a metalhead from way back, though I've obviously calmed down a bit, but every now and then I need that power. The latest band I've gotten into is Lamb of God. Looking for more suggestions.

Lastly....Goth.
First thing I guess I need to know, is this genre dead? (pun intended) I LOVE all the old stuff from Joy Division to Siouxsie to (pseudo-Goth) Manson. Can anyone help me out with this?

I just need some new music in my life. You listen to the same shit for thirty years and you get really bored.

By the way, I'll take other suggestions from other genres you may think I find interesting. Clue: I worship Sonic Youth.

Iron Maiden (unless you already listen to them, then awesome)
The Sword

Genghis Tron

I guess I could post a couple hardcore bands that definitely include a few elements of metal

not to hot on Goth but if you enjoy Joy Division you could like music from:
Blonde Redhead
Portishead
The Knife's album "Silent Shout"
Cold Cave
Liars
M83's album "Saturday's = Youth"
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Asobi Seksu

The members of the band (SP) site Sonic Youth as a huge influence, and when they first began playing shows, they thought they would draw Sonic Youth comparisons, not the Smashing Pumpkins that they actually get.

Most of the time, people are pretty helpful in the music forum, if you show a legitimate interest in our music. Be aware of the general forum though, if you want to avoid being ridiculed.

See, Id consider Neutral Milk Hotel both emo and indie. Emo is completely different for every person. Some think bands like Hawthorne Heights and My Chemical Romance are emo, but for me, emo is more along the lines of melodic instrumentals with meaningful lyrics. Both NMH and TM put their true feelings into their songs. Which is why referring to The Microphones and Neutral Milk hotel as a form of emo makes sense to me. If you think different, that's fine, because emo is most likely much different in your opinion.

How is this misleading? I may have labelled them wrong, because I don't care about what genre it is, and never have cared about genres, because frankly it doesn't matter. If it sounds good, and I enjoy it, Im going to listen to it, not because it's in a certain genre.

Does it really matter what they're labelled as? Do you listen to music solely based on what it is labelled as? Yeah, looking back I definitely labelled almost every one of those wrong, but I really don't think it matters.
And the Sonic Youth thing,
The band's sound, often encompassing multiple overdubs of distorted guitars, is frequently compared to that of The Smashing Pumpkins, while the band members have said they are heavily influenced by artists such as My Bloody Valentine, the Velvet Underground, Elliott Smith, Sonic Youth, Sweet, Modest Mouse, and Secret Machines as well as numerous other artists with lesser publicity; especially "by songs like 'Rhinoceros' from Gish by The Smashing Pumpkins and 'The Diamond Sea' from 'Washing Machine' by Sonic Youth" (Nikki Monninger).

I never really heard it either, but it's what I read.

it matters because someone is asking for a specific kind of music. following your logic, if someone asked for techno i could be like "listen to slayer", because slayer fucking rules and genres don't matter.

Okay my hand is cramping now. I wrote everything down that was suggested by everyone, whether argued against or not. I HAVE to look at Silversun Pickups now, you know, because being a longtime fan of Sonic Youth, I will be the judge of that comparison. I like their song on Rock Band 2...I don't remember the name of it. It seems like it reminded me of The Strokes. Maybe that was someone else in the game. I don't know. I could be confused. But I like The Strokes so that will work...if that's who it was. Ah hell, I'll just go play the game and find out.

AND SLAYER DOES FUCKING RULE!
