If you're in a small band (or are just interested in the music industry) and are looking for some advice: read these articles (http://web.archive.org/web/20041010071333/www.thescout.net/myth.html) written by TheScout.net (http://www.thescout.net) a while back.

Well written, good advice. It pretty much sums up the whole book I just read.

Wow these are real old. Thats really cool you posted about them though. These are good for smalls bands that have big ego's

Yah, they're old (haha to bands thinking they could hop on FOB shows now)...had to go on archive.org to look em up, but I felt it was worth it.

The articles may be old, but they're still as relevant as ever (just switch out some of those band names).

my advice is its too late to start anything now if you want to be serious...the scene is flooded with way to many bands and the chances of you getting huge unless you have something totally original are very slim.

It all depends on your area, like if you're good and from Toronto it isn't that hard to get signed to a good canadian indie. There aren't very many good bands here, most of the really good ones are in the suburbs and even there there aren't that many.

good read, i agree with all of this. You don't know how many bands i've ran into on the road who "know" this guy who's gonna get them on this warped tour stage, or we are "talking" with drive thru and things are looking good, and it's all a bunch of ego's and warped realities of bands who really on the grand scheme have done little to NO impressive feats, with half original or good songs.

great article. all of it was kinda comon sense for me personaly now. but its great to know that were on the right track, at least in that aritcles theroy.
tho, its alot more complicated then what he said. Its easier said then done. I kno many other bands will agree. What people in smaller bands (ya like myself) need to relize is that its a huge personal commitment that you have to give. First you need the passion, you need the drive, you need to think of it as a dream that no one or thing can stop you from reaching. Remember back when you were a little kid and your teachers would tell you that you can do anything you want in life, if you put your mind to it. and thats exactly what it is.
Taking your music seriously is a desion that takes years to make. Because the entire world will be against you making it, at least it feels like it. You have to have faith and confindence in your band and mostly in yourself. Your friends and family will most likly be there to support you and have faith in you, but in there hearts they may not belive fully in you.
Unless you have some rich parents that are willing to spend thousands of dollars on your music, pretty much expect that you will have to work your ass off to raise money for things you need. Most up and coming bands are balencing school, work, and there music. And that is not the easyest thing in the world to do, in most cases that is the reason people quit. And if you think you can book a tour and not have the money to support yourself...you will not have a good time.
Money can make or break a band from succeding at there goals. That is the worst part of being in a band, knowing you have the music and the passion, but not having the right amount of $ to do it. so what can you do? drop out of school and work full time to raise enough dough? not recommended, but if thats what you have to do...then fucking do it. your parents will be pissed, your friends will think your stupid, but just let that be another reason to give your music your all.
ive been in a band for 5 years now, and i have never felt the drive and passion then i do right now. my band may be 'small time' but to me it will always be a work in progress. and we will stop at nothing to enjoy our lifes to the fullest. even if that means being piss broke for a year or 2.
if you actually read what i wrote, hope your not to synical about it, just wanted to give my worthless advise and hope it serves interesting to other people.

Tom Da Bomb is right. Having been in a band myself, the money is always a killer. And no matter HOW much you love to play, at some point, it hits you: I go to Georgetown, get a degree, go to law school, or I risk the rest of my life in virtual poverty. As much as I love music and the band, it's gotta take a back seat to the rest of my life. And it's sad that money forces a lot of bands to make the same decision.
