Cubs reach deal for Marlins' Pierre
DALLAS -- The Chicago Cubs are expected to land their leadoff man Wednesday, according to a high-ranking baseball official.
The Cubs, who lost in the bidding for free agent Rafael Furcal, reached agreement with the Florida Marlins late Tuesday on a trade that would reportedly net Chicago center fielder Juan Pierre in exchange for a package that includes right-hander Sergio Mitre and Double-A pitching prospects Ricky Nolasco and Renyel Pinto.
The Texas Rangers were also in the final mix for Pierre, who batted .276 in 162 games with the Marlins in 2005.
Earlier Tuesday, Cubs GM Jim Hendry wouldn't confirm that the Cubs were after Pierre, but did confirm that he met with the Marlins, who continue to unload players at a rapid-fire pace.
"If we're fortunate that they will cooperate, we'll be happy," Hendry said.
And since the Marlins did, the Cubs should be, as Chicago's leadoff spot was a problem in 2005. The team tried eight different players there, and they batted a collective .245.
In other news Tuesday, Hendry dismissed a rumor in which the Cubs were sending Mark Prior to Philadelphia for outfielder Bobby Abreu. Carlos Zambrano also is not on the trading block.
"Carlos Zambrano and Mark Prior are not going to be traded by the Chicago Cubs," Hendry said.
Finding a leadoff hitter has been one of Hendry's top priorities since losing out in the Furcal sweepstakes. The shortstop decided to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and has agreed in principle to a three-year, $39.5 million deal.
Sources close to the negotiations said the Cubs dangled three options, including a five-year, $47.5 million offer.

there's no way in hell we're getting damon. We'll probably end up with fucking bubba crosby in centerfield. i dont mind him off the bench, but no way as a starting CF.
this sucks, if the sox had just given up on damon, we could have got pierre for nothing.

Defensively he sucks but so does all the other free agent centerfielders. Offensively he is great. I mean we hated Clemens before he came in and then we embraced him, why can't we embrace damon?

Steinbrenner wouldn't let a cave man on the team

he's great at defense, but he throws like an 8 year old girl with a broken arm.
but i think yankee fans are used to that comparison in center field.

i consider his arm part of his defense. and i mean...the guy HOPS WHEN HE THROWS!! Just bad. But you can't even begin to deny his offense. I'm almost positiv if the yankees give him maybe 4 years for 48 million he would find himself a barber.
he wants 7 years cause he doesn't have a brain

Boras wants 7 years. In a week or two when no one is budging their years will go down to 4 or 5

crosby has speed and an arm. something williams didnt have anymore. crosby can hit it if you let him play. he was playing really well at the end of the yr last year and had some hits in the series vs the angels. if i were the yanks i wouldnt pay a shit load of money for a cf because you would prob have to give up someone like cano. id say keep crosby and let him develop more.
and i dont want damon since he is a sox guy. clemens was ok because the sox yankees rivalry didnt really heat up until way after roger left.

we also hated roger because he threw at I think jeter but may be wrong there.
I don't think we NEED a CF. I think that if you can't win with Crosby hitting 9th and with our lineup, than that's just bad. Would I be happier with a true lead off guy? Yes. I don't like derek hitting 1st. But I can deal with Crosby, but I'm not sure if they yankees will stand completely idle this offseason.

yankees dont need much. they need a healthy rotation. they didnt have that last yr. they need wang to be good, they need to keep small who pitched great, they need to pick up a good starting pitcher who isnt 40 or in the late 30s.
i think the yankees need more than you're leading on. they need obvious bullpen help and their starting pitching was pretty abysmal last year, just because you have a bunch of names doesn't mean they're gonna pitch well. also, as long as alex rodriguez is on your team, you're not winning a world series.

They need bullpen help which is why they picked up Farnsworth. They have some young guys who could become solid bullpen guys. Starting Rotation wise you just don't know to be honest. They could be incredible, or they could be hurt again and be fucked.
I guess your a sox fan. The one thing everyone is forgetting is that the Yankees unarguably have the best Coaching Staff in the league. These guys will be able to teach A-Rod somethings he still may not have figured out. He will be working even harder, and he has gotten better after one year, and now after his second year who knows? These coaches will really just show A-Rod somethings and maybe they will calm his ass down.

Caleb, now the cubs are going to give your little cardinals a run for their money. A healthy rotation, with their revamped bullpen, and there is more than a good chance they will have mench and soriano by the end of the month. We're nipping at your ass buddy.

REgardless, they fucking dominated the second half of the year. Even without consistant pitching. ARod is in no way something that will stop the yanks from winning a series.
