Seeking: Summer merch job with a cool band
Experience: eh, a little, but I learn fast

Allo! I'm looking for a job merch girling for some local shows over the summer. I'm just sick of the wellesley scene and my parents want me to get a job...so merch girl would be the perfect position....two birds, one stone ya know?

I'm easy to talk to, pretty chill very organized. I like meeting new people, and love music! I'd prefer a paying job, but that isn't a requirement.

I'd be most interested in indie/alternative/electronica/"emo" bands, but anything cool would be okay.

I can commute to Boston, and pretty much anywhere around MA... Touring out of state is a possibility, providing you're not a creeper 50 year old living in your Moms basement....

I'm pretty much open to anything...I just want out of prepville...

No one is going to "hire" you over a message board. Find a friends band and see if they'll let you help them out.

Your 15, get a real first job.

im not trying to be mean but your 15? Band's have "hired" you? most merch people dont get paid, they arent 15, and they usually can lift quite a few pounds. tubs get heavy. you cant drive and cant get into alot of venues. im not trying to be rude or mean but i've been teching and touring for 6 years and it doesnt pay. its not luxurious and its not easy. and definetly not something a 15 year old should do. You should honestly find a "real" job or if you are serious about the music business then do it THE RIGHT WAY. ya know, by not posting on a messageboard. Go out, get in touch with labels, bands. work your way up. EVERY band need someone to help them for free! Go do it! Not trying to be mean in any way but seriously 15? if your parents would let your tour with a bunch of middle age dudes, then you might have even more problems. do it right, and do it fr the right reason, support your scene. comunnity and build the popularity of your friends!

lol yeah seriously, get a real job. go find a job at like a tanning salon, or at the mall, or an ice cream shop or something. doing merch, you usually won't get paid. if anything, the band might slip you like 10 dollars. not kidding. also, doing merch for one of your friends shitty local bands that never has played more than an hour out of the city doesn't count as being "hired". no offense.

its not worth it. you get blamed if the merch money comes up short or the counts are wrong. do you really want to live in a van for months with a bunch of sweaty dudes who will probably try to hook up with you? seriously, you're 15. and you'd probably actually lose money by touring with a band, seeing as you wouldnt be making any, i mean i guess you could starve yourself, but how are you going to get money for food or anything else?

and also, even if you were legit for this, how would you be a merch girl if you put leaving the state as a "possibility". do you understand what the concept of "touring" is?

i think the lack of maturity in your response kind of shows you arent ready for this. and believe it or not. some people dont spend 2 hours typing a sentence. i wanted to give you legit advice. but in the end you are 15. and umm... boys rule, girls drool? yes!

i was expecting this to be a band looking for a merch girl, not the other way around...

i'd say find a friend's band (or multiple bands)/ to help out. probably not much pay, but maybe you'll get some money or free merch out of it.

kinda, i didn't start teching until about 18 or 19. It's a big job that requires the kind of expierence that most 15 year olds (including myself at the time) dont have. i started touring as soon as i started playing music. i also dropped out of school (not a good idea). so i had no responsibilities. i started young but i was in the scene working, paying my dues. I promoted/booked shows then started to play, made alot of friends and connections then started with with merch and teching. i didn't get into alot of the more trustworthy stuff until i was around 18ish. merch people have to deal with alot of shit. It takes alot of patience. but at the same time you have to be quick with everything. there's no time to learn and adjust to things. you either do it right or you'll be gone. Every one is always cool but if you fuck with someones money, there going to get someone who can do it right.

Bitchslapmusic, with the way you are talking to and treating people (such as Element101), you should not expect to get ANY job. Whether it be a "summer merch girl position", or a toilet cleaner at Target. Treat people with respect next time you wanna be a "merch girl" (which realistically, only small local bands would 'hire' you). My advice is just to become a prostitute... thats easy money ;-)

Hey guys, I am looking for a merch gig also. I won't keep count of shirts. I will probably give them at a discounted price to people that are cool or charge extra for people who aren't. Most likely will trade shirts with other bands for my own personal use. Probably give free shirts to hot girls. I'll drink all your beer backstage, and possibly the other bands. I'll take many smoke breaks so if you play in venues where smoking is allowed, that'd be ideal. If its a local show i'll want to go home early so someone will have to pack it up, or if I met a girl I want to bring back to the van while you guys are on stage.. I don't load/unload trailers. Also, I will need you guys to work around my schedule. I don't really like to go out during the week because I wake up early for work, so no weeknight shows.

We can negotiate a per diem when the time is right.

I do have experience touring and I have a shitload of funny stories, so you won't ever get bored with me.

get in touch with local bands first off, and some local labels... if you parents DO let you tour, i highly discourage it...

okay, i am usually not one to get involved in these posts unless it's actually something worth talking about. Not only have the majority of the people on here pointed out how truly immature you made yourself sound, but there is one thing you REALLY need to think about. In this post, you are talking about "receiving chemo in the summer of '09" and then in another post you say that you are autistic. I may be COMPLETELY wrong, but the chances of you being FIFTEEN years old with AUTISM and CANCER are slim. For that matter, if you do in fact have both of these unfortunate conditions, why are you, at FIFTEEN years old TELLING PEOPLE ABOUT IT ON A PUBLIC WEBSITE? From my perspective, you are doing nothing but trying to get attention. I am REALLY sorry to break it to you sweetheart, but the chances of you GUILT-TRIPPING someone to "hire you as their merch girl" are slim to none. In another one of your posts, you also say you made THREE accounts because you keep getting bullied? Why make more accounts? Clearly you are saying things that are upsetting people, and if what people are saying to you over the internet is affecting you that much, then quit making accounts? It seems logical to me.

Like I said, in the off-chance that you do have both of these conditions, then I apologize for this. BUT I highly doubt that you are telling the truth. The fact that you would lie about these two things is disgusting to me. It's sad that you are actually ignorant enough to lie about something that is completely uncontrollable to the people who actually experience it. I am guessing that you are a perfectly healthy teenage girl. Stop being ignorant. The people who are autistic and who are going through chemotherapy would give ANYTHING to be healthy like you.

On that note, if you truly are in that serious state of health, there is absolutely no reason as to why you need to be touring anyways :)

you seem like a bitch scene chick, a very young one at that. seriously what you see on TV or in magazines is not what you should be modeling your life and personality after. It is not healthy. Get going by making friends with kids at your school or in surrounding areas, that are also into music - which should be pretty easy, seeing as you already know so much about the music Biz. And, also stop looking for attention on internet forums. It's a waste of time, go outside.

I agree with him...if your parents will honestly let you go on tour with a bunch of guys when you're 15, they must not like you very much at all.

I think it would be a cool job too, but I know what also comes with the job. You might think that the merch guys for your favorite bands are living an awesome life, but they're really not. Sure, they're touring with their best friends and meeting people in different cities. But they're getting little to no money, and what happens if that band ever stops touring? That's their "job" so what is going to happen when they're middle aged and realize that they don't have a college education, and the only place they can find a real job is at the local fast food restaurant? You have to think of these things before seriously doing them. Also take into consideration that the merch guys that you see with your favorite bands are around the same age as the band members. You're 15. I'm pretty sure there aren't many 15-year old bands touring right now.

I'm not trying to be mean, I just really don't think you should or could do this at this time.
