View Full Version : Mae Spring 2009 Headlining Tour - (m)orning

Hello fellow APers! I don't post here much, however I felt the need to share with you guys the wonderful concert I experienced on Friday April 17th. This day marked the start of Mae's spring headlining tour with Person L, Barcelona, and Tokyo. The concert took place at The Dixon Center in Cabrini College (Radnor, PA.)
This specific show, as Dave jokingly said, was a "warm-up training day" for the 6 weeks ahead of them. There was no Barcelona, or Tokyo playing. It was just Person L and Mae. There was no multi-sensory extravaganza either. Regardless of that. The show was, simply put: amazing. I'll let the setlist speak for itself. They must have played a good hour and a half. I'm probably missing one or two, so my apologies. And I don't quite have the order down either.
Embers and Envelopes (New version)
The House that Fire Built
Summertime
Someone Else's Arms
Suspension
Painless
The Ocean
Anything
Breakdown
The Everglow
Crazy 8s (Demo)
Just Let Go
Boomerang
A Melody, A Memory
Night/Day
Skyline Drive
There, I believe that's it... I'm sure you all can see the amount of Everglow on that =) but the setlist wasn't the best thing about the show. It was the energy given off by it's members. Dave, Zach, and Jacob were truly into what they were doing, and it showed on stage. They talked with the crowd between songs as well, and cracked plenty of jokes. They seemed "renewed" from when I last saw them.
Dave also said (sorry to ruin the possible good news!) that 19,000$ dollars worth of lumber was ACCIDENTALLY shipped to the Rhonda house they are raising money for... and instead of taking it back, the company donated it all! They also said they only need to raise 9,000$ more ontop of the 30,000$ already made, and then they're done. So congrats to them on that.
At the show the new EP, (m)orning, was there in it's entirety in a special dvd-style case which they said will ONLY be sold at shows (this version). It includes ALL the songs (even the ones yet to be released.) Let me tell you guys, there are still some more treats to come. I also got to meet Dave and Zach (really really chill guys) after the show; they both signed the EP for me.
I urge you all to go see Mae, as well as Person L (they tore it up) and the other acts, if you can. It's a show you wont want to miss. This show didn't have the 3D experience, OR the acoustic sessions afterwards, and I'm sure it can only get that much better with those things. I know I will be seeing them again on May 27th at the North Star Bar in Philadelphia. Pick up the special edition EP, stay after the show for the acoustic sessions, and have an amazing time. You wont regret it.

The set list sounds awesome! I am definitely going to go to the Philly date now. I am not a big fan of Person L but I love Mae and have enjoyed the few Barcelona songs I have heard. I am also eager to hear the new songs I have been meaning to do so but just keep forgetting. I will check them out when I get the EP at the show.

I hope I get tuesday off next week. I really want to see Person L again. I saw them last year with the Good Old War and Anthony Green. I think the Austin crowd enjoyed them a little more than the GOW. But yeah Person L was fucking awesome the closing song with the drum party did it for me. The extended jams are good.

If that Mae setlist is anything close tomorrow night to what is posted in this thread, that would rock my world.
I'd also LOVE to see Mae bust out Ready and Waiting To Fall. Dave, if you're reading this, dooooo it man!!

I aksed Dave about maybe doing this later in the tour. He said Mae wants him to do it, but they haven't had time to discuss it yet. He also mentioned something about re-recording The Fisherman's song with someone else doing vocals (he mentioned he'd love to have Aaron Marsh or Kenny Vasoli do them). So we'll see.
Anyway, tonight was a KILLER show. I'll be posting a setlist/review shortly.

I'm hoping that Rob and Mark return for a song or two at the Norfolk show just for the home crowd. That would be so amazing.

The band has a video projector and a giant white sheet they hang up. Different graphics and what-not are shown to sync up with the music, and some of these videos are in 3D.

Embers And Envelopes (new version)
Suspension
The House That Fire Built
Someone Else's Arms
Painless
Crazy 8's (the new version from (m)orning )
Just Let Go
The Ocean
Anything
Breakdown
Summertime
Boomerang
The Everglow
A Melody, A Memory
and our acoustic set was:
Waiting
Sun
Soundtrack to Our Movie
Ready and Waiting to Fall
Tisbury Lane
There was also some dueling guitars at the end of it. Dave and Zach also hung around for quite a while just to talk to the people.
Also, no one else really said this but the acoustic show is a for-charity show that costs an extra five dollars to see. Ours was performed in the parking lot (on top of my car, in fact) outside the venue. It was really awesome and I totally recommend staying the extra hour or so to see it. Also, it's a completely request based show, so if you plan to say, know what songs you want to request! We could have gotten them to stay around a lot longer if we'd had more requests.

So did Dave not sound godawful like he usually does live?
i have heard this from multiple people, but the one time i saw them, he sounded good, because it was a one-off show in the middle of them recording Singularity.
i think him usually sounding bad live is attributed to his ability to not be able to save his voice on tour. i'm sure the first 2 or 3 shows sound decent, then he gets progressively worse.
that's my guess anyways.

i'm not exactly sure how far down on the list of tour dates the 30th's show was, but i thought dave sounded really good. better than i think he's sounded at any of the other shows where i've seen him. especially during the acoustic bit, his voice was spectacular.

Your acoustic set of 5 songs took an hour? We got All Deliberate Speed, Tisbury Lane, Soundtrack, and Mistakes We Knew We Were Making. They said that they had to cut it super short cause I guess they went over during their set, and the city had a strict curfew since it was a Wednesday. But at least we got those 4, the set was over in about 20 minutes I'd say, and it was still really awesome. Afterwards, of course the left over people got signings and pictures and stuff. It was really nice :)

Unfortunately missed Tokyo (which was just Robert Smith acoustic) and Person L (but its okay because I met Kenny in-between sets). Barcelona was dissapointing to me, they were a three piece band that should have been a 5 piece, as the guitarist was playing rythmn whill lead guitar and bass were sampled via Macbook. Other than that, they were okay but forgetabble, they sounded like Straylight Run cum a band playing a high school dance.
Mae was good, not as great as the other times I've seen them as Dave didn't seem really into the songs until midway into the set. They're really taking the "Multisensory Aesthetic Experience" thing to heart though, as a screen played visuals throughout the set, with the last two songs having visuals in 3D (you had to purchase these 3D glasses for a buck, they say Mae on them). Also, throughout the set, a notice came up saying "activate smell" at which point you were to scratch and sniff the back of your (M)orning EP if you purchased it. The new keyboardist and bassist seemed really into it which was good. Also, Dave got really pissed during Sun (acoustic), because people started applauding before the song was finished and he was unable to finish the song. All in all though, a good set.
Setlist:
Embers and Envelopes (New Version)
The House That Fire Built
Suspension
The Breakdown
Prologue/Someone Else's Arms
Painless
Crazy 8s (demo version which was released online. Dave said "this is the version we wrote and prefer rather than the version the label changed and forced onto the album)
The Ocean
Just Let Go
Summertime
Boomerang
Anything
A Melody, The Memory
---
Sun (acoustic)
Night/Day
Although my friends (who were driving) didn't want to say, Dave said that every night on this tour after their set, for a 5 dollar donation you could come back in for an acoustic request set. I've seen Mae acoustic before and let me tell you it is well worth it, and it's for a good cause also.

I think it's safe to say, since no one else has, that the setlist doesn't change. It has to go with the video, that's why it'll be the same. Another reason they acoustic set is a good idea, Dave said, so they can play all the requests. Well, a few.
My fiance and another friend weren't feeling Dave's voice either, but I dunno, I was just go glad to be there that I didn't even notice/care one way or another, so I don't really know.
ALSO, YES to the acoustic part being totally worth it. We all sat around like a foot and a half from the guys and just lounged while he sang. So worth $5.

I saw them on a one-off show in a very small club, and he sounded terrible. I figured that would've been the best atmosphere to see Mae, but it seemed like Dave wasn't even trying to sing well. I know what I've been saying about his live voice sounds harsh, but I just expected much better out of one of my favorite bands, and they really disappointed me. The drummer(Jacob, right?) was definitely the highlight of the night.

Yeah dave's voice was kind of off. What was the acoustic set they played? The time I saw them acoustic was amazing, it was at the Loserkids store in San Marcos, CA and they played for like an hour, and i'd probably say it was my favorite time ever seeing mae.

Person L setlist from Chain Reaction show was as follows:
The New Sensation (new song)
New Song. (didn't mention a title)
Storms.
The Positives (new song)
Goodness Gracious.
Wooden Soldiers.
Pretty short set since Barcelona was the main support for the west coast part of the tour. Still the new songs are SO SO great and I really cannot wait for this new record. I spoke to him before the show he said he's looking at an August release. Can't wait.

well, by the time they left it was just over an hour after the main set had ended. so i guess it was probably 35 or 40 minutes, but there were all sorts of distractions between songs because of where we were and there was lots of chatting. the songs themselves weren't even the best part of the acoustic set, in my opinion. but, yes, they did stay for an hour. i know because i checked my phone when we walked outside and it was 11:15 and we didn't get in my car until nearly 12:30. i have a (loose-ish) 1 am curfew so i was worried i wouldn't make it. but anyway, i may have over estimated on the exact length of the set itself. but, yes, it was still a ton of fun.

I went to the show yesterday night in SF and had a fantastic time. Mae and Person L were awesome. Barcelona really surprised me they were great live. The setlists for Mae and Person L were pretty much the same as the ones posted, but Person L also played Help Yourself.
I didn't go to the acoustic set because Mae's set ended a little before 1 AM and I really needed to go home.

Sun (acoustic)
Night/Day
Although my friends (who were driving) didn't want to say, Dave said that every night on this tour after their set, for a 5 dollar donation you could come back in for an acoustic request set. I've seen Mae acoustic before and let me tell you it is well worth it, and it's for a good cause also.
It was the same setlist for the Philly show last night. The Multisensory thing was pretty cool.
I really enjoyed Tokyo and bought their CD. Barcelona was pretty good as well. I am not a big fan of Person L but they alright.
Was there an acoustic set last night? If so, did anyone stay for it? It seemed like they were completely done, I definitely would have stayed if there was one. I was hoping for Skyline Drive as an encore but a really good show none the less.

Last night's show at The NorVa was AMAZING. Tokyo didn't play the Baltimore show so I only saw them last night, and I was extremely impressed. Barcelona blew me away, they ended up playing acoustic last night because their drummer had to fly home for this brother's graduation. Person L was absolutely phenominal both nights but last night Dave (Mae) came out and played drums on one of their new songs with them (can't think of the title, but the one with the insane drum/percussion part for anyone who went). And seeing Mae at the NorVa was something I've been waiting for and it was amazing. The crowd was awesome and you could tell they were stoked to be home.
