View Full Version : Guitar players I have a question
I've just learning how to play and my fingers are killing me. So, this time when I went to buy new strings I asked about possible finger tip covers-I'm a wimp ok-- and he told me about the strings that were covered in a rubber material- so I bought them and they're super hard to play with-- any suggestions or do I have to wait until they callous over.

ur fingers should toughen up after a while, i used to get callouses(sp?) but after a month or two of constant playing you probably wont get them

Your fingers always hurt in the beginning. Just play it a little less often, wait until they dont hurt anymore and then go back to playing. Eventually your fingers'll toughen up and everything'll be fine. Those rubber strings must sound like shit too, take 'em off.

hahaha
I remember when I did my first slide I cut my fingers open and the strings started absorbing the blood. It was pretty disgusting, I didn't stop though.

Don't worry if your fingers hurt, its perfectly natural once you start playing, its just your fingers getting used to playing, it used to happen to me all the time a few months ago, ive only just started playing myself

Weird, I never had this problem. My fingers only hurt because my strings are three months old and extremely dirty. I'm so lazy when it comes to putting on strings.

You should get planet waves tuning posts, man. They are really awesome.. they are locking, and they cut the string for you.. it's pretty crazy.

eh i play guitar and bass, electric guitars hurt as little as playing the bass, but acoustic guitars hurts your fingers on the hand you fret with because you have to press down so hard

rubber strings? he gave you elixers huh? yeah those are coated in some osrt of polymer. they actually last a long time and soung good for a long time. but they cost like $13 a pack.
play and play and play. play till your fingers bleed then keep playing. your fingers will never toughen up and you will just get more frustrated. its a guitarists rite of passage. if you are a beginning player serious about playing, play all the time, whenever you can.
also, i reccomend DR strings. they feel really great to me, and sound awesome. i swear by them. alot of kids dig ernie ball slinkys, but they have like NO lifespan.

does that polymer really make them hard to play?
because i was going to check some out instead of getting blue steels

Elixer strings will keep your fingers from hurting as much.
And they sound amazing.

While I enjoyed the above answer, just fight through it, your fingers will eventually get used to the feeling and it will become nothing.

so he sold you elixer strings? And they are hard to play with? I never had any problems with them. Don't use anything on your fingers, you just basically have to play until they bleed to get your callouses.

elixers are just like regular strings except their is a slight coat over them, it sounds a lot better but they are way expensive. the guy prolabably sold them to you because he figured you didnt know anything about the guitar and wanted to tak you fo your money

I'm mainly a bassist, and my fingers hurt like shit when i first started. They're calloused up too, I don't know what's up with yours.

Ummm, it sounds like they sold him flatwound strings, not elixirs.
p.s.
Go Elixir or go home. (They're the only strings worth playing.)
use regular metal strings in time your fingers will adapt to this new surface that you will be playing on i recomend rubbing fast fret string lubricant on the strings it will make it smoother for your fingers to play but it is supposed to be used for after you play so it cleans off the strings and gets rid of the acids and finger grime or dirt that rusts your strings.

same here. ive been playing a year and they still sometimes hurt after a while...but you get used to it, the main ordeal is like you just said, the dirtiness

wash your frets with a little bit of lemon oil every other time you change strings. it removes the dirtiness and keeps your frets slick.

You just should keep playing, my cousin played till his fingers bled.

Just keep playing. when you think your fingers are going to fall off, keep playing. Also, if you wipe down your strings with a cloth after ever time you play, the strings should last longer. You have to rub pretty hard to get the dirt off.

I have found that if you put flat wound strings on your guitar it will be much better on the fingers. The strings cost around double but I have some on one of my guitars that have been on there for several years and they still sound great. Many bass players have these strings because they don't make the buzz sound sliding from fret to fret. Check it out and you will love the difference!
my fingers hurt when i first started playing, but then my fingers developed calluses and now not only does it not hurt when i play guitar but i can barely feel anything with those fingers because of how thick the calluses are. don't worry, just stick to it. it gets better.

They feel better (or at least they're easier on your fingers), but flatwound strings really sound terrible.
