I'll be adding Christmas songs as our featured downloads (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?p=2178917#post217891 7) over the next few weeks (unless any labels/bands object). This week I've chosen my all time favorite Christmas cover, Jimmy Eat World's "Last Christmas" (in the highest quality I've ever found it in). If you have any requests, post them in the replies. I'll only post old Christmas songs that can't be found on CDs coming out this year, so keep that in mind. I have everything on our updated (below) Christmas song list. I also know there are a bunch of downloads up over here (http://radio.lagfx.net/1/); however, I highly recommend you download the Cartel song from AOL Music (http://music.aol.com/songs/downloads/mp3_main) because it really helps out the band.

This cover manages to be incredibly authentic while still having a JEW feel to it. Good stuff.

JEW's version of Last Christmas is phenominal. I actually enjoy any version, whether it be george michael, JEW or hawk nelson.

My favorite alternative christmas song is MxPx's "christmas day."

is this legal?

No, it certainly isn't. Unless this website has written consent from the label (and/or some cases the band).

It's very illegal.

But most bands don't care--exposure is awesome. But that doesn't give this website legal right to do it. It's still completely illegal.

Only illegal if you don't take it down when asked, we've said flat out we'll remove anything any label/band wants the second they contact us.

That's not correct.

I'll start with an over-the-top ridiculous real-world example, then I'll go into serious detail.

If you steal someone's car while they're not home, it's illegal, regardless if you promise (and do indeed fulfill this promise) to return the car the very instant that they need it. It's still illegal. Yes, that's ridiculous, but it's the same type of logic.

You don't own rights to distribute the songs. What you're doing is illegal. Bands/labels should not need to contact you--it shouldn't be done in the first place, in legal terms. You don't have permission to do this.

I mean, fuck, I don't care. I think this is awesome. And I think most bands should allow you to do this, free exposure. Plus, I always love finding new bands.. and this could serve as a means to do just that.

Doesn't mean it's legal, though.

That's a false analogy (don't use the word logic in your statement, if you completely ignore the actual rules of logic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logical_fallacy)). First, the song is not a car. Second, the song is not found on any of the bands CDs. Third, by listening/downloading the song, you are not depriving the owner of their property or of any finances. By stealing a car, you remove the ability for the owner to have that possession, by downloading a song not found anywhere else, you do no such thing. This is a version of the song that does not exist on CDs. If the band or label objects, it can easily be removed. However, so far, no complaints.

If you sign your name, at least maybe make it your name? We know who it's from your username is at the top of your post.

Alright, the car thing was a bad call. I carelessly put that in there. Sorry.

When a band/label licenses a a song for a compilation (in this case, the Jimmy Eat World song for Kevin And Bean), it doesn't automatically allow you to post it. Your argument that follows about it not being on the band's CDs is irrelevant--the band got paid (or some other contract was made) to record the song, and to allow the compilation to use the song. You're hurting, if anyone, the label who put out the compilation.

I'm not trying to be a dick, especially to you since I fucking love this site, and I'm trying to say everything here with as much respect as possible.

But I just needed to point out, which you don't agree with me on, that what you are doing is illegal. If a band does complain, then you can't remove the song from all the people's hard drives that downloaded it--and even if you could, it wouldn't change what you're doing.

I don't know, no one else is supporting me here (either they don't care, or they think I'm wrong, too). I cannot see how you see this as being legal. You are freely distributing a music file that you do not own the rights for.

yeah im all for sharing music such as this thats rare and hard to find

but I have to agree with you on this one....for once. I just find it hard to believe that someone can just put a song up without any kind of consent for people to take at their leisure and it be legal. The Thrice song being an exception because I know they sent Jason the good quality version of (which I still havent got yet) most likely knowing his intentions. Not sure if he's going to post that though

i love it! Every year (for past 2-3) and this one I have made a christmas cover cd. This year I got two I am making. One is more traditional and can be played for all ages as it is made to express a love for Christmas. The other is more liberal in thought of the christmas spirit. Not everyone likes christmas. Here is my tracklisting for the 1st. If ya'all like, and it is allowed, I can link it for whomever. just email/pm/or leave a reply.

1. Acceptance - So This is Christmas
2. Matchbook Romance - I'll Be Home For Christmas
3. Self Against City - Alone on Christmas
4. Home Grown - Feliz Navidad
5. Hawk Nelson - Last Christmas
6. Copeland - Do You Hear What I Hear
7. The Apprentice - Rejoice
8. Mae - Carol of the Bells
9. The Track Record - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
10. Jacks Mannequin - Lights and Buzz
11. In Memory - The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
12. Gatsbys American Dream - Christmastime is Here
13. Cartel - Rocking Around This Christmas Tree
14. Dashboard Confessional - The Only Gift That I Need
15. Hello Goodbye - Winter Wonderland
16. Relient K - I Celebrate the Day
17. The Beautiful Mistake - A Cradle In Bethlehem
18. Spoken - Mary Did You Know
19. Number One Fan - Christmas Time is Here
