Vegan vs. Peta (Round 1)

This goes out to vegans and vegetarians, as well as our carnivorous brothers and sisters.

I am an anti-peta vegan. I think they have amazing resources and I do also share many of the same views as them. However, I strongly disagree with the "in-your-face" explicit and aggressive nature that they are so known for. I feel like they have done nothing but alienate vegans and vegetarians, and because of this, the general public dismisses any of the points that we are trying to make, and look at us like crazy militants.

I am curious as to your views about this, whether you agree or disagree with me, and why.

However, those involved with PETA actually could be considered activists because they are technically not just choosing to not eat meat, they are advocating fair treatment for animals and also being environmentally-friendly

Anemia can suck but I dont really notice it (other than the random ice chewing) my cousin has sickle cell though and thats worse.

Animals =/= People. That being said, they should be treated kindly as possible, but it's okay to eat them. It's natural and meat is a good source of protein. Also, PETA is fucking crazy.

All of my friends and family (the ones that live here) hunt, I grew up on those animals. Peta gave us all a bad name, and those weird "your dad's a murder because he fishes" comics they give out to kids are horrible.

I don't support them because of their militant techniques. If they took a less brutal approach to what they are doing then I might change my opinions. Shoving posters of beheaded cattle into the faces of concert-goers and people on the street has the same negative effect as the pro-life extremists who used to assemble outside of my dorms on campus with pictures of aborted fetuses. It is infuriating. That wasn't the first thing I wanted to see when I woke up, and I'm sure concert-goers and people on their way home from work don't want to see what the Peta people shove in their faces.

If Peta was more conversational with people, and made them feel less like criminals, then maybe they would be more apt to open their minds up a bit. But until then, they will further alienate vegans/vegetarians from the rest of society.

Also, there's more to the meat packing industry than just animal cruelty. There's water pollution, fossil fuel consumption, deforestation, added chemicals/hormones, etc, greenhouse emissions. Maybe they should try to connect more with people about issues that directly affect them.

I'm a vegetarian and I disagree with the way PETA does things, especially since it does greatly overshadow the actual good of what they're trying to advocate. For example the smear campaign against the Olsens. What a completely useless expenditure of hate, time, and money.

well I'd like to see the people who actually went vegan/veg because of the works of peta. I didn't go veg because of Peta, I have my own motifs, some of which are also peta's motifs. But I would never spill red paint over a fur jacket just to make people aware of the fact that animals died for it. They aren't going to stop people wearing it, and by ruining it the person is just going to buy a new fur jacket...totally stupid.

So I'm on the one with you, they should actually do something good, not destructive for humanity.

my veins look huge and blue, so whenever I get blood drawn doctors think they've hit the jackpot, but then they cant get to them because theyre really tiny. Although once an intern drew my blood and he hit the vein wrong and blood gushed all over the place.

Completely agree with the ideas in this thread. Both would be better. But I would prioritise humans over animals. I don't know. I detest some of the things they do to animals, but the fact that humans across the world don't even have clean water is far more important to me.
