The Summer Set - ...In Color
Record Label: The Militia Group
Release Date: September 30, 2008
Who?
A pop rock band from Scottsdale, Arizona with their debut EP for The Militia Group.
How is it?
...In Color is a fairly intriguing release that ultimately falls flat due to The Summer Set's inability to break free from the current trends. Though...In Color isn't completely oversaturated with auto-tuned vocals, they are used just enough to detract from the overall enjoyment of this release. Take the opener "Cross Your Fingers" for example. Twice, just as the chorus begins, the auto-tune vocals kick in to coincide with some overly cliche and terribly unnecessary dance beats. "She's Got the Rhythm" is another example where auto-tune abuse is rampant, which again, takes away from the song itself. Though the presence isn't nearly as strong with the rest of ...In Color, there are still auto-tuned vocals to be found. As expected, the lyrics aren't anything to write home about. "Cross Your Fingers" showcases the best lyrics of this release, though it certainly isn't breaking any new ground.
It's not that ...In Color is terrible by any means. Personally, I continually find myself singing along to the songs. That said, catchy songs can only take a band so far. After a while, you'll want more substance from this band, and that's something that ...In Color fails to deliver. All of the electronic tricks employed by The Summer Set will only hinder them, not help them. Not to mention, it becomes extremely frustrating when a band that clearly possesses talent falls victim to the same old cliches. Unless the band makes some serious changes next time around, they will be yet another band few will remember in a year or so, once this neon craze has died down.
Artist Vs Poet; The Morning Of; The Scenic; Mercy Mercedes
