Other. Emo means a number of different things. Some of what I listen to could be called emo depending on your definition of the word.

I love the actual style, but I hate the way the word is used now.

other. Most people don't know what actual emo music is and get it confused with awful shit like Senses Fail or Hawthorne Heights. Its the same thing with screamo where people call Silverstein or Thursday screamo when they aren't. Basically its about people not knowing their genres and lumping bands where they don't belong. The word has lost its meaning once and its now seen in a negative light because of scene kids and the fucking media.

Real emo music is good, but every other definition (style of clothing, cutting and homosexuality etc) is ridiculous.

People still say emo?

Anytime some says. Hey aren't they an emo band? I just reply. No. Honestly 99% of the population has no idea what the hell they mean when they call something emo. Since when did we define what genre of music a group plays by they clothes they wear and if they have eyeliner on?

I don't think he asked what you think of emo in pop culture, just the actual music. I agree it is very hard to figure out what is emo and I am getting sick of people bringing it up. I am sure there is something in the 300 different bands I have in my itunes that is emo, so I will just say I like it.

Correctamondo. I'd actually tick an 'emo music doesnt exist' box if there was one. For me I've never heard a single 'emo' band that you couldnt describe as a genre, so why have the genre? Its like an insult now which is stupid. I'm actually one for calling bands such as Hawthorne Heights and Silverstein, even going as far as bands i actually like; TBS, MCR, Bayside and Brand New a completely new genre. They're not the same emo as before but constantly labeled so, and you can't say its evolved as a genre because it wayy tooo different. Its not really punk rock either. I'm not sure what I'd call this genre though, but people have come up wth names before right?

Emo started in the hardcore scene in D.C. in the 80's, but it has evolved into a number of different things. Most bands that people call "emo" today, I wouldn't consider emo, but its probably where they draw their influence from.

I'm glad people voted for it. "Emo" has such a negative connotation these days, I assumed everyone would say it's shit.

I love many of the bands that are encompassed in this scene, whether its "original emo", "second wave emo," "third wave emo", "screamo", post hardcore, deathcore, emo rap, whatever it may be.

The best artists in the scene of yesterday and even today - I love those bands and am not ashamed to admit it. I don't like some of the most derivative bands and the ones who don't get what the scene is about (ie Brokencyde, ISMFOF, etc.) and just scream because it's 'cool.' Same thing with neon synth bands like MetroStation - they don't represent my idea of emo music.

And YES! Algernon Cadwallader is DAF (dope as fuck). I want to make a trip out to Philly sometime this summer to catch a show.

Well said sir. I'd like to hope that Algernon Cadwallader actually does a tour, but I just heard of them through word of mouth so who knows if and when they will come closer than Philly.

As for the Used, it was a pretty kick ass show. The band sounded good, Bert was his crazy self, and they played a solid set list. I got to say hi to Bert before the show, he was a chill dude. I'm kinda sad that Bert isn't really screaming so much anymore. But then, he had throat surgery so I imagine they are trying to avoid aggravating the condition. When he did let it rip it was still the same awesomeness.

Also, enjoyed the new song, and noticed a cool breakdown at the end, if there are some more songs like Blood on your Hands I might dig the new stuff.

Your take?

Yeah, it was a good show. I was disappointed Bert wasn't screaming, too. But I was. It hurt my throat. As far as the newer stuff goes, I'm not sure I like the direction they're going, but they're still a good band.
Did you happen to catch The Wonder Years? They were awesome but all the high school scene kids looked confused.

If you're around Kent this summer and you happen to hear Algernon blasting from a car, it's totally me. Great summer music.

once you grow up a little you stop caring about all this shit and just listen to the type of music you like and forget about the politics behind it. its kinda nice.
