New live action movie set to focus on the origins of the turtles.
So happy they decided to go back to live action for the franchise (even though i was a fan of the last movie), I just hope they get the right people on board to make this thing.

So this is a reboot? Shame. Wonder if they'll borrow more from the comic or from the cartoon. I was always a little disappointed that some old school cartoon elements never made it into the cartoon reboot, like Bebop, Rocksteady, or Krang. Man, I grew up on that shit. I know it was supposed to be closer to the comic, but really, cartoon vs. comic, I choose cartoon. Call me crazy if you will.
i choose cartoon also, that shit was amazing.

It ain't exactly 'live action'. The discussion going on now is to use CGI for the turtles, mixed with live actors and settings for everything else. Its going to look like shit probably, remember how bad this mix looked in I Am Legend...? And that was on a huge budget.

well, that's disappointing, but it doesn't necessarily mean it will look like shit. there are plenty of movies out there that use cgi/live action mix and look great. saying it will turn out like I Am Legend isn't exactly fair.

Few films have pulled it off and not looked like comical shit. The turtles are the main character and will be the key figures in almost every scene. I'm not sure how they could pull that off and it not turn out looking like crap. The original movies are 20 years old and they still look good, just think of all the improvements that have been made in puppeteering and prosthetics since then and how good this could be if they didn't wimp out and assume computers are always the 'answer'? It would be cheaper to, but hollywood is too stupid to understand that.
*disclamer, I hate CGI.

*disclamer, I hate CGI.well the variety article (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118002745.html?categoryid=13&cs=1) says nothing about the turtles being CG, instead it says that they were going to use "face replacement technology". So it sounds like there will be actors in suits, just the faces will be CG, sort of like Where the Wild Things Are, which is cool in my book.

I heard it's going to lean more toward the comic books and have more of a dark side in light of the new Batman reboot.
I also heard they're bringing back the Shredder. I don't know how true this is.

Michael Bay says 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' are aliens, reinvents origin story (http://popwatch.ew.com/2012/03/19/michael-bay-teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-aliens/)
“When you see this movie, kids are going to believe one day these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie,” said Bay as he took the stage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEpPSNM73qw) to discuss his new vision for the reptilian reboot. “These turtles are from an alien race, and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely loveable.”

I will be so pissed if he fucks this up. Why are Eastman and Laird (the creators) not stepping in to stop this? They've usually been hands on with all adaptations of the property.
Edit: Just realized the right were sold to Nickelodeon/Paramount. Bloody shell.
Why the hell does this need to be rebooted again? I am sick of the same recycled ideas.

It also had a lower budget than the second. Those coupla million could've gone a long way! A lot of that third sequel is misguided. The second one still looks rather slick for an early 90's blockbuster but it is also quite a bad film. Funny because it was my favorite one as a kid, but now it doesn't even hold a candle to the first one.

It was also an animated film without a major animated studio push that was released in March of all months against five other films on the same day. This will most likely be market as an event picture (the last one wasn't) and Christmas and Summer are the two prime spots for those sort of films. I think it'll do a lot better than that one will, especially with a man like Michael Bay producing it. Whether that's good or bad remains to be seen.

The first two were handled by Henson Studios, who did not work on the third one. That's why there's a clear discrepancy in quality... haha
Update though from Michael Bay himself:
"Fans need to take a breath, and chill. They have not read the script. Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles to help expand and give a more complex back story. Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world."

I don't know. Granted, I'm just speculating, but Platinum Dunes has yet to release an 'event' picture. Even their biggest remake "Nightmare on Elm Street," was released during the film dump months. Sure, but hitherto they've only released horror films. This is the exact opposite of that. Platinum Dunes has yet to release an unsuccessful film. They're batting one thousand. They've developed a very good relationship with a huge studio and paved the way to allow themselves to make an event picture of this sort. I think it's a very calculated effort and one that will pay off for them (though ultimately not fans) in the long run. I think it's already easy money whether they are aliens or not.

As much as I hate to admit it, you're right. They're great businessmen because they're able to repackage and remake everything into crap then sell it to the slack-jawed masses. This holds absolutely no promise whatsoever, as you hinted. Producers that have yet to produce a quality film, director that can't direct and changing the story that changes everything. There is no reason anyone should pay for this.

I didn't say "they have yet to make anything bad", I said "they have yet to make anything unsuccessful." All of those films beside The Hitcher and TCM: The Beginning did huge numbers at the box office, and even in the cases of those two, neither were failures.

Agree for the most part, though I don't think they are ALL bad. TCM was a bad remake, sure, but because of that remake we received a horror villain in R. Lee Ermey as Sherriff Hoyt that deserves to be remembered and deserved a BETTER film. Also, the Friday the 13th remake was everything a sequel should've been. There was no point in reinventing the franchise because they inadvertently proved that nothing was broken. If they cut off the unneeded prologue with Pamela Voorhees and turned it into a sequel that ignored both continuity and logic then it would've been awesome!
But in all other cases, I agree. There was no reason for that Nightmare remake. Freddy is too iconic to be recast and reformatted. It was devoid of everything that made the original great and stay relevant for decades after.

I sure don't, but I find it hard to keep defending him sometimes. I think the transformers films (especially the third one) are technical masterpieces even though they are narrative pieces of turd.
The man has a winning personality, though. I've never seen anyone with his sort of power in Hollywood flaunt it so casually and openly shit on the heads of fans. I have to bow to him for his utter lack of humility.

Reaction from Peter Laird, co-creator of TMNT:
I have had several requests from TMNT fans during this past week to comment on the idea of the Turtles being "reimagined" as aliens for the upcoming TMNT movie to be produced by Michael Bay. A few people -- who don't seem to understand that I am no longer in control of the property -- want me to stop this, somehow. Obviously, I can't do that, even if I wanted to.
But I would actually encourage TMNT fans to swallow the "chill pill" Mr. Bay recently suggested they take, and wait and see what might come out of this seemingly ill-conceived plan. It's possible that with enough truly creative brainpower applied to this idea, it might actually work. I'm not saying it's probable, or even somewhat likely… but it IS possible.
However, as I have pondered this further, I have realized that in one way it IS truly a genius notion. Let me explain…
Over the years, I have made no secret of my distaste for what I consider to be the weak, facile, creatively bankrupt idea which can be summed up like this:
"If FOUR Ninja Turtles are good, then FIVE (or more) Ninja Turtles MUST be better!"
It was in large part this brain-dead notion that led to the creation of the execrable "Venus de Milo" character in the blessedly short-lived live action TV series "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation". And I can't tell you how many times we got mail in the early years of the Turtles from people who thought it was simply an amazing idea to do a "fifth Turtle", and how many times those same people suggested that this fifth Turtle be named "Picasso". And many times, the brilliant idea to explain this extra Turtle was that, instead of there being just four pet shop turtles in that glass bowl in the origin story, there were really FIVE.
Sigh.
I'll admit -- I have played with the idea of more Turtles myself, a few times. There was the character of "Kirby", the "fifth Turtle" that Kevin Eastman and I came up with for one of the several movie ideas which never came to fruition. And I created the "Super Turtles" in Volume 4 of the TMNT comics published by Mirage… and they eventually appeared in one episode of the 4Kids animated TMNT TV series.
But…
… in both those instances, I was careful to make these Turtles not just MORE of the same, i.e. just extra TMNT. In both of the above cases, the extra Turtles were from other dimensions… and the Super Turtles, especially, were VERY different from the Ninja Turtles. I don't remember all the details of the work we did on that "Kirby the Fifth Turtle" thing, but I DO remember being adamant that if we were going to agree to the idea of a "fifth Turtle", it would have to be something other than the harebrained "there was an extra Turtle in the bowl, etc." idea.
Is that too fine a line? Yeah, maybe… but to my way of thinking, anyway, it is a CLEAR line.
Anyway, to get back to the "TMNT are aliens" thing -- the reason I say it could be a "genius" idea is that -- for the first time -- someone has come up with a way to have as many freakin' Turtles as they want. I mean, if the TMNT are actually members of an alien race, there could be a whole PLANET of them! Joy. -- PL

What? In what world would Paul Thomas Anderson rebooting TMNT be at all awesome? He's a genius, but there is nothing positive he could bring to TMNT because his brow is raised much higher than TMNT needs to be lifted.

Reaction from Peter Laird, co-creator of TMNT:
Great read, he's one of my favorite writers. Best avatar too.

To be fair he said he was working with "one" of the creators, not both of them. The whole situation is bullshit however I feel this way only because it's bay and his movies seem to be created for the sole purpose of $. Then again its tmnt for Christ sake they have been absent of artistic merit forever and our childhood memories have just suppressed this fact. I mean what six year old didn't find the vanilla ice "go ninja go ninja go" rap as their equivalent to dr dre's the chronic. This reboot is meant for the new era of youth and I'm cool with that. The old movies are to outdated to grab the interest of today's elementary market, and whether it be aliens or mutants I don't think anyone should be deprived of a bunch of weapon wielding turtles take on shredder and co. Yeah it would be awesome to see Paul Thomas Anderson direct or produce a tmnt reboot but we all know with today's market more focused on effects
Basically. There's been plenty of rubbish associated with this franchise for a long time, and at the end of the day it's just a cartoon that I liked when I was a kid. One terrible film based on it wouldn't be much skin off my nose these days.

michael bay you fuck. You need to spill ooze on turtles, not have them take a space ship to earth. Ugh.

Alright... People probably can calm down. From Jonathan Liebesman:
“Look, it’s so funny—if everyone was such a die-hard fan, they would know that the TCRI canisters where the ooze comes from. That is alien ooze. Now I’m not saying what Michael said is exactly what the movie is, because we’re sitting in a room now figuring everything out. So we don’t know, but we are like Michael said: we’re expanding it, and the expansion will be true to the mythology. I promise you: fans will love it.”
“Whatever mythology we’re building on or expanding is coming from that guy, Kevin Eastman’s head, who created the Turtles in the first place. And so everything will tie in with the mythology; fans will be extremely excited with what we’re coming up with. A lot of it is stuff he’s wanted to do for a long time, but just hasn’t had the opportunity because now we have the budget and things on this film to expand it in the right way. And so, I’m happy that everyone is extremely passionate, and they will not be disappointed. It’s all coming from the best possible place for this franchise.”
I kinda figured Bay probably didn't know what he was talking about if they were truly working with Eastman or Laird. It's likely that Krang (or Utroms in some form) will be a part of the movies because they were the ones that created the ooze in the comics.

Correction: Two terrible movies. That third one sucked something fierce.

I think, at the end of the day, whether it sucks or not (which I've already stated my opinion), people need to look in the mirror and see that they're in the 20s and getting worked up over a cartoon from their childhood.

I mean one more terrible film to come, haha. With that said I'm sure there'll be sequels to this one, but I still don't think it'd be something worth shitting the bed over like people seem to be.

I think it's a pretty safe assumption to assume he will be the main villain if they are from fucking space. One positive thing, though I'm sure the characterization of him will be incredibly silly.

I'm very against this idea. I grew up on these movies and I feel like they're going to ruin it by changing the origins.

I mean, okay, the ooze had alien origins and thus because of the ooze the turtles have alien origins....but isn't that still different from saying that, hey, the Ninja Turtles hail from a planet full of Ninja Turtles?

I think it could be something along the lines of them being created on earth via the ooze per the standard origin, but, as they are raised, they aren't cognizant of the possibility that there could conceivably be a planet (or more) full of creatures like them. Then some kind of plot and interaction with Krang/Utroms (who are the creators of the ooze in the comics) reveals the true alien-based origin of the ooze that created them. Not that this is what I think they are doing, but it makes a lot of sense in terms of them trying to expand the TMNT universe beyond the average fan's belief that the standard story is always turtles vs. Shredder. By expanding the scope of the story, it leaves them open to the more obscure aspects of the TMNT universe. This is all purely conjecture on my part, but I wouldn't be shocked if Bay really just didn't know what he was talking about when he made that announcement.
Anyways, in an interview with Cinema Blend, Liebesman said they were approaching the Turtle effects in a similar way to Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Many might be turned off by the idea of CGI turtles, but I think it could be awesome. ROTPOTA was made on a $93 million budget (TMNT's is around $100 million), so I have no doubt they could make the effects look great.

This I would be satisfied with because this requires some practical form of coherency, haha. Let's hope the guy who directed Battle: Los Angeles and Michael Bay can follow suit. Hopefully the script's awesome.

Might Kid Cudi have a role? Despite all the shitty news about this project, this is the one that bums me out the most. Kid Cudi is an abhorrent human being. Cast Drake instead. As everybody.
Also, Kevin Eastman drew him this:

Donald Glover is apparently down to play one of the turtles after fans have clamored for him. I'd definitely be okay with him in one of the roles, though I think he would be better off as Donatello or Michelangelo, rather than Leonardo or Raphael. I'm just wondering if they'll actually have actors on-set playing them a la Serkis in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
