The Microphones
Mount Eerie
Uh, when Mount Eerie (the album) dropped, the blogosphere/indie critic consortium proclaimed The Microphones the greatest band of all time (among other hyperbolic statements).
Phil Elvrum is quite well-known and well-regarded by indie fans/critics. He's far from a neglected, obscure artist and hasn't gone overlooked.

i think latterman's pretty severely underrated when you talk about the pop punk bands from the earlier part of the decade. i hadn't even heard of them before last year.

I feel like the Sleeping is really underrated. they've been doing it for a while and have put out 3 solid albums, yet you never hear much about them and their last.fm play count is ridiculously low compared to a lot of bands who have put out one mediocre record, it's really a shame.

Not to mention that Funeral For A Friend might be the best band I have ever seen live... ever, they sounded identical to their cd, it was insanely good, that put them in my favorite bands category after that show, and that was ages ago it seems, they definitely deserve more props they don't get them, you're right.

Agreed with PTH, but neither Thrice or Brand New are underrated by any means. They both have quite the respect of people around here and otherwise.

No, if you think this band is any good than you are dead wrong. Opinions are only worthwhile if they are educated and if you think this band is any good than it's not an educated opinion. You need to change the way to which you judge a band or artists music because it shouldn't lead you to conclude a band like this is any good.

I have been listening to them for two years and don't know anybody that listens to them but they might be because I don't use myspace. I meant they are underrated on AP because every time I try to submit news about them its never gets posted. Even the review for them awhile back only got like 10 responses. I usually don't care for electronic pop stuff but I fucking love Owl city
Well I don't like them much, and they only post news they deem important.
But yeah, I can name ten people off the top of my head that I know personally that listen to them without a shred of other musical intelligence.
Klatzke
04/25/09, 10:03 PM
Well all of the news I have submitted has always been posted except for Owl City news. Another factor in what they post is how many people are familiar with that band. If nobody knows about a band of course they won't post it.
Eh. I still think that band is overrated if anything. Unless it's just trendy to like them near here (which I doubt, this place sucks).
And I realllllly agree on Foxy Shazam.

I feel like all of PTH's stuff is so interesting and varied within the songs themselves that they can write songs in similar styles and keep it original.
I can see that, and I can see some differences from their old stuff to the new stuff, but I still feel like you could have put the new stuff on the old cd and it would fit right in, maybe not exactly the same, but close enough to where their progression was minimal, and I would have just liked to see more of a change, not like they're bad by any means, just for a bit of a mix up, thats all. I love them, been one of my favorites since forever now, just saying.
Zolof the Rock n Roll Destroyer
Foxy Shazam
The Show is the Rainbow
You are so right about Foxy, but I don't know how popular or respected they can get, they have such a weird/unique sound that they just can't gain the amount of fans that some of the "prettier" singing bands have gotten. His vocals are crazy, and the band themselves are crazy, especially live. They are a blast, and crazier than most any band out there, but they just have too much of an experiemental crazy dance-core sound, I feel like they will always be way underrated.

Well speaking of vocals, they just got a new singer at the end of last year so maybe that will help a bit. TYBG are generic but, I believe they're one of the best at what they do. They really have a nice mix of songs and aren't terribly cliche. I mean it was my AOTY for last year.

I know they're not dance pop or whatever, they're just mediocre IMO. Just because it's so called "classic pop punk" doesn't make it good, contrary to what a lot of people on this site seem to think.

Forever Comes Too Soon may not be a future classic, I still think they're one of the better pop punk bands today.
I actually like the many different kinds of pop punk, and while TYGB definitely has some of classic/traditional pop punk's elements, I think they're more like the emo influenced kind of pop punk of bands like Saves The Day (Through Being Cool) and old Fall Out Boy. That said, the reason why a lot of people in AP thinks that classic pop punk is equal to good music is nostalgia more than the actual music itself.
I actually like EA a whole lot but TYGB are by far superior. I can't believe how anyone would think they're a dance-pop band at all.
Same here, EA is good, but they can't even come close to matching TYGB.
They're often associated with bands like FTSK and We The Kings because of the two reasons I gave in my earlier post.

I can see why their personalities could piss someone off. Sometimes I get aggrivated by the fact that they think they're going to be the next Blink 182. To me, Forver Comes Too Soon was what I really wished So Wrong It's Right was which is why I really enjoyed FCTS.
Here's another underrated one: THieves and Villains. Now before anyone says anything, this is what i think: Movement was highly dissapointing. The songs as a whole were mediocre at best and in parts, that record was just a bit too polished. That said, I was very impressed by the lyrics and even though there weren't many, it did have a couple standout tracks.

Same here, EA is good, but they can't even come close to matching TYGB.
They're often associated with bands like FTSK and We The Kings because of the two reasons I gave in my earlier post.
I completely agree with your point about AP's tastes being rooted in nostalgia.
I still don't think they're even slightly impressive though.

They were on tour with Foxy Shazam, I've never heard of them until I saw Foxy & Drmanhattan.
So I went home and looked them up, I could not believe they are so underrated, amazing.
Also, Forever In A Day, they were on tour with Cinematic Sunrise last year, but I think they're breaking up, too bad they're great.

I liked movement. I had a much different opinion than eveyone else on it. People calleditt watered down, I call it

I'd have to say Pierce the Veil. Sure, most of their fansbase is a following of 14 year old scene girls, its just something you have to look past. And sure, Vic's vocals do take a little to get used to at first. But once you get used to it and accept it, it all blends together perfectly. Like Fear Before's new record. The vocals are no where near amazing, but there is no other way to do it. Most people don't take their music very seriously, but instead their first impression would be, "Oh look...another generic pop band". Again, they have to look behind everything and take a good hard look at all the technicality and musicainship these guys put in their music. Wow, I went really far with this, but I think they deserve alot more recognition.

I'm not saying ISMFOF are musical geniuses. I'm not even saying they're good at their instruments. I'm saying people underrate them because of that single song without listening to anything else they put out.

Same goes with any Rise band with talent (Oceana, Dance Gavin Dance, Emarosa, In:Aviate). I feel the same way with Pierce the Veil as I do with Chiodos. This is going too far for you guys, I know. But theres something about the theatherical feel with Bone Palace Ballet that I love so much. I actually talked to Rob, Denny and the tour manager of Oceana and I suggested them to just drop off from Rise. They said that Craig, of Rise Records, does a lot for the band and all of the otherbands in the record label as well. That's how I got into him. I saw him open for Cursive a few years an was blown away be his energy. His setup was sweet with his art videos front and center. I really like he becauase he reminds me of Atom and His Package
Nice. I saw him with 12 Gauge Valentine and The Number 12 Looks Like You. Kinda a weird show for him to play, but it was great.

Yes really, you could see how one band has redefined the genre and how the other is influenced by bands that came out during the screamo explotion of a few years ago.

I think The Riverboat Gamblers are pretty underrated. Underneath the Owl and To The Confusion of Our Enemies were both really good, but I think they are both growers. RBG seem to have (IMO) a style that doesn't jump out at you even though the songs are very energetic, so they have to grow.
So if you don't listen a few times you may just forget about them. Hence, underrated.
No
No? I don't mean they're underrated in general, but they are underrated towards they're type of music. Like of course blessthefall isn't an underrated Pop Punk band, you know what I mean?

its personal choice isnt it, they are quite in your face with the vocals and that, even though i like them, i do think they are a hate love type thing

Decent at best singer. He was lucky that his bandmates at DGD and Emarosa aren't any better at their instruments. They make his vocals sound better.
Their EP Whatever I Say Is (forgot the rest of the title) was a decent release I have to admit. Their next two records made me feel violated.

They are, but then again, Gaslight aren't an emo band. SDRE get a lot of credit for being a relatively "mainstream" emo band, when there are countless bands in the same genre that are better than them.

Gaslight is hyped up as the band that will revive real punk rock. I honestly cannot understand what's so special about them. Everything from the vocals to the lyrics, I'm sure I've heard of it before. SDRE on the other hand created not one, but two classic albums in the 90's emo/indiepop scene, Diary and the Pink album.

bahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah ha. okay. enough with the sarcastic comments, punk. I have never, and will never, say that. it's nothing close to emo. just because you're finding out for the first time that Sunny Day Real Estate don't make out with the emo Gods, doesn't mean you can act all butthurt and make up shit. They are overrated and not even CLOSE to being the best or the most influential emo band. Now of course, most of this is a matter of opinion, but some of it is not. i feel like people adore them because they are an accessible indie-emo band from the 1990's and influenced many bands that are around today. big fucking deal. you should at least know what you're talking about before you start shit.

Really now, I implore you to stop whatever you're doing right now, and listen to SDRE's Diary and Pink album. You won't regret it :-)
You're probably referring to the first wave of emo/emocore bands that started out during the late 80's and early 90's. As for me I consider the 90's midwest emo indie scene to as the definition of emo. That said, TGUK made what is probably the greatest and most influential emo record of all time Something To Write Home About, not to mention, they were the only band from the second generation of emo bands to survive, stay relevant and continue creating music until the 21st century, before their demise in 2005.

I have listened to SDRE's discography countless times. I need no introductions. I am referring to the same emo you are. I implore you to listen to Rites Of Spring's S/T album, or Mineral's The Power Of Failing, Texas Is The Reason's Do You Know Who You Are? or even The Promise Ring's 30 Degrees Everywhere.
I consider the definition of emo to be bands like Rites Of Spring, Texas Is The Reason, Mineral, The Gloria Record, and then other bands/subgenres such as Saetia, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, The Saddest Landscape, etc. "Emo" is what I consider to be emotive hardcore and things similar. That includes Screamo, indie-emo, post-hardcore, and post-emo which is what I would consider The Get Up Kids to be.
TGUK made nowhere near the most influential emo record of all time. Sure, it was a good effort from one of the best post-emo/pop-punk bands of their time, but nowhere near the most influentia; emo album. As I said before, listen to Mineral, Rites Of Spring, Texas Is The Reason, The Promise Ring, or countless other similar bands and then say that STWHA is the most influential emo album of all time. Rites Of Spring were emo pioneers, and I credit them with "creating" the genre, per se.
