IGN gave it a 3 out of 5. That's just alright by their standards, and I usually agree with what they have to say about movies. However, I still really want to see this one. Their only real complaint was that it was slow in some parts, which should have just been cut out. It still has a good rating over at rottentomatoes though. That in and of itself is an accomplishment.

How far does this push Peter Jackson in terms of big time directors?

He proves he's no fluke. This picture is outstanding. Jack Black's performance is fitting. It can get ocassionally cheesy, but it an amazing social commentary and should not be missed. Naomi Watt's gives a downright incredible performance.
Oh yeah, some of the coolest action sequences all year.

ok i know this thread is a few days old, but i went to see the movie on wednesday night and i thought it wasnt as good as it could have been.
an hour and a half into the movie there was still no sight of kong or the idea that kong existed.
the reasons i thought the movie would suck didnt really seem to matter
ie, jack black doing a serious role, the dinosaurs on the island.
it was put together ok, i mean it is a peter jackson movie so there was a lot to it that made it possible to be a absolutely amazing movie...i had nightmares of the natives and the bugs on the island. that right there shows how "real" it felt. i just felt it could have been cut down and the movie would have been great

I thought is was horribly put together....
they left out info that I wanted to know. Like a little more backround on the characters per say.
Also, the unrealism of everything just got out of hand.
The shooting the bugs scene was unneccary and dumb.
I stand by my review of this one.

wow, didn't think anybody else would think so. i did think it was a good 3 star movie. it was fun, but it was so over the top and sloppy in some parts. And like you said, i think peter jackson put in far too many of his own creations and ideas, and really bogged down the story. i loved the mysticism and excitement i felt in the beginning as well as at the end, the middle did me in.
oh, and there were way too many CGI copouts. the dinosaurs were poorly done, and while that chase scene with the herd of brontosaurs was really exciting, come, it was really kind of hokey. i thought there could have been more effort to contribute to some better looking CGIs, if that's the route the filmmakers want to go.
the acting was fine. Naomi Watts was exceptional. I actually enjoyed Adrian Brody. Jack Black was good, but you couldn't help but laugh when he tried to recite some of the film's trademark lines. but all in all, i thought this film fell short in areas that could have made this an epic.
oh and did anyone else catch andy serkis(gollum/king kong) as one of the crew members.

i am unbelievably afraid of bugs. spiders especially but really any bug. so the second the creepy crawly noise started, my eyes went shut and my hood went over my face....so i didnt watch any of it. obviously i could hear it but i didnt watch a single second where the bugs were.
this is gonna sound odd, but it drove me crazy that the t-rex chomped the giant lizard looking dino in half with one bite, but three t-rexes couldnt bring kong down...that just made no sense to me...

this looks like a miserable, expensive piece of crap. especially casting jack black as the lead, he's a comedian not a serious actor and he will never be. narnia is where its at. ever since watching the BBC tapes when I was a kid I dreamed this movie would be made with the special effects of today and it came true. there has been nothing in the theaters lately that has caught my eye other than narnia.

it just honestly doesnt make any sense to me. let them stay bad guys...thats the whole point. they are meant to be the ones you hate in the movie. giving them a soft spot ruins it. and it makes it even worse when they realize it AFTER shit goes down and theyve ruined everything.

it's frustrating to think how much better this movie would've been if Peter Jackson wasn't so full himself and his creative touches.
For the first hour, i really did love this film. the camerawork was great. the acting was superb. it had the excitement of some classic movies. Jack Black was surprising me. and there first encounter with the natives was frightening.
...then it was literally like Peter Jackson just couldn't leave it alone. He throws in dozens of completely useless scenes, with these completely useless creations. then before we knew it he lost the story and the interest. 3 hours was ambitious, and could've worked, but there was a good 30 minutes of footage that served absolutely no purpose. not too mention the CGI's(the brontosaurus chase, bugs, theatre escape in particular) that absolutely shot this movie's chances of being taken seriously.
I really enjoyed the last scenes in New York as well. they were very heartfelt and intense(discarding jack blacks final face shot).
this film just could of been so much better.

I saw King Kong last Thursday. The film could have been slightly shorter, especially in the first third, but this is a minor nitpick of a film that is tremendously entertaining and wonderfully crafted. Tampering with classics is a risky business. Peter Jackson recognized a valid reason for doing so and went for it with his inner movie geek bearing to arms. His film is marvelous entertainment, a great big thumping movie-movie that stands beside, all the while honoring, the greatness of the original. 9/10
Thats my take on it anyway.

You want to know what those 30 minutes of footage that served no purpose were? Staredowns. Staring between Jack and Ann, Ann and Kong, Kong and Jack, Carl and the audience (as in us, not the audience at the premiere), Bruce with himself. It was 1/4 great, 1/4 good, 1/4 staring and 1/4 bad. So many pointless side stories that didn't develop (WHY GIVE JAMIE BELL'S CHARACTER ANY BACK STORY! THERE WAS NO FOLLOW THROUGH!), the ice skating, the vaudeville scene in front of Kong (Monkey's love slap stick!), THE STARING, omg, THE STARING, the brontasaurus chase where somehow they are running the same speed as 100 foot long dinosaurs. God that movie was infuriating. If he wasn't so self indulgent (I loved, LOVED the LotR series and thought he nailed that whole series) in this movie, Jackson could have had a masterpiece on his hands. If it was 2 hours long, it would have been much, much better.
