mewithoutYou – it’s all crazy! it’s all false! it’s all a dream! it’s alright
Release Date: May 19, 2009
Record Label: Tooth & Nail

It’s not often you hear an album described as being accessible and polarizing at the same time, but that’s exactly what happened with it’s all crazy! it’s all false! it’s all a dream! it’s alright, the fourth studio album from mewithoutYou. It’s always been Aaron Weiss’ poetic vision set to post-hardcore that leaned on angst and shouting. But on it’s all crazy, Weiss and company have exchanged that noise for something simpler, as the group focused more on their melodic and folk influences.

Don’t let the lack of riffs and electric guitars fool you though, it’s all crazy is still an intense and passionate mewithoutYou album, just this time it is channeled into pianos, accordions, and lavish compositions. Opening track, “every thought a Thought of You,” is upbeat, as electronic piano chords and a steady drum beat pace Weiss’ poetic verses. The bass lines from Greg Jehanian’s are absolutely pleasant, as it livens up the track even more. Lyrically, Weiss is still exploring theological themes, delving into the Bible and the Qur’an for lyrical inspiration.

But it doesn’t stop there, Weiss has also invested into telling parables, many regarding animals, throughout the album. The best example of this is “the Fox, the Crow, and the Cookie,” which features vibrant acoustic guitar chords, horns, and bells. The addition of violin and subtle plucking round out the track into a delicious piece of music. The experimentation of different musical avenues help develop it’s all crazy into an exciting album.

Older fans of the band will enjoy “bullet to Binary (pt. two)” as Weiss’ vocals come alive against aggressive acoustic chords. Verses like “The potato called from underground "You've got it all turned upside down!/Does the rain that sent each spring anew/To fall on her not fall on you?/You project on her your inward scene/She's a blank external movie screen/But the One who looks out from your eyes/Looks through hers and looks through mine" continue to display the mastery Weiss shows on his lyricism.

The positive nature of “Timothy Hay” shines through on the instrumentation, while “Fig with a Bellyache” presents itself as one of the weirdest yet most intriguing mwY songs ever. “Allah, Allah, Allah” does have a campfire sing-along groove to it, as Weiss exclaims, “In everywhere we look, Allah Allah Allah in everywhere we look.”. But Rickie Mazzotta’s drums boom, and Michael Weiss kicks in one of the few guitar riffs on the album, giving the track a slight, dare I say, Sgt. Peppers’ vibe.

it’s all crazy! it’s all false! it’s all crazy! it’s alright is, as one forum member eloquently put it, “a grower not a shower,” and I happen to agree. It takes a few listens to grasp the lyrical themes and to understand what Weiss and company are trying to accomplish. Weiss’ lyricism focuses a lot on theology as usual, but this time his words aren’t peppered with self-doubt. Instead, animals, nature, fables, and parables tell the story, and it is jarring at first. It’s definitely a different approach, as a lot of the lyrics are simple and nature and repetitive. Musically, this is one of the most ambitious albums of 2009. The musicianship here is incredible. Each song is unique and the instrumentation is beautiful. Kudos to mewithoutYou for staying fresh in a scene where being generic is the norm. The album may come across as crazy, but in the end you’ll realize that’s alright.

Interesting... Good review, Drew. However, no matter how many times I read the review, and no matter how many times I look at the score, I feel like this is an album where you just have to listen to it for yourself and allow it to move you in the way it'll move you, rather than let a review influence it.

That's not to say your review is worthless, but I would guess that you might agree with me, eh?

I never want my reviews to influence how someone feels about an album, I don't want my opinion to mold other people's opinion, I just always hope my reviews will give a different perspective for someone and/or at least intrigue the person to check out the album and make their own judgments, ya dig? thanks for the comment

I love albums that hook you right away because it sounds so unlike everything you've listened to before, but yet sounds familiar. Then with every new listen you find something new to enjoy; where your favorite song on the album changes every couple of weeks. That's how I feel about this band, and that's how I feel about this album. Good review.

Definitely... I listened to the leak (I know, shame on me), and I have no idea what I think of the lyrics. They are rather poetic, but the brutal honesty and stream-of-thought delivery is what made me fall in love with them, so I'm not sure about this. I'll still buy it when it comes out, though, and hopefully it'll grow on me.

Don’t mistake the lack of riffs and electric guitars fool you though

This should be "Don't let the lack of riffs and electric guitars fool you" or "Don't mistake the lack of riffs and electric guitars for [something]". Not sure which you were going for Drew, but good review otherwise. I need to give this album a closer listen, it was impressive on my first go through but definitely different.

Haha it's ok, I've done that myself plenty of times. I always feel like I'm being so nitpicky when I point out grammar mistakes on this site, but they always jump out at me. And I figure people want the best examples of their writing possible out there, so I guess I'm just trying to help haha.

The tuba on "the Fox, the Crow, and the Cookie" make me smile every time I hear it. I'm such a band dork.

But in all seriousness, I can't wait to get my hands on a physical copy of this, so I can enjoy it even more. This is a potential AOTY for me. It just has this majestic feel that also rustic and campy and I absolutely love it.

Yeah, that's a really good way to go about reviews, especially since experience of artistic expression is largely an individual thing.

By the way, anyone (staff) know if Mat Kearney's new album is going to be reviewed on this site? I would love to see one!

Why does ap.net sometimes put reviews up so early? I mean, the album comes out in a month, wouldn't it be better for all parties to get excitement say the week before so after someone reads it they can go out and buy it insteadnof asking where they can get the leak.

Sorry for my lil rant, I guess I'm jealous that you get to listen to it so far in advance. Great review, I am looking forward to picking it up though between as cities burn and Manchester orchestra should be pretty "worn in" by then

You could just read the lyric booklets for this band and experience their weight (seriously)!

Anyway, they've become less avant-garde as they've progressed, but they've definitely made positive changes. The content of their music has matured an incredible amount, and the imagery is incredibly rich and demanding.

hmm kinda disappointed, I can't help but miss their old sound. This isn't bad but it's still a shame because i loved 'Brother Sister' and 'Catch us for the foxes' so much, I will however still pick it up. I don't care much for all the religious lyrics and imagery, I just loved the passionate vocal delivery and music of the old stuff. Aaron Weiss just isn't that great a singer, regardless I'll listen to it properly when it comes out, hopefully it will grow on me.

To sort of expand on this, I'm pretty sure their mother is Sufi, and dad is Jewish. So they incorporate pieces of each. But the brothers are Christian.
I also remember reading that "Allah, Allah, Allah" is just a reference to God, but in Arabic, not Islam's Allah.

I'd rather not get very theological and stuff, but I'd have to disagree. I would say that the key is Jesus Christ not being the Son of or part of Islam's Allah, but He is in Christianity's. That's a pretty big difference.

I think this album will blow me away musically, but I'm rather worried to see whether the basic, repetitive song structuring will result in a loss of the lyrical depth and density that has made mwY my favorite band. On "every thought a Thought of You", I like what lyrics are there, but there's just not a lot of room for them to develop as much as the lyrics on their older records.

Yeah, on previous albums years after first listening it I experience a new dimension to them. Especially Catch For Us The Foxes. Just a few weeks ago I was listening to that and I noticed some new hidden meaning I'd not experienced before. This album seems lyrically straightforward and quite simple... to the point. I am not sure if there is any depth.

I hope I enjoy it still, but that was one of the main reasons I loved mewithoutYou.

This album is alot like the new As Cities Burn in the way that I'm having trouble getting into both of them. I'm sure that I will eventually wind up liking both but right now I don't know where I would place this on the scale.

A poster on AP.net said this "I just read this in AMP the other day but apparently Aaron and Michael were raised under Sufism, which they say is a branch of Islam."
Yes. I do believe that Aaron's mother is Sufi.

Don't...uhh...quote me...

hmm kinda disappointed, I can't help but miss their old sound.
If that's how you feel and you haven't checked out their first full length, [A--->B] Life, then you've got to. It's nothing but passionate vocals and good music. Great lyrics too.

again exactly how i feel. and its funny cause listening to the tooth and nail podcast the djs really hyped this album up and didnt seem to do anything for hell or high water. now this album turns out to be a disappointment and as cities is amazing...hmmmmm
I feel the exact opposite haha mwY's new album is just amazing to me and ACB has been hard to get into and a little disappointing.

Eh, I actually don't mind them. They make this album feel joyous and happy, which is a great change of pace for the band, which is usually full of self doubt and loathing

Same, but for some reason, the band has matured and developed just as my personal life has. This album couldn't be any better for me in the stage of life I'm in right now. It's like they were reading my mind haha

LOVE this album. I checked it out based on this review- I was going to skip it because I felt like I'd outgrown mwY. And holy shit, I their progression is fantastic. I love it when bands prove me wrong.

You know... I listened to this. And I though "wow, this is not nearly as good as their past three albums". The vocals being almost completely sung, not spoken or yelled(I was so used to that delivery from this band) , didn't really do it for me.

However, I found myself listening over and over again... I don't even know what I think about this album. It's parable-like songs are so different from anything I usually listen to... It's just such an interesting album. Very haunting, in a dream like sort of way (as it's title suggests).

I think I really love it.

I'm listening to the stream now. For the most part, I'd be willing to say this might be the best album of the decade. One thing annoys me, however; most of the songs in the second half sound far too similar in their opening lines.

I'm listening to the stream. This band always makes interesting music and that is why I continue to go to their shows and buy their music. This record is so damn good. Kudos to Mewithoutyou for not making the same redundant records.

Not too ridiculous really, this is an incredible album. They have always been awesome, but this is just so unique and interesting. Took at least ten listens to really appreciate any of it.

This is the only mwY album I've liked less the more I've listened to it. Was curious on the first listen, but after a few more spins I'm really disappointed they didn't pursue furthering themselves in their original genre.

The talent is still there. The creativity is still there. But between the sing-songy, lazy campfire-esque songs and the lack of anything insanely catchy, I will appreciate the band's attempt to be genre-busting but wish I would have checked out the album before buying it.

This album's boring in comparison to the first two. Don't get me wrong, it's good. I just find myself yearning to skip to the next song after about a minute.
