It might be just me, but does anyone notice how great the 80's were compared to the 90's and on in the Winners of the Heisman? Like, what is so different about today's players that is different about guys from the 70's and 80's
Some 80's Winners: Barry Sanders, Tim Brown, Vinny Testaverde, Marcus Allen, Doug Flutie
Some 90's Winners: Chris Weinke, Jason White, Ty Detmer, Ron Dayne, Eric Crouch
I don't know..it just seems that if I'm a coach I rather have Barry Sanders and Tim Brown on my team, rather than Chris Weinke and Ron Dayne. I don't know..it just seems the past couple of winners aren't NFL calibur.
Except for Carson Palmer that is. ;) And we'll have to wait for Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush. And in general, more Heisman Trophy winners DON'T do well in the NFL than do. For example..anyone ever talk about how great Chris Weinke is? Yet, I hear how great Antonio Gates is and not only was he not a Heisman Trophy winner, he didn't even play College Football! Haha.
My point is, does everyone think more Heisman Winners succeed or don't succeed in the NFL?

I think the college game has changed so much to where a lot of these great players are basically system guys. Guys who work great in a system on one team but that's it it doesn't translate anywhere else. I think this could be a problem with Alex Smith.
Those guys in the 80's were raw talent. They weren't system guys they just were real good. I think Leinart and Bush may be the start of those guys again. They are guys who are just smart and talented.

Palmer, Leinart and Bush will bring the name of Heisman back around.

Jason White :shake:
I don't even think he got drafted. His two BCS performances were atrocious. The guy was a madman during season play though...

Jason White was on the Titans. I think he had one solid drive.

Jason White was on the Titans. I think he had one solid drive. They probably picked him up as a free agent, because I'm almost positive he didn't get drafted.

Never mind, that was Matt Mauck.

A QB in college can be made by his recievers (Ryan Leaf, Weinke could have closed his eyes and throw the ball at FSU and Warrick or Coles would run and get it) the NFL game is faster and requires you to think on your feet a little more. . The NFL relies more on checkoffs and reads. That's the only explanation I can think of for QBs.

Well, guys like crouch ran the option in college football. That kind of stuff just doesn't work in the nfl. I guess you can't fault them for that. it's just 2 seperate levels of play. I think most of the winners deserved it.

Also a lot of small QBs make it in college whereas they cant see over the 6'7" monsters blocking for them in the NFL.

Something like that. I loved it when he was being chased by the 6'5" defensive ends and the ends couldnt get their hands on him because he was so small.

he's the backup on the Patriots. I'd know, because he took the field in the 4th quarter of their raping of the Bills.
It's funny, cause when he used to play for the Bills, he'd drop back, jump to see over the line, then throw the ball.

i think the added pressure of being a "heisman trophy winner" has something to do with the failure nowadays

i wouldn't call flutie a heisman success, he played in the cfl for like 10 seasons after being an nfl backup his first couple seasons

How about Charlie Ward, 6 feet and he won it in like..umm 1993 if I remember.

A lot of those guys were system players, Eric Crouch is the perfect example.
Look at Carson Palmer, he's one of the three best QB's in the NFL right now and this is only his second season as a full-time starter. It's all about how you play in college, these kids who end up in gimmicky offenses have a lot of work to do at the pro level.
usc is a pro style offense because of carroll. leinart's gonna be sick in the nfl.

And that's why if I were a QB, I'd kill to play at USC. You play in that system long enough, you're basically an NFL QB coming out of college, the only difference is the talent level in the pros.

That's why I hate the Option play. That prepares nobody for the NFL.

the nfl should bring in the option play for qbs like vick, brooks, mcnabb, etc. i think it would help them excel at the pro level.

aren't college coaches obligated to win in college, rather than getting their kids ready for the pros?

Yeah, I never said they shouldn't use it. I'm just saying, I don't like it.

It's funny to watch the QB get layed out though. They know it's coming so as soon as he laterals it back BOOM. :D

I don't think Leinart is going to be better than Palmer.... but Reggie Bush is going to shred the NFL
