View Full Version : Michelle Branch Posts Interesting Statement

12/14/05, 06:28 PM
Michelle Branch recently shut down her messageboard after becoming frustrated with "fans'" constant negativity toward her new band The Wreckers. The statement I've attached below was posted on the messageboard by Michelle before she shut it down. Just a piece of advice, I highly suggest reading the statement because it gives interesting insight on the music business, fame, and her label Maverick Records'.
Alright, I don't even know why I am still awake seeing as I have to be up in a few hours to feed Owen.
What I am most frustrated at, I suppose is...I pay money to keep this website up so all of you "fans" can talk about our music. Why would I want to spend the money so the majority of you can sit around and b1tch about us?
I understand that you are frustrated with the fact that there isn't any music for you to listen to. Don't you think Jessica and I are frustrated too?? We finished this record over a year ago and were sent on a lame ass tour we didn't want to be on. It was a horrible idea to headline a show playing music that nobody had ever heard. Maverick wanted to make a quick buck, and unfortunately, we were obligated by contract to do so. I was 5 months pregnant when we started that tour and believe me...it was the last place I wanted to be. Then I got pushed into doing a Santana song I didn't want to do (I didn't write it either, Shanks wanted me to sing it so bad, that was a bargaining tool), Maverick wouldn't let me do it unless Jess was on it so they would get "free" promotion for a record they didn't even understand or believe in for the most part. The record wasn't released because Maverick didn't want me promoting an album pregnant. They thought it would look bad to my young fans...bull.
As far as "biting the hand that feeds you"...
I would give nothing more than to play music in a shitty bar and fold clothes at The Gap for a living. My "being famous" has done nothing but ruin my relationship with my parents, mostly my Father and it has made me hate doing what I used to love more than life itself...playing music. I have been pushed around and now most of you see me as someone who I never really was, and most of you can't accept the plain fact that people change and grow up and I'm not the little girl you think I am. I have a family of my own now, a baby...the last thing I could imagine doing is making music. I'm fine financially (although I don't make millions contrary to popular belief.) and being a famous musician has brought nothing to my life besides strife. (Okay, I met my wonderful husband and bandmate because of it.) I have maybe written two songs in the past year. That's ridiculous. This isn't fun for me anymore. I'm sick of sucking dicks to get my music heard, putting on a fake smile, and saying things that are acceptable.
On the contrary, The Wreckers album makes me very proud and excited again. It's almost like my first day at a new school. It’s a fresh start. I'm finally excited to tour (although I need to find a nanny!) and I am looking forward to seeing what fans think.
You know, I CAN take the criticism. I just don't understand why I should pay for an arena for you to do it. If you are a "fan" why do you speak about Jessica and I in that way?
I never wanted to be put on a pedestal... I just wanted to make music. And believe me, many times I have thought I was going to quit. It's too much energy to pretend it's fun. You can call me a baby if you'd like, but life is too short to spend it being miserable.
This board is going to be shut down tonight. I think we all need a break. When the Wreckers album finally comes out, we'll see the ones who decided to stick around. As for the rest of you, I meant it when I said "f-off"

more power to her! i've only heard one song, but the wreckers sound pretty good. hopefully we'll get to hear the album someday. i had no idea she had a kid though... i think she's been hanging around those hanson boys too long. it's outrageous she had to start a tour while 5 months pregnant. how could it be deemed inappropriate for her to promote, but it was fine to have her play shows? she may be young, but she's also married.

did you ever have a dream or an aspiration that you would go to great lengths to reach? think about it. her passion was music, her life was music. the fucking gun was the label saying "hey i am not going to distribute/promote/whatever your music ((HER LIFE)) if you don't do what we tell you to, ie magazines, photo shoots, etc.". in that circumstance, they might as well have put a gun to her head because they compromised things that she valued very much. obviously she did realize that doing all that bullshit maverick told her to do wasn't making her any happier and we can even fault her for thinking that a major label would keep her interests as a priority over their own wallets. but don't say that it was an easy decision for her to make.
ps. i am so fucking sick of people who never try to put themselves in someone else shoes before they run their mouths.
pps. i totally dig michelle branch. i own one of her cds.

if major labels are so bad, QUIT FUCKING SIGNING TO THEM. all i hear is people bitching about how their record company fucks them and sucks the fun out of music. she could do just fine financially and retain alot of artistic control if she released her shit on an indie. she is talented enough to reach a decent level of success without whoring herself. i am so fucking tired of people getting caught up in the glamour of being a rock star and then realizing it's not all it's cracked up to be and crying about it. MAJOR LABELS SUCK. they have made what is supposed to be an ART into an industry. they don't give a shit about integrity or honesty, just money. they will do whatever it takes to exploit their artists for whatever they can. and don't give me some bullshit about how island records or capital or some other major label bullshit company is "better than the others." they aren't. they may be better at hiding the fact that they will probably end up screwing you, but they are really no better. you don't think island has considered the same (or similar) shit that sony pulled? i promise you they have. the whole philosophy and purpose of a major label is just like that of any other corporation: make money. they will suck whatever dick they have to in order to complete this goal.
this is why the major label will eventually die. it is has no integrity, it is faceless, it is the antithesis of rock and roll. nobody gives a shit about ripping off wal-mart (well, they shouldn't) becuase it makes thousands of dollars every minute. it exploits poor communities and puts out hard-working "mom-and-pop" stores out of business on a daily basis. major labels are pretty much the same. huge facelss corporations with no single person that can be held accountable. stealing music from them is a victimless crime (the bands don't really count as victims becuase they make shit from album sales anyway) i feel bad stealing from indies becuase they are a legitimate business and one person is directly affected. at least with victory records i can say "tony brummel is a douchebag," instead of "fuck sony." at least i know i am hurting him and his hand-picked staff members by stealing from their label. there is no reason for me to care about stealing from majors.
anyway, back to my original point. just don't sign to majors.

it indirectly helps the artist, because the more albums a band sells the more money the label is going to fork over for promotion, tours, etc. which is where the band sees more money come from. Yeah, the money from record sales themselves don't benefit the artists, but the numbers do.
basically the label has to make money before the band can.

I'm sorry but I have to agree with this guy. Yes I have never had a deal with Maverick records so I guess I don't ACTUALLY know what it's like but she did sign the contract. If you dont want to do something then don't do it. If your record label threatens to take away your contract unless you go on TRL and lick Carson Daly's asshole and you don't really want to do it then you tell them no. Or you say okay and dont show up. Yes I also see how breaking it off with your family isn't in the contract but i'm sure the record label didn't tell her do leave her family. Music biz or not if you wanna be with and support your family then you do it. Signing the contract may been something she did when she young and stupid but it was still something she did. I knew when I was five years old that record labels were pieces of shit and im sure she did to. She made the concious decision to sign the contract full well knowing that there was a possibility that her life might change. She grew up,realized she had made a mistake and now wants to take it back. There have been plenty of bands that have given up the major label deals and waited for something smalller. You always have control of your life at some point and gave that control away so quit whinning. Record do need to change but record artists also need to stop being so fucking gullable.
P.S: If I fucked up my spelling on anything in this then feel free to call the grammer police and have then arrest me....I think I hear the sirens now.

yeah you start blowing off the record label, then find out how easy it is to get another deal after that happens, major or indie.

yes they are truly monsters.
yeah you start blowing off the record label, then find out how easy it is to get another deal after that happens, major or indie.
Any indie label worth their salt would sign a band that was unhappy with their pervious label. If they didn't then they are not a very good label. Maybe you would turn down an artist because he didn't buttfuck Sony records but most people wouldn't.

One, I don't think she knew what she was in for when she was signed to a major. Two, they did in a way make her. She said it was in her contract. If she didn't do the things they told her to do, she wouldn't get paid and she wouldn't be able to pay bills. Three, she's not that rich. She even stated she doesn't make millions. True enough, nobody held a gun to her head to perform...but, if she wants to make money, she's going to have to do it. And unless someone buys her out of her contract, or Maverick cuts her, she's pretty much at their mercy. Sucks how certain labels treat their artists, it really does make you more observant of where you sign.
p.s.-guys, let's class it up a little in here. There are ladies that come to the boards too. Misogyny is something I'd expect from a jock rock board...not here.

Yeah, I read. I'm stating my opinion. Obviously there's something more to the story than her getting signed and that tearing her family apart. I hate people that act like they know what it's like to be someone they've never met TOO.

Wow, that's odd hearing some of those words for her! Although I think it's great that she has enough courage to speak out her mind on this whole issue. As for her music, I can say that I've liked a couple of them.

when you sign to a major, you've got to play the game. yes, you can back out eventually, but after all the work, would you want to? she played the game, thinks its piss, and is upset. i feel bad for her.
i agree. i think she went along with doing things she didn't want to because she thought it would help get the wreckers' album out. i hope she's able to jump ship... then she could sign with 3cg or something.
im glad she spoke out like that, it shows she's not afraid to say what she thinks and f all the people that just bitch and moan about her band

Well i did always think she could write a song and it seemed like she enjoyed the last Santana song. It is good that she wrote this indeed. I hope SOTY doesn't get sucked in like this, but it's different with solo acts. I kind of always thought she had a bit more attitude than I could handle when I saw her on interviews and stuff, but it seems as though that is being put to good use now.

people who comment on how easy it is to say no to a major label, to a label that essentially decides if you live in a nice condo on the upper east side or if you live in a shithole with no running water or electricity....its actually not that easy. maybe that isnt the true reality, but you all should get the picture that this label was her way of 1) doing what she loved and 2) getting by from day to day. to say "oh well she signed a contract bla bla bla deal with it" or " bla bla bla don't show up to work"...is dumb, obviously you've never been in a situation like that. most of you probably talk while you deliver pizzas so you can buy your next video game or your next cigarrette pack. who knows. point is, maybe she had to dump her integrity and people can call her out and say she should have done something about it....but when it all boils down to it, she had a lot on the line.

i doubt i have any beginnings of the ideas of what that family is going through, and what i would do if i was so conflicted, torn, pushed around, going through such contractual hell. and i can't believe they made her tour during the second half of her pregnancy, then told her she couldn't promote a record while pregnant due to what they considered "fan paradigm". the corporate labels will have to work very hard to be recieving much of my money in the near future. that's all

Hate to bust bubbles, but Michelle isn't that hot. Yes, those Maxim pics are... but that's a lot of airbrushing. In person, not so much. Trust me on that one. And her attitude is even uglier.
I work with a production group and we had her for a concert spring of 2004. It was the worst experience of my life, professionally and well, just being there. Her show was horrible and half-assed. She didn't give a shit about anything and was a constant problem, with quite a diva-like (and reclusive) attitude. She didn't want to meet or see any fans, not even the ones she was binded by contract to meet through radio "meet and greet" contests. Her manager had to practically pull her off the bus to meet them, in which she quickly signed a few autographs without speaking or smiling, then left.... leaving fans upset and confused.
Frankly, I think her post was admirable, but I have no other respect for her. Sure she got treated like shit by her label, but she wasn't an innocent angel before then, at least not in my eyes.
And needless to say, the promotional poster we recieved from her manager is now used as a dartboard in our office. Literally. We made it a game... you get the most points for hitting her buck-teeth. It's fun.

i actually got signed to maverick last night and they are totally giving me all the freedom i want. they don't make me do anything i don't want to do. they basically cater to me in every way possible. Michelle branch is a spoiled brat who is just impossible to work with. she's selfish and irrational. she chose to be a whore and we should all kill her. maverick rules. look out for my new cd to be released whenever i want it, and i will be on an awesome tour of my choice that will completely revolve around my schedule and never once inconvenience me. maverick rules. screw michelle. you're crazy, girl.
i figured since so many on here are pretending that we know anything about what it's like to be michelle branch, i might as well just go all the way. but if we were to go crazy and stop being full of crap for two minutes, we might realize that we're in no position to judge and we should just applaud that post. that took some balls and she's gonna pay for that one. she just stood up to maverick records. i bet you wouldn't write that your boss was a douche bag somewhere that he might read it. and "douche bag" is pretty g rated compared to her post. look, she probably made some bad choices, let's face it, she did not have a gun to her head. however, this was her whole dream. could she have gone indie? yes. but you see, there are so many "scene" kids who think that you are only legit if you are on an indie label, it pays the bills, it's fine, dont worry about it. of course, you are not artists making music, trying to get the biggest audience you can find. cuz let's face it, actual artists are pouring their life into making music and i don't think they're ever gonna reach a point where they'll say "yeah, 300,000 people have heard my music, i'll pretty much settle for that." no, they want to get the best exposure they can get. they wanna be sold in a god forsaken wal mart because it is the most accessible place in the whole world. they need someone who can get them on mtv. and the money doesn't hurt. but seriously, this is their whole, and majors have the most to offer.
unfortunately, they also have the most power and biggest tendency to screw over. but i mean, how many people have been in a crappy relationship of any type and you're thinking to urself, "ok this is the last straw and then it will just get better after this." maybe it was naive of her to think that way, but u have to be a soulless idiot to not feel bad for her, and even understand how she could have ended up in this situation.
i think that it took a lot of balls for her to speak out. she makes good music and deserves a label that will treat her right. it sucks that she let herself get played by them for this long, but props to her for breaking the silence.....and holy crap, she did do that. i guess she's not as innocent as she seems

You or her? Don't be such an ass.
Why not? I can give a rats ass about her, I have had a strong distaste for her since her many uncalled for comments concerning all girls in pop music sucking but her. She is pop musics verison of a scenester. Excuse me for calling bullshit on her manifesto, I am sticking to my guns. This is a rag rant. I will not pretend to like someone whos music never crossed my mind until it was posted on APnet. The post was put here to expose a labels shady tactics first hand. Not to find a new hero who is "sticking it to the man" Anyway me not liking michelle branch had nothing to do with being able to take a cheap shot at her on APnet, me disliking her is very well validated so in saying that, I will not resort to name calling because this is a forum and you are intitled to your opinion however obstructed it may be.
