04/26/09, 10:10 PM
Weezer because the Blue album and Pinkerton stick with me more than anything Muse has done. Although I do love Muse.
Anton Djamoos
04/26/09, 10:10 PM
Muse, no doubt. I'm actually surprised that they're losing this badly to Weezer. Seems to me there are just more people that have listened to Weezer over Muse.

04/26/09, 10:12 PM
The Used is scarily close to Muse.

Pinkerton is way better than any record done by weezer and by any other band in these poll, muse mmmm good band but never beeen really into them (doesn't make them bad, I actually think they are going to be remembered as one of the greatest UK bands along Pink floyd, the Who, The Police, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead and many other GREAT UK BANDS when time comes by)

You definitely need to check out HAARP. The guys freaking sold out Wembley 2 days in a row (I believe it's over 40,000 people). Absolutely incredible concert DVD, after watching it for the first time it further infuriated me that the last time they were in the States they had to open for MCR. Unfortunately, I don' t think they will win this round.

Eh, not really a competition for me. I like Weezer but they don't match up to Muse imo.
i can absorb weezer.. so does muse..i adore 2 first albums from the used. but the third one is crappy to me. so, i chose for the used. haha

hahaha i always laugh when people post videos. LISTEN TO THIS!!!
ha. I've listened to Muse. I just dont see a contest against Weezer, IMO of course. I like the mellowness (is that a word?) to weezer's albums. And weezer = high school.
I feel bad that the used is taking a verbal beating. I can't say much about them... I'll check out their set at bamboozle and decide if I think the thrashing is justified.

In any event, I disagree about Muse being "mediocre". Even if you don't like them, you can't deny the kind of performance they put on live.

I think Muse are for sure a live band. I lost a lot of interest in them over 6/7 months until I refreshed my memory on a ton of live vids, and was blown away all over again. Though, I disagree about the music being sub-par, unless you mean in comparison to their live versions.

Pretty much every pop-punk/emo band to come out in the past 10 years has cited The Blue Album and/or Pinkerton as major influences.
Muse may be more popular in the UK, but in America, they've really only been popular for the past 4 or 5 years, whereas Weezer have been relevant for 15 years now.

Weezer's two great albums beat out Muse's career of mediocrity and stealing Radiohead's sound. This is just a cop-out excuse to dislike Muse, relied upon as an insult by people who haven't listened to more than a few songs by either band. All the two bands have in common are falsetto vocals, which are barely comparable. Muse is a rock based, pop-focused band with minimal use of electronics and noise to create pop hooks, as opposed to Radiohead who focus on atmosphere, lack (save for OK Computer, though the applications are again different) the guitar wankery, and aren't as structured or pop-sensible/accessible. I have absolutely no idea how anyone who wasn't completely ignorant of each band could possibly mistake one for the other.

I mean in the scene today, currently. I gathered up a bunch of my peers and kids in the scene and put on a Weezer song and a Muse song, I have a feeling more would recognize the Muse song. They've achieved great success, and rightfully so, and are much more "current" than Weezer. It doesn't hurt that Supermassive Black Hole was in Twilight, either. That was my point, but what you're saying is completely true.

You say "pop-focused" and "accessible", I say less creative, shittier rip off. Don't get me wrong, I don't "mistake one for the other"; that's why I called them mediocre, because duh, Radiohead =/= mediocre. I mean, just listen to Radiohead's Airbag/How Am I Driving? EP. At least three of those tracks sound exactly like Muse circa 2006.
At any rate, The Blue Album & Pinkerton>everything and anything Muse has put out, so this argument is really irrelevant.

well maybe if you interpreted her post correctly you'd realize she mentioned electronics in an inclusive manner and not an exclusive manner -- she only used the word "minimal" to signify that their sound isn't entirely built around synthesizers, but rather, built from rock instrumentation with synths added in. in other words, the use of synth is not excessive by her parameters.

No, I think she meant "minimal" as in "less than Radiohead." Do they have 'noise' built in too, in an inclusive manner and not an exclusive manner, as she also said? At any rate, this hardly makes them synth pop.

hahaha for one thing muse definitley incorporates synthesizers into their sound more often, and for another they use them in an entirely different way. i'd love to see you try to tell me muse were aiming with the same result with their electronics on "black holes and revelations" as radiohead were with "kid A". would be very amusing to see you attempt to find any similarities.

I think you're confusing 'synthesizer' with 'piano/keyboard'. This is a synthesizer:
wXl3Qej1tjM
This is a keyboard, as done by Muse:
ZyLx0qc_gKc
and again:
Pgum6OT_VH8
And to just hammer home the point I was trying to make in the first place, tell me this Radiohead song, circa 1998, does not sound like Muse circa 2006:
BSXMjAEFqLc
and again:

Of course, Radiohead does it better because duh, they are better, but still, clearly similar songs released by different bands nearly a decade apart.

also, way to compare muse to one of radiohead's most straightforward, accessible songs. if you compared the most pop-oriented sides to any alternative band you'd find similarities, and radiohead's sound there is just as openly derived from other things as muse's. you might as well say radiohead rips off of nirvana citing "creep" as your example. but hey why dont you compare that song up there to this one and continue proving yourself wrong.

No, I think she meant "minimal" as in "less than Radiohead." Do they have 'noise' built in too, in an inclusive manner and not an exclusive manner, as she also said? At any rate, this hardly makes them synth pop. What I have gathered from your posts is that all you've heard from Muse are tracks off of Black Holes and Revelations, and haven't heard any of the rest of their discography, which is straight up rock and not comparable to Radiohead in the slightest.
Two falsetto vocalists and a little bit of electronic noodling are far from a definitive argument for one band thieving off of another. You failed to actually address the differences I cited, and instead opted to question claims I didn't actually make, ie: your reference to synth-pop.
It is apparent to me that you haven't listened to enough of one or the other, or perhaps both to be able to back up the accusation you're making.
Let's then, completely disregard the obvious, and focus on the general similarities between the two bands:
Use of piano: Radiohead use almost awkward chords to create delicate, haunting melodies that tend to sit under the meat of the song and carry the length of it. Muse's use of piano is considerably more dramatic and sweeping, often only used as introductions or bridges between raging guitar wankery.
Vocals: Thom Yorke's falsetto is soft and expressive, often ending lines delicately and with subtle pronunciation. Matt Bellamy's is piercing and powerful, almost shrill and operatic at times. Yorke's lengthy notes tend to remain consistent, whereas Bellamy tends to have more vibrato.
Electronics: Radiohead use electronics primarily to create an atmosphere, and set the tone and mood of the song, whereas Muse (and their use of electronics is new as of Black Holes) are much less subtle and blatantly include them in the song's bare bones.
Guitars: Radiohead's last four albums haven't been guitar-centric, using guitars to create textures and atmosphere, whereas Muse as a band are known for their building their songs around spacey rock riffs and solos. Certainly In Rainbows contains prominent guitar throughout, but (ignoring completely the fact that these sound nothing like anything Muse has ever written) it's used primarily to flavour the album, and at least half of the tracks focus entirely on different musical aspects.
So you see, even the details of Muse and Radiohead that are worth comparing differ vastly in execution and utilization. I am not by any means arguing that Muse are a better band. They aren't. It is my point however, that it is unfair, ignorant, and wildly inaccurate to label Muse as a "rip-off" band.
