I think it would be cool if a newsworthy item originates in the forums that a newspost links to that, instead of the news forum. I used to do this on my old site (which was not nearly as complex as your code), but it worked really awesome..I'm not sure how difficult it is for you, but I'm sure you could manage it if you like the idea.
It keeps the discussions together, it's really nice. Plus it draws to the general forum (which was my original goal when I did it.. though I guess you don't need the traffic like I did, ha).
