the media is blowing it out of proportion. The only people that have died from it live in Mexico. Everyone in the U.S. that has contracted it has lived.

First of all, every time I hear pandemic on the news I now think of guinea pigs (thanks South Park) Second: There's a new health scare every year, just wash your hands. I mean c'mon less than 50 cases in the whole US? There is plenty of other things to worry about.
Pf, nah.
The medias are just spreading panic. It is the same as with the bird flu few years ago. About 420 people died then.
Now think about the normal flu. Every year 250.000 to 500.000 people are dying every year because of it. Well, most of them are rather old though.
Of course we shouldn't underestimate it, but with the miedicine from today I am not really afraid.

A new flu that popped up in mexico and it's bene found in about 12 or so countries I think? Maybe more.
It's killed about 100 people in mexico and there are a bunch of cases popping up in the USA. There is much speculation that it could become the next global pandemic.

Holy shit, that's messed up. 12 countries is quite a few for it to just pop up in. I hope it doesn't get out of hand. Thanks for the info.
Kind of because I contract sickness so often/easily.

It started in Mexico so it would make sense that there have been deaths there first. There are two deaths in California that may be because of the swine flu but haven't been confirmed. It would be foolish to completely dismiss the swine flu because it is serious and spreading rather quickly.
That being said, I do agree that the constant media coverage is a little ridiculous. There is no reason to create a panic. Best to prepare for the worst and pray for the best.

yeah. Its just funny when you look at the stats from all the countries that have confirmed cases, the ONLY country that has had deaths is Mexico.
There are people in the U.S. that have contracted it and have fought it off in 4 days.
As far as fatalities from swine flu go, I really think its just a quality of healthcare issue

36,000 people die from the flu in the US every year. No one has died yet here.
The only people who need to worry are those who live close to Mexico. That's a fact, not even my opinion.

I'm not worried yet, however, I believe there is a reason for panic. There has already been 1 suspected death that was the cause of the Swine Flu in California, and has even caused a state of emergency. The media is keeping it within reason, not blowing it out of proportion. What most people don't know is that there is no vaccine to treat Swine Flu if you contract it, the only thing that will keep you alive is your immune system. This is practically the next SARS.

This is a more dangerous outbreak than bird flu. There's no proof that you can get it from eating pork (unless the handler of the meat had swine flu) so don't worry.

SARS v 2.0
it seems pretty bad in mexico but i think im pretty safe here in aussie. i dont think it will get really bad here
It is almost confirmed that we have a case of swine flu as well, though I am still not really worried.
This person was on vacation in Mexico, or took at least a stop there. Still I think the medical care is good enough to prevent something really bad.
A sample of the virus will be sent to a company (Baxter), which is located in a suburb where I live, to study it and develop something against it.

Not really. I haven't been to Mexico, nor do I know anyone who has. It's blown out of proportion. But they have to do that, because if on the off chance they didn't, and it spread, everyone would wonder why the government didn't do something about it.

That's not a fact, it's an ignorant, misinformed statement by someone who doesn't know (or didn't take the time to learn) what s/he is talking about. There are people not even close to Mexico who have swine flu, as well as people who have visited Mexico and brought back swine flu. I live in Delaware and at the University there are 10 confirmed cases of swine flu. Most of these are likely kids who went on spring break to Mexico, however a couple of them contracted it from others and...get this...they don't live anywhere near Mexico!! Holy ish, Batman!

SARS
Monkey Pox
Anthrax
Mad Cow Disease
Bird Flu
MRSA
Every summer, our media comes up with a new disease that is going to be the next "global pandemic" that will kill us all. It's all a ratings plot. Our media continues to fail us.

Hah. Fail indeed. Your point was that the only people who need worry are the ones close to Mexico. Wrong. Delaware is not remotely close to Mexico (ok, maybe in a cosmic sense) and people here have it. And people in other countries too.

Dumb, the media is trying to get me to care about something so it will get them higher ratings/more money, but my unquenchable apathy has them beaten easily. Maybe if there wasn't a new fucking doomsday illness every single year I might actually care enough to know how it's transmitted and what the symptoms are. But no, I won't even go that far.

You're right. And while we're busy not worrying or worrying or whatever, SARS is slowly making a comeback. It was all part of the plan: get us all to worry/not worry/whatever about swine flu, and while people are distracted/not distracted, SARS is slowly sneaking in while everyone's paying/not paying attention. And it's not alone; it brought bird flu with him. And slowly tagging behind is mad cow disease. And a million other diseases I was supposed to spend my whole summer terrified of contracting but decided that I was going to live my life instead. All of this is dumb, stupid and dumb, and you're never going to get me to worry about it.
I think I'm gonna lay down now. I think I got that Y2K bug that's been going around.

And it's all traced back to Mexico. I don't live near it, and no one I know around here is going soon or has been there recently. Therefore, I am safe.

I'm kind of worried because I live 45 minutes away from San Antonio, and there have been school closings here in Austin because of it. I think like, a 4 year old contracted it or something.
But I'm not too worried because you've just gotta keep clean and healthy/cover your mouth when you cough/etc.

Which shouldn't count as a U.S. death, because it was a Mexican child on vacation in the states, according to everyone at my school. That's kind of a b.s. way to scare the shit out of hypochondriacs around the country.

I wasn't(because I was like, well Bird flu and sars just went away)then I was(because my teacher told me the world health organisation has put it to 5 on the health emergency scale, hasn't got over 3 since 1940 and this organisation doesn't lie about things so there IS going to be a pandemic of some proportion)but now I'm not because I realise you're most likely to just get a bad flu, people will die but not a whole lot hopefully. Treatable. Only thing I'm worried about is apparently, rather than being threatening to old/vulnerable people like most diseases it actually has a worse effect on healthier people. And I am 16, no allergies, no previous medical problems, non smoker, do a lot of sport and ideal weight for my height so I guess I could be hit pretty bad.

I am still AMAZED that everyone considers that a "US death." The effect that the media has on people is unreal. The kid died from pneumonia and wasn't even a US citizen.
I'll say it again, I'm far more scared of the medias effect on our population than I am of the swine flue.

I think its stupid all the commotion they are having about this. ok so a feww 70 or watever ppl die out of billions and billions in the whole world thats really not that much and you see everyone with masks and more people have died from car accidents and not everyone wears seat belts. How bout the fact that more than 200,000 people died from aids and no one decides to wear condoms? This world is just going NUTZ! X-)
