I don't know if this will make any sense, but in college when you are taking your General Education requirements for your major, what are the point of classes that are not requirements? Are they just to boost your GPA?

colleges want to see you have a well rounded education and learn about a variety of things so they make u take a bunch of classes in different subjects as your general eds, if that makes sense

ya plus it's to help people realize what they really might like. In HS you can't take courses on cinema arts and stuff but college exposes you to that. My gf is a perfect example...she came into college headstrong about being a bio major and having a career in research...after one semester here she's decided that she might minor in bio and focus on cinema instead. It's to help broaden your scope of learning and such. To provide a true "liberal arts" education.

But in all actually, if you already focused about your major and career, wouldn't it just be a waste of money for books + enrollment?

yes!

i think it is so stupid to have to take classes that are off-subject to your major. my major is new media and technology, so why do i have to take so many psych classes? and why do i have to have so many credit hours of a foreign language? it is a waste of time and money to me, especially when i have such a busy life aside from school and studying!

I FEEL YOUR PAIN!

It may seem pointless now, and it may seem pointless for years to come, but maybe somewhere down the line you'll be glad you took those classes.

totally agree...I know what they say...that's what I said...but the school makes a ton of profit off of general ed classes. We pay the price.

Not if you pick classes that actually interest you. The History of Rock n Roll for example, I to take two Arts & Humanities courses, so rather than take an english class I took something I would enjoy and got a lot out of it.

I personally think it's a good idea, but it really depends on how your school lays it out for you. We have a ton of options here so I don't mind it at all.

geneds are a bitch but they give you a much broader perspective on the world. and dont bitch about foreign languages...in other countries they require people to be fluent in two or three languages. i actually figured out what i wanted to do after taking the gen ed poly sci class. also, if by any chance you want to go into say the peace corps...they make sure you have a well rounded college education...hence why jmu has so many graduates in the peace corps because of how extensive the gen ed system is.
