MTV (www.mtv.com) and VH1 (www.vh1.com) have laid off nearly 100 employees just in time for the holidays. Hollywood Reporter reports: "Viacom's MTV Networks has laid off close to 100 employees, with the cuts affecting multiple divisions and staffers at all levels of the company, sources said"

Hey.......thats horrible that Companies actually do shit like this to people. Especially during the holidays. Sorry MTV,MTV2,MTV Europe...maybe if you play fucking music instead of gay tv shows like Lagunna beach, ect, ect, ect, and play music people will watch your channel and you won't have to fire people.....Dance Fucking Dance!

while i feel terrible for the people who lost their jobs, if this means that mtv is in bad shape, then consider me overjoyed. the sooner that dinosaur dies, the better. probably just a side effect of the recent viacom split and eliminating redundancies though, but we can hope.

How can any of you people bash mtv and say things like "its a blessing in a disguise" or "if they just played music videos instead of shows like laguna beach"??? Shows like Laguna, Real World, etc... bring in things called "Advertisements"... I mean how much money does a Relient K video actually bring to MTV??? MTV has all these shows because they bring in viewers...

Honestly, what the hell are you tlaking about. They are a international television buisness, not some small rock radio station. So liek any good buisness they want to make money. Whether that be by playing A. Bad Music B. Bad Shows. c. Firing people they dont need, it's all fine with me since you dont have to watch them. You can simply go to Fuse.

I wish I got fuse in my area. I had it all through college but now im stuck with mtv2 which I rarely watch anyway. As for MTV I thought it was still doing good for the most part. I personally hate all the shows but there are a lot of people who live for shows like Laguna beach and the other shit that channel plays. I know I dont hear much about TRL anymore. I also dont know any of the vjs it isnt the same since carson left.

i can say it because there's better companies to work for than some media conglomerate. the only thing that sucks behind all of this is that people lost their jobs, and at one of the worst times of the year. i personally don't care if mtv plays music videos, teenage drama, 70s porn, or jason tate panhandling in a chicken suit, i don't watch it.

and thank you for bringing to light how advertisements/channel ratings work. i never knew that tv stations intentionally aired shows and commercials that were aimed at a certain demographic and played to the tastes of said folk. thank you for your informative insight.

that's why i said "as long as they find new jobs quickly." and it's a blessing in disguise because i view media conglomerate's as evil empires that bastardize intelligence and independent thought in this country. so by being fired, they will be forced to seek employment at a better company. i don't wish anybody to ever lose their job. i'm more than well aware of the job search process, but the fact is, if they were working for mtv, they probably already have a respectable resume and shouldn't be terribly hard-pressed to find new employment.

I am sorry to the 100 people or so that were fired. Most likely at least 20 will find jobs quickly in the music industry or will branch out to make other companies because that is how it usually works. About 10 will probably be out of a job for a month or more and than the rest will be able to find jobs instantly through connections. I really hate companies that do that especially during the holidays. It shows how bad companies are these days. They want to lay off people to prepare for a fresh 2006. Oh well, here is a happiness that I didn't go work for Viacom. Also look for major layoff at the major labels in 2006. I think 2 of the biggies are gonna combine. Who do you think they are?

What is funny about MTV is that they have an insane amount of people who work for them for free.

This is being done because Viacom is splitting up into two companies on Dec. 31. MTV is part of the "aggressive, fast growth" portfolio and needs to shed as much as it can on it's books. New Viacom will be leverging like hell for it's growth, and needs to look as good as it can to the accountants.

The bad news is that they didn't fire any of the Jocks or Programmers. Good news is Beavis and Butt Head still have a job. But miraculously Kurt Loder is still on the payroll. Amazing.
