I've been laid off for almost six months now. The job search is beginning to get scary. With an Industrial Engineering Degree, I felt like finding a new job would be a cakewalk. Well, that isn't the case.

Anyone else having this type of issue? Do you see the job market turning around? Any advice for an unemployed college grad at age 23?

I'm graduating in 3 weeks. Needless to say, I'm a little scared.

go find your nearest call center, apply, work there. They're almost always hiring and if you're in a bind then it will atleast help you out until you find that career job that you're looking for.

What about checking some of the online websites? Like Monster.ca and such. That might help.

If it works for you, it can work for others too.

Temp agencies, monster and other online sites similar to that. See if your previous school has an online recruiting site. And then talk to your networks. I graduate next week, and haven't been looking as much as I should be. Hoping there's something out there.

Yea, its a management job. It entails cutting costs and improving current processes at a plant setting. Many folks compare it to a glorified accountant.

Monster.com, careerbuilder, linkedin... all that stuff is hit or miss. I've gotten plenty of interviews, but in this economy, people with 3+ years of experience are taking entry level jobs. I've gotten beat out twice by people with more experience. I thought I had the upper hand when it says I have nine months experience on my resume.

Sounds like a solid plan... Hopefully the females are willing to tip well in this recession. I guess drug addicts are always in the buyers market, so that is a booming industry.

Tomorrow's my last day at my internship. The best they could do was offer me some contracted work. Lame. I need something full time.

That's rough. Most engineering job's unemployment rates are rising. Very scary for me.

What type of engineering are you in? I'm looking into the government now for a job. With this stimulus, they are giving out signing bonuses to new hires and such. I have a legit lead on a company in Maryland by the chesapeake bay.

Stay away from private companies right now. My recent employer is private so they dont have to release numbers to the public. Let's just say, they arent doing hot and having continuous layoffs from the bottom down.

I'm going for Mechanical. I got 3 more years for this to improve, but still not what I like to see.

Yea, good choice. There are still many opportunities for Processing Engineers which are primarily mechanical engineers. Hopefully there is something that shows a glimmer of hope soon, cause all of my colleagues (i finally got to use that word) feel like they are walking on eggshells after what happened to me. So, its either get lucky and try another job or go back for my masters degree.

I just saw an Asher Roth video on MTV and I'm seriously considering being a rapper. Like full-time. Last Wednesday was karaoke night and I did an Eminem song and was spot-on. I even had my own hype-man. Look, if he can do it....

Start looking into government agencies, you may have to get out of your specified field but you should be able to get a job with your experience. Plus you can't beat the job security, health benefits and retirement plan.

You could sit on the corner and ask for a dollar all day. Who knows, you might get $50 a day.

orrrrr, you could stand and offer people to hit you for $10 a punch.

Yeah, it's supposed to be super easy to get in at the ground floor of the tech field but i have more or less been striking out for a while.

Now I'm looking into USCG pilot programs.

If you're getting interviews and not getting jobs its a personal problem. Getting in the door means they think you're qualified, then its on you to prove it.

It's hard to get summer jobs usually geared towards high school/college kids because so many unemployed adults are filling them up.

The no people skills thing explains why you were an engineering major.

Yea, thats the reason.

It wasn't because I excelled in Calculus and Physics when I was in high school. It was because I was some asshole who stayed inside throughout high school and had no interaction with my peers.

HAHA

Just playing. I do have people skills, and have a good personality. If you knew anything about the job market right now, you'd know that competition for jobs is ridiculous. I have a legit shot working for a government contractor in Maryland. Just got confirmation on that today. Just have to wait for security clearance through the government.

What leads you to the conclusion I know nothing about the job market? I'm in a market getting hit harder than most.

Also, I was kidding about the engineering thing, my wife lived on an engineering floor in college and dudes were awkward as fuck.

yea, i know what you mean. They are real awkward. The engineering students get a bad rep. At WVU, it was mostly the electrical and chemical engineers.

What market are you currently in?
