The Boston Globe's Gordon Edes is reporting that centerfielder Johnny Damon has agreed to a 4-year, $52 million contract with the Yankees. The agreement is contingent on Damon passing a physical.

fucking shit. Johnny Damon was my hero in 2004. When I look at him, I see a guy who's partially responsible for bringing down the yankees once and for all and finally ending the curse of the babe. And now he's going to join the evil empire? Fuck. He's like Anakin Skywalker.

Um, didn't boston say Clemens was in the twilight of his career? So isn't it they're fault he left Boston (I could be wrong. i hate the red sox and the yankees, so I don't pay too much attention to them). Besides, quit beating those old horses to death. I mean, who knew Clemens would have what? another hall of fame worthy decade left in him after leaving boston?
yeah seriously are yank fans going to love him now?
Um, are you retarded? yes, yankee fans will suck off anything in pin stripes.
besides, what's the big deal. it's call free agency? are they NOT supposed to take the best monetary deal? this isn't 1950 when players only moved because of trades. Get over it.

I'm interested to see how the Yanks embrace Johnny-Cake. Whoever posted sell-out couldn't be more correct. I really thought Damon was the face of the Boston organization; I know Ramirez and Ortiz are better players, but it just seems weird. It would almost be like Jeter going to the BoSox.

Clemens was in the twilight of his career when he left boston. He was overweight and out of shaped and pitched like he didnt give a shit. Once he signed with Toronto he changed his workout plan and hired a personal trainer.
And fuck you Johnny Damon. Dont say that youd gladly accept less money to stay in boston and then go sign to the highest bidder. You now have red sox nation hating you, and the majority of yankees fans already hate you.

But Jeter has been a Yankee his entire career...Damon did some damage to the Yanks, but he's not completely "Boston." Clemens? same kind of thing.
Regardless, I don't know what to think quite yet. Right now, no embracing this move.

If Damon really had the respect for the Fenway faithful he loved so much, he would have at least extended the contract to an additional year that the sox wouldn't offer. This just shows that in a "The Team I Want to Play for in '06" vs "Another $12m" , the extra $12 is far more important to him. I'm glad he'll be spending most of that additional money on razors.

to me, this is the most blatant betrayal of sox fans in our lifetime. he turned down 40 MILLION dollars from his team and took just 12 million more to go to their biggest rival.
if damon signed the same 52 million deal with los angeles ...or anaheim ..or ANY other team ...fans would be disappointed with him and outraged at the organization. but to go to a team you overcame in such dramatic fashion on your way to one of the biggest feats in baseball history, a team that has been a nemesis for generations, is nothing short of betrayal. there is no sympathy or understanding. he turned down 40 million dollars to make just 12 more with the enemy. he's a traitor and i hope nothing but the worst for him for the rest of his baseball career.
quotes like this have only made it worse .. “My message to Red Sox fans is I tried, I tried everything in my power to try to come back."
Don't say you tried after you turned down 40 million dollars. It's absolutely a bunch of crap.

Buster Olney has no clue. Shifts the power in the east? Damon is .800 OPS guy who is declining. This is like the Pedro deal. He will be good in 06, but after that, all bets are off. The yankees pitching staff is suspect and their players are getting old with long contracts. I'll give them 06, but the Sox are building for 07, 08 and beyond.
so long Damon, thanks for your services, now start sucking.

It must be tougher to be a yankees fan. Think about it, season after season you're taught to hate these guys with a passion and then when they become free agents they join the team. Its like your worst enemy is all of a sudden your best friend. But he is a piece of shit for going back on his word. I can't wait to see how messed up he looks without his locks and beard. Free agency overall is so messed up this year. Tell me how a pitcher with a career sub-.500 record (Burnett) and a guy who's been a closer for two years (Ryan) get a combined $100 million plus contracts? Just wait til next year when Zito is a free agent, he should get $30 million a year, probably from the Yanks.

I can't believe you guys are still debating this. BASEBALL IS 90% DRAMA. Especially the AL East. Like you didn't think this, or something like it, was coming?? If it weren't Damon it'd be somebody else to stir up the pot, and make us constantly debate it in the offseason. It's all about press coverage.

They have more to spend because they've built their legacy. MLB was created without a salary cap. Natrually, one team was going to fall into this position. Teams don't need a 200 million dollar payroll, but if you fucking make that money then you're going to spend it. I'd take a cap anyday, but that's not how it is right now. Therefore, EVERY TEAM TRIES TO BUY THEIR CHAMPIONSHIPS.

this is why i think the NFL is more competitive because there a salary cap to even out the playing field. I just don't like the fact that their payroll is over 200 million and then you have the Tigers who just can't compete with that. I don't care if you have the money or not, but when you go out and outbid all the other teams in order to get players then other teams have no chance.

Yankees trying to buy another championship. They just throw their money at the big names, overpay for them, and hope it works out. Why do they even have scouts, they never use them. No other team was offering Damon more than 4/40 ( or an average of 10 million a year), the yankees offer 4/52 ( or 13 million a year). Im glad the sox didnt overpay for him. The yankees are gonna be spending a lot of money for a declining CF in about 1-1.5 years.

Go read some of my other posts in other red sox related threads, and baseball in general before making assumptions. I back up pretty much every one of my posts with facts and know what im talking about. I'd figure that by saying "yankees suck," when they obvioulsy have a loaded line-up, people would have the insight to realize that alls i mean is that i hate them.
Boston should hurry up and trade arroyo/clement to the mariners for Jeremy Reed and then we can forget about Damon. I think In 1-1.5 years, Reed has potential to be as good or better than Damon. Damon will likely decline in defense and offense over the next 1-1.5 years, and Reed should get better. He's cheaper than Damon and can actually reach second base on a throw without need for a cutoff man.

Im pretty sure that Boston has been 2nd to the Yankees in payroll. But the difference between the payrolls is still around $70 million. Yankees have the largest payroll by far. It has allowed them to sign A-rod (red sox refused to go over their budget) and now it allowed them to overpay Damon and give him $13 million a year, and by most accounts he isnt worth more than $10 million a year.
Yankees payroll -$213.1 million, ave player salary about 7.4 million
Boston payroll - $141.9 million, ave player salary about 4.2 million
Note on the ave player salary, the difference between the Yankees and Red Sox ( 1st and 2nd) is about the same as the difference between Boston and Kansas City ( 2nd and 27th)

do you reallize this is a thread about the redsox, not about hating on them and the rest of rs nation
i have nothing against yankee's fans, i'm friends with many of them, but most of the time, it's them who are the ignorant pricks because of their massive collection of rings. The ignorant pricks are the rappers who dawn the NY hats just because they've won so many times (although, they are not usually real fans)

haha if we had a 9th hitter then it would be listed. as of now ill put bernie if youd like. and cano doesnt belong? he had a pretty impressive rookie season. and playing under arod and jeter, hes going to improve. but no, you hate the yankees, so they suck. so sayeth the shithead
Note on the ave player salary, the difference between the Yankees and Red Sox ( 1st and 2nd) is about the same as the difference between Boston and Kansas City ( 2nd and 27th)
i dont know why everyone keeps saying the yankees are overpaying damon. hes getting 3 mil more then he would with the sox, and his stats are worth it. and to the yankees, putting a 316 hitter in the lead off spot in front of the evil empire seems worth it. opinions anyone?

haha its their lineup chief...how can you say that lineup sucks? honestly. you put a 316 hitter at the top, one of the best leadoff hitters in the game....in front of jeter, arod, and sheff.....tell me they suck when they score 6 runs a game
a .316 avg, or .353 obp? A lead off hitter should have a high obp, it matters more than a high avg. Im not saying your wrong, but his obp should be what you weigh in this situation.

4/40 is still over paying. Last year he declined (and even in 04) in the latter half of the season. He is a career .785 ish OPS guy. Basically, the yanks are going to get one good year of Damon, maybe two, but he will decline playing in CF the next four years. This deal is not going to look good after a couple years when Damon resorts back to average. Although, with the yankees money, it probably wont hurt as much.
first off...baseball sucks all together.
Dont post anymore. Boston fans are some of the best there is. Some of the best baseball discussions on this board are from Red Sox fans. And here is a clue, our payroll is going to be cut this year. It will be cut in 07 as well, but we will still be a competing team. Why? Because our FO is smart. We have talent in the farm and talent through trade (Beckett and Reed if it happens).
Also, I wouldn't call Varitek, Millar, Bellhorn/graff, Mueller, Nixon, Damon (before his rock star days), Arroyo, Wakefield, Lowe (when he was here), etc. big stars. Blue collar? maybe, maybe not, but certainly not big stars. Millar was going to Japan, and Mueller was an after thought for teams.

Since bernie has accepted a one year deal, Its safe to say he will be in the line-up. He can still contribute.
thats all speculation. plus not only are you getting a 353 career obp in your lead off position, by acquiring damon you place your division rival in a huge hole. also i think the yankees are going to pick up another 1st baseman or will put someone else in dh. it would be silly not to, he could be their worst hitter in the lineup. maybe theyll put sierra in as a big bat.

apparently it was Damon's wife that pushed him to go to the yankees because she wanted more money.
I'd smack that bitch upside her head if she pushed me to do that. Unless she gave him sex everyday, then it'd be a win-win situation. If I was Damon, I'd say "..to make up for me being a liar and a jackass, I'm donating my locks to Fenway so the fans can remember the good days. Just know I'm not doing this because of me."
id say, "hey bitch, why dont you go knit me a sweater, or get your ass back in the kitchen." - eric cartman

I could provide evidence if you would like....
Why would you want Sierra as a big bat? So he can post another .760 OPS? Do they even need a big bat with that line-up? Run away from Sierra, run far away. He is old and has only posted an .800 OPS three times in his 19 year career.
better bat than bernie is the point

Cano does not belong with them. He's had one season and seemed to play over his head. I;m not sold on him as being a great everyday player. If he continues to improve upon his rookie season then i'll have no problem admitting to it and that he should be mentioned along with those other names. He needs to work on his plate discipline, only 16 walks, and increase his obp.

williams - .249 .321 .367
sierra - .229 .265 .371
In that lineup, Williams better average and obp is much more valuable than Sierra's slightly better slg %

Not at all. Bernie can still play in the field and has a career .480 slg. his drop off in slg last year could be because he was getting older and wearing his body down in the field. Stick him in a DH role and watch his slg rise again. Sierra is old and out dated. Bernie has time left.
