View Full Version : define "selling out"
is it when a band changes cause their record company tells them to or is it when a band cares more about themselves than the music or is it just going on MTV?
serously im curious everyone gets all crazy when a band shows up on MTV or changes their sound to a little more poppy or little more hardcore or whatever...
what does it matter to you the bands work hard for what they get and if you dont like that i dont see why youd have to whine about how "you see a little teeny bopper" at a show or something....
to me selling out is when a band refuse to meet with the fans or sign an autograph or somethin like that..
yeah i no someones gona be like "y do we always have to bring up stuff about sell outs yadda yadda" im not calling anyone sell out or anything im just wonderin why everyone cares so much.

when a band sells out, it's like a big "fuck you" to their fans. their style usually changes (for the worse) when a band sells out.

in instances when the band intends to "sell out" from the start and are in the band for monetary causes from the start, they didn't sell out because they were never were a part of anything to sell out from, they would just be considerred buisnessmen rather than artists or musicians.

You can't decide if you get on the radio. If they want to play you, by law they can. Hence NOFX making a note of it in the CD art. Hoping to detur them.
Selling out is when you talk a good game at one thing, and do a total 180, contradicting yourself only to gain a little more.

well two years ago they were somewhat underground, but they are trying to sell their "punk" image

Its not always about money. Some do a 180 to get on a certain label, or to gain popularity. AFI did that early on with the "hardcore" rhetoric was the trend at the time. So after they had swindled up enough support, they can move up to a major as they always planned and turn into Queensriech. Though not before Hot Topic were selling dolls on the members, and have them model some punk-gear on the website. Say.. weren't the Cro-Mags gonna have dolls made for the reunion..? Though i saw it on Buddybitch.com

My whole deal with "selling out" is when people say they changed their sound to make money. That's bullshit, what if they changed their sound for the sake of changing their sound? Why aren't they allowed to try new things?

agreed. the changing sound argument needs proof that a band specifically altered their image/sound with the intention of getting more fame and money. It's more about pushing aside who they really are as artists and adopting a new sound/image to cater to the "mainstream vision."

but incubus didn't really sell out. they ventured a little into commercial territory with make yourself, but since then they gradually started to mold and experiment with their sound into the one they have now

Hmm.. i saw them a few times opening for bands at clubs in L.A. going back to when they were the Shrinky Dinks. I would never say they were ever a punk band, and that's fine. They were a commercial band that just hadn't hit yet. Then they did. I don't disrespect them , or Incubus or Green Day or other bands that werent lying to they're following in hopes to move up. It's not an unknown thing to happen.
Be who you are, not bullshit your audience selling them the myth of something else. I only pointed out AFI because they are the perfect example of that. Preaching about a scene, hardcore unity and other fairy-tales. Hence there are not many fans from ten years ago that still like them now. They figured out they'd been had. Also yes, bands can change styles without doing that. The Clash seemed to be just as great playing whatever they liked.

When a band or artist change their style of music, lyrics or the way they look simply to gain more money. There's nothing wrong with changing and evolving as time goes on, but there some cases when you can tell it has been done for an obvious reason.

agreed. same with simple plan. sure, they suck..but that doesn't mean they're sell outs. they were always on huge tours from the start and always had good marketing.
if your record label is good at marketing you, it doesn't make you a sell out.
if you go on mtv, you aren't a sell out.
when you sign to a major label, it's not being a sell out.
everyone wants to make money, it's just how you go about it.
people use that term to describe any band that isn't hard enough or cool enough for them.
but i agree that it's not caring about the fans and being a complete asshole, not making decisions about the music but looking for the dollars instead.
