View Full Version : Asher Roth at PSU

I first saw this punk on MTV. I thought the soundbite of him rapping was a joke. I asked my friends why he was famous and on TV....and well, it just got silent for a few seconds and someone said 'he's a rapper'. me-'but he's white, and he's terrible.' Are we at a point now where rap can be manufactured and marketed to white high school students so effectively? shit's offensive. Yeah, I like to black out and play 'hide the finger' with drunk bitches here at college, but I don't need asher roth's insight on these matters.

so yeah, he came to psu last night. The closer I got to the noise, the more douchebags I ran into, thus making me feel more and more like a douche myself. I couldn't explain why exactly. Why should I feel bad about going to a free show? ....Morals?

So as I walk in, the thing ends and floods of strange looking people come walking out. I pretend i'm on my cellphone for about a minute, then walk away with the stream of people.

rap is fucked. the end.

I like it. Catchy but not in that annoying neo-techno way. It sounds like a lot of the music I grew up listening to.

yeah that guy is a pathetic sorry excuse for music. We are indeed at that point when music like that is actually selling because MTV said so. MTV is a powerful source for music popularity and they choose this guy?? i mean c'mon.

Dude. Asher is actually pretty good. So many people classify him by what he looks like or I Love College. He has so many better songs than I Love College. Who says that a white guy can't do rap just because of his skin color? You're classifying a rapper as bad because some white people like him? That's completely racist, and honestly you just sound like a huge asshole.

And by saying that you don't like the people at the show and make that a reason that the MUSIC is bad.

By the way, I am a Penn State student and I really enjoyed the show with my friends. Sure he's not the best rapper in the world, but he isn't bad. You're trying to classify him based on the color of his skin, that's not cool. That's like saying "This band isn't good AND THERE'S A BLACK GUY IN IT." What does that even MATTER? I thought it was a good show, and he was pretty good. Get past the whole "I dont like his college song." I'm sure you heard his rap thing with no backup where he discussed a TON of issues facing the public including health, obesity, child obesity, why we should eat organic foods, and all that stuff. I'm sure you heard the part where he was serious.

And since you're making such an opinion, I'm sure you heard more of his songs than just clips on MTV.

By the way, I'm sure that there were tons of strange people. Because EVERYONE that goes to see him looks strange. I didn't see many strange looking people, and again, the way someone looks is no way to classify someone.

He isn't a bad rapper at all, and he puts on a fun show. Go back and curl up in your little dorm room. I really would think a Penn State student would be able to hear "I Love College" and relate to it. Unless of course you live in a hole.

good rebuttal man. didn't have to call me an asshole or a racist though. the fuck do you know about race? Rap is a black man's genre. they have more rhythm and style, it's science. You're making it sound like white's have to break barriers to be accepted in the rap game. Maybe that's true, but don't you think it's for a good reason? Can you see that?

By strange I just meant a lot of polo's and Axe Hair Gel. I guess I was really just commenting on the section of people I ran into on their way out of the show. not the entire audience. But how is it that so many people trust a kid who blew up instantly? The college demographic is reallll juicy. mmm

and oh, it's a song you RELATE to! I should too, right? or else I'm a hyper nerd?

When I myself (perhaps even you, Van Wilder) could write each line of his 'rap', what makes you think I would have any interest in listening to him past a couple songs?

...and I live in a house, with a backyard, 2 other people. it's kind of nice.

...and I live in a house, with a backyard, 2 other people. it's kind of nice.

Like I feel like i can relate to a lot of the song, even though I don't get drunk every night or whatever and some of that stuff I dont even do. But I see how other people are, and I fee lik eit can be a n accurate description.

Anyways, it just sounded like you were saying "white people can't rap. Only black people can, or it's not legit." I hate when people say that because it just doesn;t sound right. If you're white and can rap, do it. If you're black, do it. It doesnt matter what color your skin is just because most are black. But if you didn't mean it in that way, I'm sorry. I just will challenge you to not base rap based off of a skin color.

Ill admit most people there were there to see I Love College, that's pretty obvious. And I feel as though his fans may have that sort of polo/ hair gel appearance and whatever. But most of my favorite bands bring in 14 year old girls, i don't make any opinions on the band based off those fans. Personally, I have listened to his other stuff, and honestly I feel as though "I Love College" is a pretty catchy song that people can relate to, but most of his other songs are tons better and have much better lyrics. I mean, the guy can do pretty good lyrics if you care enough to go beyond I Love College. I'm no "Van Wilder" in ANY way whatsoever, and I would never EVER even consider being in a frat, I actually really don't like frat parties. I just can relate to many of the lines just through my experiences from being in the occasional frat parties and even just hanging with my friends. I mean, there's other songs on there that may be kinda like that, but I feel its all in good fun and in a carefree spirit. Other songs have pretty solid lyrics, and he can actually rap decently. I don't know if you saw the freestyle one, but that was pretty respectable. As I said above, he freestyled on problems that are occurring right now.

I'll say listen to his whole CD, theres some pretty cool lines in Lark On My Go Kart, but I can see how many wouldn't like it. Blunt Crusin is a lot like I Love College, but tons of other songs (As I Em for example, which is about how so many people are comparing him to Eminem and he just wants to make his own name) have some pretty good lyrics.

I'm not a huge fan of rap, but I enjoy the CD personally. I didn't go see him because of the fame, I went to see him because I enjoy some of his stuff.

Do you realize what's going on in Africa right now? It's just like, you guys are disgusting. Talking about billions and billions of dollars you have. They aren't the only kind of people, but it's a pretty accurate description of college parties, unless you want to sit in your dorm all night you're going to run into it. Its just a light song and it's fun.

And there are no "philosophical views" on the world. It's just a fun college song. I don't get why everyone is trying to make it more than that. I mean, COME ON, philosophical views of life? It's a song about college parties, and it does a DAMN good job of describing that.

It's actually a parody of the "Don't Vote" Voting PSAs, he used clips from that and put his own clips and made that video. I really doubt Tom Cruise and Steve Speilberg are "endorsing" Asher.

First off, "I Love College" is not a good song. It is over-played. In fact, most of the songs off Asleep in a Bread Aisle are not that good. There's a couple of jewels (Fallin, La Di Da, and yes I like the track Be By Myself) but most of the album is not that great. THAT BEING SAID, go listen to his mixtape "Greenhouse Effect" before you doubt Asher and his talent. Some of his verses over some of these beats are incredible. His "Cannon" "dey know" verses come to mind. I have been on this site mad times before defendin Ash and it still sucks that people associate Ash with one particular image from I Love College. Google "The greenhouse effect". its a free mixtape you can get it off datpiff. listen to some of those tracks and then come back and talk. if you still feel the same way, then whatever. its just me havin a different opinion of what is good hiphop. and that goes out to anyone, not just homeboy im quoting right now.

thats exactly the point
im judging his entire existence based on one song about college
like he assumes all BLACK rappers just care about money and inturn (who needs real proof of this when you can just assume it right?) are unaware of troubles in Africa

and unlike everyone else on here im not just saying college isnt like that
if it is that is pretty sad and shallow
but its likely especially if you say it is

here is my all real opinion on him after listening to his album on Lala
No flow
His lyrics are very bland
beats are perfectly fine

so my opinion on him
no talent, fad that will pass

Obviously not all parts of college are like that, just the party aspect. That's what the song is describing, and if that's not obvious then.... yea.

Anyways, I think a lot of his lyrics are pretty clever and all. Sure, he's not the best but I enjoy the album. And he didn't claim all black rappers are just like that, he was describing a trend, and you can't really deny that that's pretty true.

You havn't heard of the trend of rappers singing about how much money they have and how frivolous they spend it? Are you serious right now?

And it didn't sound like that to me he said "There's all these rappers" not "All black rappers."

You're doing the stereotyping.

"All these black rappers? African rappers?"
there you go dude
and its not a trend of talking about money
its how he is making a connection between that and ignoring African problems
it is an extremely insulting and poorly thought out statement/generalization
