The Status - So This Is Progress
Record Label: Doghouse
Release Date: October 7, 2008

Let me start off by saying that if you're a fan of today's pop-punk, you will probably like this album. I find it to be quite the breath of fresh air, actually. STIP is a fun, summer album released back in October of last year, and it was heavily overlooked. Not that I blame anyone- with so many pop-punk bands coming out, how does one set itself apart from the rest? By being original and different.

Right there is the album's problem, though. While I admit the vocals are great, and they can play their instruments (adding hooks to avoid using only power chords), the band doesn't have too much of an identity yet. However, there is definately a lot of potential here, progress that can be made if you will (pun intended). The album starts off with "Get Back on Your Feet", a great song for showcasing what the band can do. The song that follows, though, is "Where the Heart Is". I found that the chorus (So tell me where the heart is/Tell me that you need this/Tell me that you want it so badly it hurts) is amazingly catchy, and the song overall is a high point of the album. The title track is, in my opinion, the high point of the album. It has the catchiest chorus on the entire album, with nice "ahhh"s harmonizing prefectly, and a guest vocalist for the second verse- none other than Anthony Raneri of Bayside. Adam Lazarra of Taking Back Sunday also provides backing vocals on the track. "The Wake of What's Been Done" sounds like it came off of an album by The Audition, and that's a good thing in this case.

A sucker for slow, ballad-esque songs, I was surprised to find that those types of songs are where the band actually falters. "If There's Love" is one of those songs, and it just didn't click with me. However, the closer ("I Was Sinking") they do a much better job with.

Overall, how is it? Like I said, if you're a fan of pop-punk, go out and buy this now. It's definitely a strong debut from a promising new band, and it's worth the money.

I checked this release out back when it was being hyped in October. I wasn't really blown away by it so I just bought Rise Against Appeal To Reason. "Perfect Day" is a pretty good song though. Your review makes me want to take another listen.

That's how I felt. It's good, but doesn't last very long.

I haven't listened to this album but judging by their Myspace songs, it's something that I'll spin for days on end and then forget about. There are plenty more pop/punk albums and bands that do it so much better. I loved the review though. It was so very well written

I think that The Status is AMAZING, and I love every song. I've seen them live 3 times, and they are absolutely AWESOME live. They have great stage presence, and it's completely infectious. They're the CD I pop in when I'm in a bad mood, and I NEVER get tired of them. I could listen to this record over and over again. They're awesome guys, awesome musicians, and I give this album like, 14 thumbs up =)

I'm quite enamored with this album. I think the review was well written, however, you forgot to mention the air of confidence that is obvious throughout the album. Most pop-punk is lacking that.

the status happens to be one of my favorite bands of all time. They're down to earth, nice, and extremely hardworking and love what they do. I'll always be a fan!:-)

I love these guys and I think this cd is incredible. I picked this cd up when it came out in october and I personally think it is one of the better cds of 2008. The lead vocals done by Ben Grant are incredible and I possibly can't think of anything negative about this album. The two 'guest vocals' are damn incredible too which would be Anthony Raneri and Adam Lazzara[spelling?]

It is a cd i constantly play on my ipod and it never gets old. for those of you who don't know these guys or haven't checked them out please do. they are an amazing group of guys who are very talented.

Ok first off, the 'guest vocalist' happens to be Anthony Raneri from Bayside, their manager. And what about the Adam Lazzara guest vocal spot? They really shouldn't let people write reviews who do not do their research. This is one of the hardest touring/working bands that I have had the pleasure to hang out with and their cd is just the surface of their talent not only as individuals but as a collective band.

I recieved a download for the advance with no information on who the guest vocalists are. Thanks for telling me who though.

These guys will only continue to progress musically and people will be laughing at reviews like this.
Did you read the same review I wrote? Because I'm fairly certain I said that they would continue to progress (I even made a pun) and I gave it a positive review. They shouldn't let people like you comment who don't even read the review properly.

I'm loving the new album :)
It keeps me on my toes for another album to come out.
The sound is totally aggro, and on a side note....
It sounds great in my car :))

Ignore that kind of bullshit mate, people talk a lot of shite on here, nicely written review. I've yet to give this album a listen but will do so now!

I really really REALLY wanted to love this, since it came out on Doghouse, but I just couldn't get into it. I'm going to give it another shot now though.

I absolutely love these guys! I live about 30 minutes away from them, so I've had plenty of opportunities to see them live. They definitely give a great show, and if you haven't seen them, you really need to. They're the nicest guys.

People care too much about the score. They should worry more about what the review actually says. I've noticed it in your reviews as well.

Not in my opinion. I've been listening to Appeal To Reason consistently since October, but I streamed about half the songs off of this album again, and I still don't understand the hype. There's nothing really bad about this band more just, nothing that makes them standout.

I agree. And I'm referring to the local fans coming out of the woodwork to support a release.

I like this band, but how is the user rating at 100%? Nice album, a good debut, but no way it's that good.

Good review; pretty spot-on evaluation.
