How do you guys feels about bands putting cover songs in their live sets at shows?
Personally I hate it.
I can listen to Punk Goes Pop at home
If I paid to get into a show, I'd rather hear the bands play their own original material

if they do it good, and not as a cute little joke then it's alright i think. i would love to hear a band like fall out boy cover basket case or other classic songs like that (i say that because i saw it on youtube). i think it's retarded that they waste their time on the cover of beat it tho. fuck that.

basically, if it fits and they do the cover justice then its cool.

I am usually against it because I would rather hear the band's own songs. i would much rather hear Thrice play one of their own songs instead of Helter Skelter. I was pretty disappointed with New Found Glory playing Kiss Me instead of Dig My Own Grave or At Least I'm Known For Something.

Covers are my favorite.
I don't like it when it's expected, like when bands play Punk Goes... songs that I've already heard.

If it's something they've released then I don't mind otherwise I find it annoying. And if I have to hear another shitty pop punk band cover I Wanna Be Sedated.....I heard it 3 times in the span of a month once.

I love covers. Especially if it's a band I've never seen. It draws me in, shows me who they wanna be for a day. Says a lot about them. Are they trying to be ironic or is this legitimate? etc etc.

All of Hoodwink the other night was amazing. Anti Flag covering the Clash. NFG covering Green Day.
Some of my other favorites include Kevin Devine covering "Jesus Christ" by Brand New, Ludo covering "Epic" although I've seen them do that too many times now..., Reggie & The Full Effect covering "Raining Blood" by Slayer is always a favorite..., Linkin Park covering "Wish" by Nine Inch Nails was surprisingly awesome, Green Day covering "Knowledge" by Operation Ivy...I don't know I've seen a lot of good covers. Those are all just off the top of my head.

Yeah I've never had a chance to see a band do a serious cover. All I've gotten is the Punk Goes stuff, which I do enjoy, but would rather have the bands keep those as recordings.

Oh well, hopefully you do. Those Punk Goes...comps are more awful with each one they come out with. There are a few gems in there. I dug the Gym Class Heroes cover of Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I wouldnt mind seeing that live but I don't plan on going to any GCH shows anytime soon. Although when I did see them at Warped they covered Lamb of God...awkward.

I agree, the compilations have become a huge gimmick for the most part

What bands are you talking about? I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you're probably seeing shitty bands, but prove me wrong.

I've seen some great covers over the years.. I love live covers. I couldn't even begin to list them all here, it's well over a hundred.

Thursday covering Buzzcocks was genuinely awesome; Paramore's Sunny Day Real Estate cover was incredible; Jack's Mannequin did a great take on Bruce Springsteen; the list goes on.

I enjoy seeing bands playing cover songs, especially if its by an artists who has past and i'd never get the opportunity to hear the original artist play it.

My favorite cover I witnessed live would have to be Dustin Kensrue covering Bob Dylan's Masters of War.

I've seen some great covers, and I've seen some terrible covers. It really just depends on the situation.

Scenario A. I go to AP Tour solely to see Hit the Lights. I have to stick around with my friends and watch the rest of the bands, since my friends drove. The Maine plays their cover of "I Wanna Love You". I'd personally rather hear them play that than the any of their shitty songs, since it's a song that I actually do like and can sing along to.

Scenario B. I went to the Bamboozle Roadshow, and We the Kings played a cover of "The Middle" by JEW. It was done very well in my opinion, so I loved it. They also "covered" "A Milli" by Lil' Wayne. That was pointless and I saw it as them just trying to kill time because they don't have enough songs to fill a headlining spot at a show.

Scenario C. I'm going to see New Found Glory tonight. I've read through the setlist thread for the tour, and I see that they've been playing their cover of "Don't You Forget About Me". That kind of upsets me because New Found Glory are my favorite band, and I would, personally, rather hear them play their own material rather than cover songs.

It all just depends on the band, the cover, and the scenario. I love it when bands like Rancid play "Knowledge" by Op Ivy or when Angels and Airwaves used to do "There Is" and "Reckless Abandon". It gets annoying sometimes though when A Day to Remember plays "Since U Been Gone" all the time.

I think they can be a lot of fun. I just don't like them as show closers. Like Manchester covering Paul Simon is cool. Just not as their final song. At least not to me. I would much rather hear one of their songs.

But like a friend reminded me, the encore is like an extra present for the audience on top of the actual setlist. So looking at it like that they can do whatever they want, I would just prefer that they don't close with a cover.

a good example of a cover i hate.
Still Fly, I seriously didn't want to hear them play that.

But i mean, when it's something unexpected or never done before, that's fine.

Or if it's well done.

Haha that's what made me wanna start this thread
I saw them and they played it, just like the last two times I saw them
I mean it's fun to listen to the recording, and the recording only

For the most part live covers have always changed up the set, most of them I have seen were all done well and half the crowd didn't even know what song it was. Prime examples:

-Streetlight Manifesto covering Hey by the Suicide Machines on two seperate occasions in Detroit. Sounded awesome with a full line of horns
-Set Your Goals covering Op Ivy's Jaded and STD's You Vandal, I dare say You Vandal got more energy out of the crowd than any song on their setlist
-I Am the Avalanche covering Weezer's Tired of Sex, totally not expecting it but sounded really good.

That said, some bands work covers into their sets always like RBF Take On Me and Goldfinger 99 Red Balloons and it just becomes another song, the flare of it being a cover just vanishes.
