don't use the word "geetar". That would be my advice. If I played guitar, I would help more, but alas, I am just a musically challenged man.

Well if tabs weren't illegal I'd recommend printing out some Blink 182 tabs and praticing simple chords with them.... but alas...

Hold on! Ultimate Guitar still works, here you go, look up some tabs of bands like Blink and Nirvana.

Agreed, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to find someone who can help you out in person.

Do you have any friends that play guitar?

Finding a teacher is really the best way to go. Just so the teacher can get you off the basics of holding the guitar and frettting, scales and chords.

When you get those down you can pretty much work on things yourself after that.

But yeah learn to read tab.

Yeah, you could even try getting a few lessons, if you don't have any friends who can help you out for free.

Local music stores usually offer lessons for like $10-$20 per week.

yea man, get lessons. you should learn from someone first, so u don't end up being one of those punkers who can't really play, but make millions of dollars pretending.

Learn a few scales to start off such as the minor pentatonic, im prety sure youll be able to find them on the net, the main chords are C,F,E,D,G,A (i think), they'll be on the net. Try learning some simple stuff to start off. "Dammit" by Blink-182 is good to learn for a novice, its pretty easy once you get the hang of it and its fun to play. Learn alternate picking as well, ive only just started a few months ago myself.

Im not majorly sure about lessons, they bore me, i started having them a few years aog, anbd they were boring as hell and i just never practised and quit.

I was self taught... I think I would have gotten lessons if anyone around me played guitar, but alas! And all the music stores are like in the middle of the city

Yeah i mean there's stuff you can't really learn yourself, ie work out tunings, so i just get friends to show me, i went over to a friends for like three or four days in a row in the christmas hoildays with my guitar, i learned how to tune a guitar into drop d (finally haha) and a few other things, but overall i didnt really learn loads, i was just there playing a few fifths whilst hes soloing away like the guy from btbam haha, but it was still good to finally actually play with someone

ive been playing bass for about a year and a half now. i started teaching myself for about 8 months. which was ok cos i had music classes ages ago in school which was cumpolsary. (i playing trumpet cos im a f***in loser) but ther wer bassists, and i remember almost everything the teacher said to the bassisst about his techniques. so when i got my bass i cut sick for a beginner cos i pretty much new already, and when i started lessons, i didnt do any work on my technique because i was fine with it. so what im getting at is, its up to you, if you want to be a tab reader and be pretty crap, u can still get by, but i STRONGLY recommend taking lessons if you want to be any good. whatever you decide to do, another piece of advice i can give you is to jam with friends, a lot. it is almost more help than any music teacher could offer. but still getting taught is better than not.
