Now that they're going to miss the playoffs, I think the ownership can make a legit case that Brees isn't the guy. I believe this was the talk going into the season, that they needed another playoff season to see how legit he is. While he may have been pretty good this year, he's not as good as he was last year, and you have to see that Gates and LT are what makes this guy look so good. LT's been hurt and struggling, and defenses have been taking away Gates lately, and Brees has struggled a lot at times. Rivers is going to be a starter someday in the NFL, but will it be in San Diego in 2006?

Getting rid of Rivers was going to come back and bite them in the ass. NOw we'll see how they handle the situation.

And I'd like to note that the Chargers had the ball 9 times today, and they went 3 and out four times in their biggest game of the year.
Has Rivers take any snaps this year? I'm not into football as I use to, but I can see management making Rivers the man for 2006. Though personally I'd stick with Brees, but thats me.

Honestly, I'd take my chances with Rivers. The guy was a stud coming out of college, and I think you need to see what you have there. He was drafted for a reason, and that was Brees sucking. Then he developed Gates vision and he put up big numbers. Now you take away Gates, and you see that old Brees that throws interceptions, fumbles the ball, and throws inaccurate passes.

I wonder if Phillip's mechanics have progressed or if they just left well enough alone. He had such an ugly throwing form but it worked.

agreed. Unless Rivers has shown them absolutely nothing in practice, he needs to start Week 17 and Brees needs to be out the door. Too much money invested in Rivers and way too much potential, especially with LT and Gates. Hopefully San Diego drafts some secondary help and picks up legit go-to-guy at WR, because they'll then be able to compete with anyone in the league on a consistent basis.

i think the team is way too good to put their hopes on a first year starter.
they had probably the toughest schedule in the history of the nfl and still just barely missed the playoffs.
i think brees is their guy. they can dump rivers for some draft picks or to fill a need.
with rivers next year, they're in a learning process. with brees, they're an extremely legitimate contender.

the Brees you see now though is most likely the best you'll see of him. He's overachieved, and he isnt the QB to bring these guys all the way because he makes costly mistakes. Rivers was a great talent out of college and hasnt gotten a chance. There's a risk involved, but not many teams win Super Bowls by playing it safe and not making bold decisions.

Rivers just needs to develop some Gates vision right away and he'll be alright. The guy's such a huge target that can catch everything.

Dec 19 ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the San Diego Chargers will begin long-term contract discussions with QB Drew Brees after the 2005 season.

I think if they were ever going to get rid of Brees, they have an excuse now because they failed to make the playoffs. It's not his fault they had one of the toughest schedules around. It's not Brees's fault they lost a lot of close games, there are problems on defense in the passing game that need to be fixed. Brees should stay a San Diego Charger, but I have a feeling this is the perfect excuse to have Rivers come in next season as the starter, or split series with him. If Brees is gone from the Chargers, he'll be in high demand- huge contract, multi-year-deal. He's a franchise quarterback for sure.

It might not be all of his fault, be he is a person at fault for a lot of the losses. He has 15 interceptions and lost 4 fumbles on the year. In 2004, he only threw 7 picks and lost two fumbles.

All of his fumbles have been from poor protection, the same reason LT hasn't produced lately. The offensive line has fallen to peices basically. The interceptions have been a hassle from him, but I feel if you put him in a position where he has protection he is going to find the open man. He is still a great young quarterback who is semi-established who can grow even more, while with Rivers you don't know if you've got a duck or if you have the guy of the future.
