I was doing some research on the California punk scene and read that the sound changed from traditional punk to hardcore (ala Black Flag). While the poll isn't supposed to be limited to the Cali punk scene of the '70s-80s, I wanna know whether people prefer traditional punk rock vs. hardcore.
punk rock for me. i occasionally like some hardcore, but for the most part it doenst do a whole lot for me

It's tough to say. I can't even vote. Both genres are SO huge.

had to go with hardcore, i think theres too much of an image behind punk and many punk bands try too hard to fit the punk stereotype, i think that hardcore (even though it came from punk) is more free and often more honest. (not bashing on punk at all, theres still some honest punk bands out there) but atleast by me the punk scene is pretty much dead as far as i know, but the hardcore scene is alive and well.

Hardcore. The problem is is that people think that bands like The Devil Wears Prada, or As I Lay Dying is hardcore. I'm sick of dumb people.

They are very related. I like both and even mixing them is kool. Not too many bands do but it is awesome when it works

Hardcore. Punk wasn't even about rebellion until the Sex Pistols came around, and with people like Johnny Ramone and Sid Vicious it became more about fashion. Fuck that shit. I'd rather listen to Black Flag or Minor Threat anyways. Sad to say that hardcore has become about fashion now, even though it was created for the very opposite reason.

You think hardcore heavyweights like Have Heart, Cold World, Ceremony, Trash Talk, etc. really give a shit about fashion?
Do you mean hardcore music, or the fans of that music?

I'm talking about fans of course. Like the whole scene just isn't fun to be around. There are some awesome bands still out there though, playing the music they love and spreading their messages, not giving a shit about what anyone thinks. But a lot of the fans are all about the fashion, or the ridiculous synchronized dancing, or other stupid things, just like the punks with their fashion in the 70's. It just kind of makes you think, since when do I have to "prove myself worthy" to listen to a certain type of music?

I said punk, although hardcore is dominating the scene right now.
I'm not huge into hardcore, but I really like punk music. Its kinda funny that a lot of you people are judging from the fans, or which bands sold out, and other stuff like that. Its not about that, its about the music that is punk, and the music that is hardcore, which do you prefer.
But anywho, I think it's the slow breakdowns that kill hardcore for me.

The question wasn't just "punk or hardcore", it was "early punk (meaning 70's/80s) vs. early hardcore (meaning late 70's/early 80's)". So this means bands like The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, and The Germs vs. bands like Black Flag, Bad Brains, and Minor Threat. It totally disregards newer bands like Have Heart and Verse and such, and even the ridiculous bands like Terror.
