Hmmm...I think the best melodies come without warning, when you are alone and focusing heavily on a feeling. Sometimes it can happen with the rest of the band when we all reach some kinda apex of emotion at a new part of a song that really comes together. The vocal melody on "as the night explodes" came that way. I HIGHLY recommend Alice Parker's book, "The Anatomy of Melody." You'll enjoy it - and it has some exercises/reflections to do, as well, if you're into that.
