Settle the Sky - Now That We're Waiting EP
Record Label: Standby Records
Release Date: October 28, 2008

Who?

Another band from the metalcore hotbed of America, Ohio.

How is it?

Chances are you've heard Settle the Sky a million times before without actually having to listen to Settle the Sky. There is very little seperating them from the countless bands exactly like them. Despite all of that, Now That We're Waiting is still quite an impressive release.

Whatever the reason may be, some bands use keys very sparingly begging the question, "Why bother?". Not only do Settle the Sky incorporate keys, they incorporate them well. The haunting piano solo at the beginning of "Cheyenne" may hands down be the best execution of keys I've ever heard among metalcore bands. Another well executed example of the keys comes at the beginning of "The Gunslinger" (again, props to keyboardist JD Merril). Aside form the keys, the rest of the band perfectly show off the tremendous skills they possess. Drummer Samuel Miller does an excellent job changing tempos from song to song, creating variation between them. He is able to transition seamlessly from faster tracks ("Now That We're Waiting," "The Gunslinger") to slower ones ("Cheyenne").

While it's no secret that Settle the Sky aren't pushing the envelope in terms of creativity, there's something to be said about a band who play their instruments well and write honest, heartfelt lyrics. For fans who appreciate bands like that, Settle the Sky is definitely a band to check out. Metalcore fans be on the lookout: Settle the Sky are a band with the potential to be huge in 2009.

The Devil Wears Prada; Emarosa; Gwen Stacy; Sea of Treachery

I'll give them a chance, I LOVED the old Emarosa EP.
I wouldn't quite say it's like that EP but these guys certainly use keys as much as Emarosa did.

Saw these guys a while ago when they played with my friend's band, and they were pretty good. The beginning of Cheyenne was wicked live and stayed stuck in my head for a while. This is worth checking out. Nice review.

Settle the Sky are a band with the potential to be huge in 2009.

Not really. Since this EP released most of the band has left. Their main vocalist is now in Run Into the Shadows, plus one of their guitarists joined Before Their Eyes. Only two original members are in the band.

There pretty much 'local' to Toledo and there's definitely a distaste with these guys here cause they seriously played the same six songs every show for a year or two and everyone got bored of them.

The fact that they can't keep members at all now isn't a good sign either, as their drummer and one of their guitarists just left (as well as a lot of drama when Dan left which lead to him pointing out that they were being a bunch of hypocrites and going against everything they believed in...which seemed to lead to this band becoming SUPER preachy).

Everyone here used to love these guys but last time they played here there were maybe 15-20 people? Fremont still is in to it, but I refuse to consider Fremont a legit scene (haha) when their main venue doesn't allow any movement (no mosh, no dancing, no pushing...my 15 year old friend started a pit and then got assaulted by a 40+ year old adult that was security) and all the kids there show up at shows looking like they just had a Hot Topic shopping spree and then go smoke outside for all the other bands besides the locals..

Got this EP from a friend and I really enjoy it. "Cheyenne" has such an awesome intro, that's true musicianship on a keyboard, unheard of in the metalcore bizness.
