View Full Version : Switching majors/colleges

I'm going to try to keep this short.
I go to school right now for film production. It is stressful and the last few months of school were hell, and without a doubt the most difficult time of my life in terms of school. That being said, I failed a class by 5% making me unable to return in the fall. I have concluded that while something I enjoy doing, a career in the film industry might not be for me.
I looked up other programs at other colleges (closer to home) and found one I really enjoy. The only problem I have now is... how do I tell my mom and dad who really don't like to see me fail (or waste money) that I want to switch into something new and pretty much give up on what I've done/spent money on for the last two years.
Any tips/advice/anal jokes/insults you fine APers could lend me?

No amount of money is worth your unhappiness or discomfort. Sounds cheesy, but, it's true. Just be down to Earth with them when explaining that you've found it's not the best path for you to take.

as said before me, do what makes you feel happy and stress-free. classes should not put an enormous strain upon your life. your parents may not understand at first and they may in fact be quite upset, but in the end as long as you feel better about your situation they will come around and see that.

Why not try and hit up a local community college just to get some of your basic classes out of the way. You can save a shit ton of money. I had to take 2-3 a couple years ago and if I would've realize that they were so cheap and so much easier, I would've done that from the start.
Talk to the main college you want to go to and they will tell you what classes will transfer over and which ones will not.
You can save around 60-65% per class by going to cc.

All solid advice. Thanks a lot. I think my biggest concern is that my parents pay for literally all of my education with their money and through loans so I am going to feel kind of bad about that.

I am from Canada so we do not have a system like this. We have colleges and universities which are two very separate entities and do not work in quite the same way as their American counterparts, though this is good advice and I appreciate you posting it.

I go to Niagara College which is close to Buffalo, NY and St. Catharines, ON. Its very small. I am unable to use any of these credits for other programs here as well. Its bullshit.

Well I have always been and continue to be a good writer, which is a statement I can make with confidence so I have been looking into Journalism at Sheridan College. However, right now there is a wait list of 35 people and it doesn't have a January start. However they did say they do accept people right up to and including the first day of classes.

I guess there is no easy way to tell them because the first thing they will probably think is all of the time/money that was wasted. But I would assume they'll come around and realize you couldn't keep being unhappy and that you'd probably just keep failing courses if you didn't come to them and tell them.
join the porn industry after.
