Subtract everything I told you except for Cymbals Eat Guitars then. They're an alternative rock band in the vein of Brand New, Modest Mouse, and Built to Spill that put an amazing debut album out this year.

I really did not enjoy this album, and I had moderate hopes going in.
I love it. The first song (Ashes In The Snow, maybe?) is beautiful. I wrote many a papers to this album this semester.
Haven't been really impressed with anything yet. I picked up NFG and Kelly Clarkson, both are solid. The new Isis is good, that's probably the one I have liked the most so far.

You know, I would consider it a beautiful album if it had some more exciting points in it. A little bit too anti-climactic for me.

I was pretty impressed with the new NFG album. Not in the way that "WOW THEY HAVE NEVER DONE THAT BEFORE!" But in the way that it's good solid pop punk, and sounds like their older stuff. I like all the songs on it's just a great pop punk album.
Oh Clayton, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who bought Kelly, haha.

Oh, hi, me too. I don't listen to it much because, when in the mood for her, I usually go to Breakaway, but there are definitely some fun songs on there.

It was a nice return to form for them, I like it. 'Tangled Up' and 'Please Don't Let This be the End' especially.

True, Breakaway is better, but stuff like 'Long Shot', 'Don't Let Me Stop You', 'Ready'...are right up there on par with it.
Even though I am disappointed in 2009 so far, Iron and Wine B-sides is out in a few weeks (May 19th I think), so that's going to make my year.

Bradley Hathaway - A Mouth Full of Dust
Manchester Orchestra - Mean Everything to Nothing
As Cities Burn - Hell or High Water
The Gentlemen - A Candid History of Faith, Hope, Love
The latter are an up-and-coming band over here in the UK. Sort of indie, but a slightly more unique sound. Bit vague, but I'd highly recommend them.
Oh, and before the Kelly topic dies off, I love the song "Whyyawannabringmedown" and have no idea why. It just really caught me by surprise; it's so fun.
Yeah I am liking that more with more listens. It's pretty silly, but it's a really fun one for sure.

Yeah, it's been pretty good year so far. I don't think I can make a list of my favorite five but the ones I really like are Metric (probably my favorite so far), Bat for Lashes, Camera Obscura, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Animal Collective. I just noticed almost all of those bands have girl singers. I guess I'm just really digging female vocalists. I also really like the new As Cities Burn cd, which is kind of something different for me, but I like it.

5. The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love

A lot of potential and a lot of good ideas, but overall, it's quite an empty album. There is no reward for your listening. No climax. Just build-ups with no payoff.

This has been a year for female singers. St. Vincent, PJ Harvey and Yeah Yeah Yeahs are all going to make my top ten list. From what i've heard Bat For Lashes is promising too. Yeah, As Cities Burn seemed out of place, but if you like it you like it. Metric is your favorite? I mean be thinking of someone else but i thought they were terrible haha.

Yeah, The Hazards of Love is quite a difficult listen. I am only recently beginning to enjoy it. Cymbals Eat Guitars released their debut album Why There Are Mountains this year, and has been getting great reviews from everyone. They're already developing their own little place in alternative rock with their Built to Spill/Modest Mouse/Brand New-esque music because they are more chaotic and challenging than their inspirations.

I don't get that feeling. But if that's what you feel, then so be it. It's just a little weird to me that you like MPP so much when I, personally, find the two albums to be linked inextricably with each other.

Well The Ugly Organ is undoubtedly better than Mama, I'm Swollen, but yeah, Mama was a grower (Pun intended). It's got a very different feel to it, less abrasive, more clean guitars, slower songs, etc, but it's a different feel and angle that Cursive can pull off. When I'm listening to Mama, I'm Swollen, I'm not thinking about The Ugly Organ. What it boils down to is that it's a different enough album that you've got to anticipate it's different mood and feel, then you can really hear it's quality so you aren't searching for a sound that isn't there.

I'll always dig the powerpop thing. If you spin any given Midtown or Fall Out Boy or Starting Line album, I will bob my head and mutter the words under my breath like I was 15 all over again. As I said earlier, it's a fun, summery little LP and it's the kind of thing I would have sworn by in my mid-teens. Kudos and impressive for an 18 year old kid who'd never recorded before. It's evident that this was a labour of love.

Albums I'm really digging this year: Camera Obscura, Balmorhea, Double Handsome Dragons, Graf Orlock, Mastodon, Matt & Kim, mewithoutYou (oh no cred breach, sue me), Mono, Moving Mountains, My Heart to Joy, Passion Pit, Sonic Youth, Thermals
there's some stuff I'm liking okay, and a lot that I'm just not having any of... probably an equal amount of stuff I haven't looked into yet.
Also, that Northbrook album is the most god-awful piece of shit ever. It sounds like 3!OH!3 riding a mechanical bull. Also, Mentos are gross. Fuck Randall.

Albums that strive for a unified narrative rarely work. This one did to an extent. It's heartbreaking. The music itself though was adequate, but nothing more.

There's been a hell of a lot of good music this year...one suggestion would be The Thermals' Now We Can See (not sure if it's been mentioned yet) (edit: apparently it has...)

Mos Def - The Ecstatic
Manchester Orchestra- Means Everything to Nothing
The Dirty Projectors - Bitte T something
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion
Cymbals Eat Guitars - Why There Are Mountains
The Antlers - Hospice
Anchor & Braille - Felt
Grizzly Bear- Veckatimest
Against Me- The Original Cowboy
I feel kind of silly doing this when I have so much to catch up on, but hey.
While not my favorite album of the year, my "why do I like this album when it seems to be the opposite of most things that I like" award goes to Soap&Skin - Lovetune For Vacuum. It's an album by an 18 year old piano-playing goth chick from Austria; she has a very pretty voice, but this album is very unsettling for me to listen to. Her songs are littered with the kind of creepy noises that make your arm hairs stand up, and while I am almost never actually scared by music, there are more than a few songs on this album that made me jump or feel fear when I first heard them.
Dinosaur Jr.'s "Farm" (new loud and fuzzy album from one of my favorite loud and fuzzy bands)
Mew's "No More Stories Are Told Today..."
The Loved Ones' "Distractions"
Bomb The Music Industry!'s " Scrambles"
The Antlers' "Hospice" (I love this album, but don't know how to describe it other than it's big and sad)
Regina Spektor's "Far"
The Marked Men's "Ghosts" (solid punk-like album)
The Thermals' "Now We Can See"
Manchester Orchestra's "Mean Everything To Nothing"
Passion Pit's "Manners" (well-executed fun pop songs)
Kasms' "Spayed"
Sonic Youth's "The Eternal" (inspired me to want to listen to their other albums, besides Daydream Nation)
The Bakerton Group's "El Rojo"
Clubroot - Clubroot (Trippy dubstep stuff)
Cougar's "Patriot" (good electro-infused post-rock in smaller song chunks than most post-rock albums)
I Monster's "A Dense Swarm Of Ancient Stars"
We Were Promised Jetpacks, "These Four Walls" (Scottish indie rock)
Ptarmigan's "Our Ancient Friends"
Anneke van Giersbergen's "Pure Air"
William Elliott Whitmore's "Animals In The Dark"
Morrissey's "Years Of Refusal"
Thunderheist's self-titled album
The Tumbled Sea's "Melody/Summer"
Kurt Vile's "God Is Saying This To You"
The Dirty Projectors' "Bitte Orca"
Charlotte and Magon's "Love Happening"
UGK's "UGK 4 Life" (I figure that Clipse and Jay-Z's new albums when they drop will knock this off my list though)
Metric's "Fantasies"
Caspa's "Everybody's Talking, Nobody's Listening"
Clutch's "Strange Cousins From The West"
Franz Ferdinand's "Tonight"
Neko Case's "Middle Cyclone"
But which album is my favorite? It's one I haven't mentioned.
If I had to name one though, Eels - Hombre Lobo is my favorite album of the year so far; but to be honest I'm very heavily biased about this and I have too much emotional attachment to this band over the years to be as truly objective about them as most people are. Have you ever really liked an album or artist but you just know that most people won't like it as much as you do for whatever reason? Like it hits all the right spots for you personally, but you can't imagine most people getting that same reaction from it? That's this album, and it's why I mentioned my favorite album so far this year at the very bottom of my post!

Any thoughts on best rap/hip hop albums.
I think Mos Def- The Ecstatic is the best release of the year hands down. I also really enjoyed Wale's tape. Any other contenders? This year has been kind of weak hip-hop-wise. Hopefully Jay or someone throws down a nasty album. Or Kanye's d-bag self loses the auto-tuner and pulls another College Dropout out of nowhere.

Mos Def's new album was whack. Wouldn't crack the top ten of just hip hop albums. Jazz Liberatorz - Fruit of the Past and DOOM - Born Like This are two of the best albums all around in my opinion to drop this year. Plus Rae, Jay-Z, Rhymefest all have albums coming out. Hopefully Skyzoo and Killer Mike drop their albums by the end of year too. Wale's mixtape was good though and Attention Deficet is suppose to come out at some point but who knows.

I'll have to check out the Jazz and Doom albums. I have heard a lot of good things about Doom but I've never actually listened to one of his albums. You really didn't like the Mos album? I thought it was pretty sick. His best since Black on Both Sides.

Well it wasn't too hard to make an album better than his previous two so I'll give you that but it's still not saying much. Also it probably doesn't need to be repeated but P.O.S. - Never Better was a good album along with Ivan Ives new album. Super Chron Flight Brothers released a dope album for free. King & The Cauze mixtape was good and they are suppose to be releasing a full length this year I believe. New Royce Da 5'9" is suppose to be hot. I also really enjoyed Cunninlynguists album - Strange Journey Music Vol 1 (Vol 2 is coming in Nov I belive). Also Brother Ali's 9 song EP that he released this year was good and he is suppose to have a new album coming out sometime this year I believe.
