View Full Version : Vagina Burns During Sex

My girlfriend complains that she's experiencing intense burning pain during sex. She says it feels like it's burning deep inside and that it grows in intensity the more we have sex. She had a yeast infection a little while ago and she got treated for it. Her doctor said it was cleared but the pain still remains. When she went to see the doctor again to complain about the pain, the docotr examined her and said there's nothing there. It's obvious that there is a problem, that something is causing it. She's also on birth control (the pill, I think it's Kariva), so I'm wondering if that could be a side effect. We stayed abstinent for a full month before we tried again and the pain was still there. The doctor even said we should lube it, but that's not the problem, she gets wet, it just hurts for her. What can we do? It's ruining our sex life. Something's gotta give! Any suggestions as to what we can do?

I read in a stupid magazine once that girls can be allergic to their boyfriend's semen? Sooo, perhaps if you're not using condoms that's possible?
I dunno though, that sucks.
Let me have a go. I'll sort her out for you.

If you're using a condom maybe she's having an allergic reaction to the latex....? Other than that I don't know. However, a suitable solution to this problem would be -- WAIT FOR IT -- anal.

1) have her see another doctor, the doctor can't just say "well it looks okay to me. go home." or whatever, that's bullshit, they should have offered her possible causes/solutions.
2) are you wearing a condom? if so, perhaps it's a latex allergy. if not, perhaps, as previously mentioned she could be allergic to your semen (it happens), it could also be the lube if you're using that.
3) there could be other causes but having that situation is not uncommon from what i've read.
She needs to go to another gynecologist or even just Planned Parenthood and talk to them about it. This is obviously not the best place for great advice.
good luck!

She could have vulvodynia. It's where the nerves around the entrance to the vagina become too sensitiv, exactly why this happens is not known, but it isn't because of too much or too frequent sex. Or quite possibly she may have vaginitis, or an inflammation of the vagina. Another thing is to have her try Kegel exercises. While it doesn't eliminate the pain, it prolongs the time to get it and it'll burn less.

while i'm sure your input is appreciated, it is important to recognize that the advice being handed out on here is not from a doctor and it is in her best interest not to get medical expertise from random strangers without medical schooling on the internet.
i'm not saying you are wrong - you may very well have hit the nail on the head with your diagnoses, but it's still much better that she hear it from a licensed professional in person.

I wasn't saying to take my advice and only my advice. I highly suggest she go to the doctor, but why state what plenty of others have before me?
And just to add this in, I'm a pre-med student. I looked in my books and notes on this condition and I've had it before, so I'd personally like to think I have at least somewhat of a background on this condition. You're right, I'm not a doctor (yet), but I was just voicing my opinion on what I thought it may be.

I'm not sure why you would post something like this here, but I will inform you of at least a few, of the many, different possibilities. For the record, although I am a medical student, I am not a licensed physician yet, so this is simply friendly advice, not a diagnosis, treatment advice, etc.
Dyspareunia (pain during intercourse) is a frequent symptom seen during infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and approximately 80% of women are asymptomatic with gonorrhea. However, if the doctor did a full pelvic, there is normally a purulent cervical/vaginal discharge that he should have seen. Urethritis (caused, by say, UTI by Staphylococcus saprophyticus, E. coli, etc.) could also manifest as this, although she would often have dysuria with that. There are plenty of other things that could cause it as well, but I think the most important thing is to get another opinion. She should probably have a pap smear and maybe see a OB-GYN who is more knowledgeable.
TheZeroKid
05/09/09, 10:43 PM
Thanx for all the legitimate advice. She thinks it might be the pill she's taking so she's getting off of that particular brand and is going to talk with her doctor about getting on another brand. If that works, great. If not, we're gonna look into other forms of birth control. What to the med students here think of IUDs? Are they safe? Is it better than the pill? Since it isn't specifically medicine, it shouldn't bother her that way, right?

I personally wouldn't get an IUD, but that's just me. I'd be too paranoid about it being imbedded or expelled.
Umm, some advantages are: that it's not messy, long lasting, and it works almost immediately. Disadvantages being: it can be expelled, cause more difficult menstural periods, and possible risk of future infertility.
There are 2 different kinds, that I'm aware of: ParaGard and Mirena. The ParaGard has a tiny copper wire wrapped around the plastic body, so if she is by chance allergic to copper, get Mirena. Both can cause longer, heavier, more painful menstural periods, but that's less common with Mirena. Mirena can also cause ovarian cysts. Some women using the Mirena stop bleeding altogether but usually their menstrual periods return when the IUD is removed. Mirena can cause weight gain, headaches, increased blood pressure, acne, depression, and decrease in sex drive.
Failure rates within the first year are 0.6% with perfect use.
Costs between $175 and $500 up front, but lasts up to 12 years.
Mirena releases progestin into the uterus, which keeps the ovaries from releasing an egg and causes the cervical mucus to thicken so sperm can’t reach the egg. It also affects the ability of a fertilized egg to successfully implant in the uterus.
ParaGard releases a small amount of copper into the uterus, which prevents the sperm from reaching and fertilizing the egg. It fertilization does occur, the IUD keeps the fertilized egg from implanting in the lining of the uterus.
So, if that doesn't work for you guys, I'd say look into the shot (Depo-Provera), patch (Ortho Evra), or vaginal ring (NuvaRing).
Hope this helps!

Jesus Christ, fuck that! lol, sorry that seems too much trouble than it's worth. Hopefully we find a pill that works out. She doesn't wanna try out NuvaRing, she thinks it'll cause her physical discomfort. She doesn't trust (which, I guess, is code for "doesn't understand") how the patch works. I've never heard of the shot before.

the shot has a lot of issues and if you have a negative reaction to it, guess what? you're stuck with it because it's gotta take time to wear off since there is no antidote to it.

Haha, yeah. Implantation of the IUD can take 5-10 minutes and it'll take less time to take it out. I like how you don't have to worry about it, really. Not having to remember to take it or put it on on a daily or weekly basis
But, the patch you just put it on once a week for 3 weeks, and during that fourth week she won't have one on and she'll start her period. It's about $30-35 a month, so $420 a year. There are some side effects like irregular bleeding, nausea, weight gain, and skin reactions where it's placed. It's only 1 3/4" and can be placed pretty much anywhere. And basically the way it works is that it releases hormones through the skin into the bloodstream to prevent pregnancy. It's about as effective as the pill, so about 5-8 women out of 100 will become become pregnant within the first year.
While NuvaRing seems simple (just placing it in once a month), there are quite a few side effects and risks. If she properly places it, then it shouldn't hurt, but you can never be sure, I guess.
I had a friend who got she shot. She didn't like it, but it was less of a hassle to her, I guess? It's given once every 3 months, less than 3 in 100 girls will get pregnant within the first year, irregular or no menstural periods, weight gain, breast tenderness, and depression are all possible side effects. Each injection costs about $60, so $240 a year.

tell your girlfriend to stop soaking her tampons in alcohol to get drunk: http://hubpages.com/hub/Parents-Beware-of-Vodka-Soaked-Tampons
Another perceived benefit is that the user gets high without the stomach upset associated with drinking. While this may be true, putting ethanol into contact with the highly sensitive vaginal or rectal mucosa likely causes burning discomfort in the short term and a drying effect over the long term. This could lead to bleeding during normal functioning.

Well, she's off the pill now and we've had sex since then and she said she doesn't feel it burning anymore so...yeah, I guess it was a side effect of the pill. So now, I'll just have to be careful and pull out. Unless there's another pill that doesn't have the side effect...

yes they can. people have different pH balances in their vagina and some semen is too alkaline (it depends on what the guy is consuming generally) and it acts as an irritant.
it is actually the protein in it. i thought dr drew said you couldnt be allergic to it on love line. my bad.
