View Full Version : Music Videos - how important are they?

I always wonder about this: how important do you think music videos are to the actual song itself? Do you think they are even important at all?
There's the obvious reasoning that if a song is great then it doesn't even have to be released as a single, let alone be given an accompanying video, to be recognised as a good song. But nowadays in the 'digital age' I swear that some songs only gain success based solely on the video being funny or attractive. I'm thinking of the piss-take band the Lonely Island. If youve heard their joke of a song "I'm on a boat" without the video not only does it lose it's hillarity, but is almost impossible to listen to.
Thoughts? Knowing your favourite music video would also be interesting....

Not important at all nowadays but, I enjoy them.

i have to admit, "im on a boat" is entertaining to watch, and makes that song a whole new level of funny. but i think that as far as serious music goes, videos are pointless, unless you are 14 years old and want to drool over some boy. they are also useful for determining if the band you once loved has finally kicked the can. a bad music video shows how hard a band has hit rock bottom.
and now, it seems like music vids are just a reason for ANY band to put half naked women in a room rubbing all over them.

I really don't enjoy music videos. Few bands do them right, imo. A lot of bands' videos consist of them singing on stage. They lack creativity for the most part.
Umm, you do realize The Lonely Island is a group of comedians that mainly focus on videos. They're not trying to make "good" songs. They're trying to make people laugh.

Yes, I do realise this, hence my calling them comedians.
I agree with what the dude above said about videos being a good way to determine if a band as reached rock bottom. In saying this, Fall Out Boy's most recent videos have been great (not that they were ever bad) but they're new material hasn't done nearly as well as IOH and FUCT for sure, and I'm only 90% won over by Folie a Deux.

I see you calling them a "piss-take band", but not comedians.

i really like what copeland did with 'You Are My Sunshine' .. instead of spending a ton of money on one music video for the single, they made a video for every song and released it as the special edition. it's a cool experience listening to and watching the entire album.

If the video has a message....then yes.
If it's trying to be funny or stupid or something like that...then no.

No one plays them so they're pretty useless.
