View Full Version : What's The Best Area For Music?

In your opinion, where is the best place for music today? I'd have to say Long Island, as that place has put out some of the best alternative music I've heard (The Movielife, Straylight Run, Taking Back Sunday, Bayside, Brand New, Glassjaw, etc.) I'd like to say Phoenix (my hometown), but truth is, I'm almost embarrassed to be from there, with the crap we're releasing these days.

Anyways, what do you think?

Dude I know. Everyone I know is a huge The Maine fan, and I just don't get it. It doesn't help that we are also home to the Summer Set, Scary Kids Scaring Kids and Greeley Estates either.

Yeah I spoke too soon though. There's good stuff there, it's just not really big..
Like The Constellation Branch is amazing(Jordan Cruz brings the intensity), Matthew Gilbert is pretty awesome, kinda getting bored hearing him though.

It's pretty generic to me. I liked em' in elementary school and they got me into some cool bands, but they're not that good.

Top four music areas imo

1) Seattle
2) Omaha
3) New Bruswick NJ and NJ in general
4) Chicago

That's what I was thinking.

lol @ the bands you mentioned making the best alternative music

New York City (across its five boroughs) is probably the best through all genres of music.

Second would have to be North Jersey, with Southern California placing third.

After that it's not really close.

SKSK is a perfect example of a band never topping their debut.

Their EP was phenomenal. Their full-lengths are completely bland.

nyc/long island/north jersey, I would say the tri-state area, but not much has come out of connecticut. You pretty much get so much diversity here and obviously a lot of bands have been successful from these places.

London and Chicago for sure.

Seattle is good but not much has come out of there other then grunge and the after shocks of grunge.

Chicago obviously has a great Alternative and pop punk scene (Fall Out Boy, Alkoline Trio, Smashing Punpkins) and is also fantastic for live music (eg the 'six corners' in Wicker Park).

No one denies that London has a great rock and 'punk' scene.

eliselovesmusic

Oh but I'd like to add that screamo acts and the likes of Lady Sovereign don't exactly shed a good light on the London music scene of recent times.

But seriously, I do wish Seattle could be known for more than just grunge. I do enjoy some of the typically known Seattle bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but there are others. I'm pretty sure Jimi Hendrix is from Seattle as well.

LOL at your silliness. Obviously I mentioned Seattle for all the great indie bands they have not fucking grunge muisic dude. Maybe if you listened to more than just scene music you would know that
I realize that Seattle puts out lots of different music. I'm just saying, they're known mainly for their alternative rock/grunge bands.

And I do listen to indie music. I love it when people attack me making false assumptions when they don't know what the hell they're talking about.

It definitely bothers me. I mean, people have said that I know more about the Seattle scene because I live closer to it. I may live on the west coast, but Seattle is still... maybe four hours away, and I never go there, so when people use the "well you know more about the Seattle scene because you live closer to it" thing it's just stupid. I've been there like four times in my life, and the bands you named prove that they aren't all just "obscure little indie bands" that only people on the west coast would know about. There are some pretty decent sized bands from there that aren't even close to being grunge.

Hahaha, yeah. Death Cab and Modest Mouse are in no way small indie bands. And The Blood Brothers aren't indie at all, but they were huge as well. It's completely ridiculous for someone to think that all Seattle and the Pacific Northwest have is/ever had was grunge. And there's loads more bands from Portland as well, which includes Elliot Smith and The Decemberists.

Yeah, I'm pretty defensive about the Portland/Seattle scene, even though I would never claim to really be apart of either of them, at least not actively involved besides occasionally going to shows. But they're the closest things I have to a music scene because where I live, most of the up-and-coming bands are country so Portland and Seattle are really the closest ones that I enjoy, or know of, and I do hope to move to Portland in a few years. Just irks me when people don't realize all of the good bands that have come out of those places.

Seattle for sure. (Modest Mouse, Death Cab, This Providence, Forgive Durden, Aiden, Amber Pacific, The Classic Crime, Daphne Loves Derby, Gatsbys American Dream) those are just off the top of my head.

I think the best part about seattle music is the local scene though. Ive talked to people all over the country and their local music scenes don't compare, it just seems like were a little isolated up here and its hard to get the word out. Im biased though, so who knows

Runners up would be New York and SoCal
