According to this article (http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=1750067 33), it seems that the stock headphones that come bundled with every iPod can cause serious hearing loss.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the bud style headphones. When I get my iPod I'm getting some over the ear headphones.

ehhh, this is nothing new. But really, I doubt most people listen to their iPods with the volume turned up the level of concerts. But not all in-ear headphones are bad. If you get sound isolation ones (Shure makes good ones), you don't have to turn up the volume as high to block out outside noise, and thus, you don't damage your eats.

Same thing with me. I tried every kind of ear bud and they just fall out of my ear halfway through one song. I use the over the ear ones, except some go bad quickly and the music only comes out of one side. I now use those sony h.e.a.r ones or whatever they're called, the ones that are blue, I don't know. They were 10 bucks at target.

nerogtr
01/01/06, 05:42 PM
all headphones can cause hearing loss. although it may be true that the bud style headphones may tend to make people turn up louder, it should be noted that the problem isn't exclusive to that style, and the problem lies not in the design but the user who turns shit up too loud.

on a side note: wear ear plugs at concerts, you wont regret it later in life hahaha.

Though you'll see slang terms thrown around here and there, I can't review a hip hop album and not use 'hot' from time to time.

It's not as much of an issue of the earphones. 120db volume is nothing new and 6db less at that kind of volume wouldn't help the user too much. They would just be able to listen longer. The point about listening time is very interesting though. I think the article should be about The Used's last tour though. That was disgustingly loud. Live sound engineers focus on their equipment not distorting but they don't realize that our ears naturally distort at a certain threshold as a defense mechanism.

Shure E2's are nice and are only 80 bucks. The E3's are much better though. However, I wouldn't recommend using them while walking or biking because you probably will die since they block out as much outside sound as your average earplugs.

Scott, those things are ugly as shit :D

Edit: Though, I will say, my cans are Sennheiser HD 280 Pro's, and they are superb. They make good products.

Edit 2: Apple's ear bud phones were lacking. But their new in-ear canal phones are actually quite good, and easily up to par with Sony's similar priced models.

As for hearing loss, I don't really care. I figure, by the time it get serious, medical technology will have advanced and saved me.
