View Full Version : Good or Bad Idea?

Millennium is a CD store in Charleston, SC, that is bulking up its used disc inventory by offering iPods in exchange for used (but good-condition) CDs. They'll take the discs in person or by post.
45 CDs = 512 MB iPod Shuffle
65 CDs = 1 GB iPod Shuffle
85 CDs = 2 GB iPod Nano
110 CDs = 4 GB Nano
130 CDs = 30 GB iPod
175 CDs = 60 GB iPod

Yeah, my brother goes to school at the College of Charleston. I went to visit him back in October and this place is in a very nice area. They have a good reputation around campus. It's the place where kids go when they want a CD. You're putting your CD's in good hands if you do this. I personally think it's a good idea, but like someone said, I don't have that many CD's in good enough condition haha.

how are they getting the shaft? if they can sell those CDs back for 6-8 bucks each, they're making a really significant profit, even if they only manage to sell back like 70% of them
i could probably scrape together 45 CD's i don't listen to anymore, but it'd hardly be worth it just to get a shuffle that i probably wouldn't even use. I'd rather just pay for a 4G Nano than send in 110 CD's.
TimeAsIdeology

No way dude. Figure this. A 60 GB Ipod is what, $400? You send in $175 CD's, all they have to do is sell them at $3 a piece and they've already made close to $500. I don't know how it works out for the others, I'm too lazy to bother with the math, but I'm sure they're turning at least a small profit, and increasing their stock and variety 10 fold in the process.
I am pretty sure that you have to have the original jewel case with all the linear notes and what not. There was some link my buddy sent me with more information in it. They also can't be promos and a list of other shit like they can't be your highschool band. They have to be something that they can probably sell.
Edit: I went and found the link for you guys. This should give you more details about the deal.

I think it's an productive idea for those with CD's in good condition of course living amongst the others in that section of planet E. As for myself my Cd's are in rent condition, not to mention my room is so messy I've accidently stepped on a few of them.
The ones taking turns in my 1 disc changer of my car "Cosmo" are in even worse condition.
There's a store here called Evolution Records which does something of the similar but you get cash not shuffles... ipod gadgets.

So, you're trading cds for an iPod?
So on the low end, 175 cds at $12 a pop (yeah, even that low) will be worth $2100.
You could buy 5 iPod with that money.
Yeah, I know used cds won't get as much, probably half, but you could still buy 2 iPods.

Correction. This place sucks. They have by far the highest prices for CD's I've ever seen. Manifest and Cat's are much better in Charleston. This might be the good place to pick up Dave Matthews cd's, but if you are looking for anything on an indie label, it better have massive distro to be in here. Border's carries a better selection of cd's than these guys do.

Did you people read the link? Most likely if you got your CDs in a large lot for cheap they arent going to count. They want stuff that they can sell. As for promos I think those count as long as they are good titles. I like used CDs stores with promos and advance copies since where else can you get those. The best is Amoeba in Hollywood anyone been there that place is hugh and im sure they have almost anything you are looking for and most likely used. Its the best when it says right on the CD this is a promo CD and can not be sold or transfer and then the store has a price tag right over it. Now thats saying fuck you to the major record labels. Everyone sell your promos or give ebay or half.com a chance I sell about $100 of CDs on there every month. It gives me money to buy new ones. As for this deal a lot of stores have been doing this since it can work out nicely for both sides. Try a store though that will put all of your CDs on the iPod for you as well as a back up disc of all the songs. You can find plenty of people doing this on craiglist.

The Borders was a blanket statement. Millenium is not $12. I only see CD's for $15-$17 when I'm there. I still stand by the fact that they have terrible selection. Although I will give the Millenium downtown credit for being better than the Millenium in Mt. Pleasant. That is really bad. Also, Cats is a five minute drive from downtown, and there is actually parking there.

then one day i realized i was stupid because i wanted to listen to some of them again.

iPod's are cool. BUT cd's are cooler. i'd rather have all the cd's and pay the extra money and just get an iPod as well. it feels more legit. for some reason. maybe i'm just cooky.
