Alt. Press (http://www.altpress.com) had the following to say about Matchbook Romance (http://www.absolutepunk.net/matchbookromance) in their latest issue.
Rarely do you see bands in the current punk scene make an effort at reinventing themselves. Groups figure out their formula and stick to it, never coloring outside the lines. With "VOICES", Matchbook Romance prove they are one of the rare few who don't just tiptoe out on that creative limb; they jump up and down until the damn thing breaks. Forget what you know about MR (especially that "screamo" tag); THIS IS THE NEW NOISE.

i LIKED their "old formula." fuck this nonsense. this band is known for good "screamo" or "post-hardcore" whatever you want to label it. jumping into another genre after you actually have fans is lame.

its not lame at all if thats what they want to do, and they do a good job of it.
i'm sure they are making music because they want to make music, not to please you.

i dont mind a new sound, and this new 'forumula' isn't half bad either. monsters is a pretty decent song, but its not matchook romance, or atleast not the one we all associate them with. im glad that they didnt just regurgitate another stories and alibies, but this is a little drastic. still a good sound, but its not even the same genre anymore.

fearthesloths (http://www.absolutepunk.net/member.php?u=21907) vbmenu_register("postmenu_2315342", true); - when your signed and your JOB is to make music that people buy, its sorta important that people like it. if they were playing in their basement this would be a different case (my opinion)

Normally, I'm all for speaking your opinion, but when its one that is counter to everything that all the bands that inspired Matchbook Romance believe in, I'd like to ask you to considering checking out other forums and leaving this one before you post here again.

Right on, man. I hope they just get Stories And Alibis re-name every song with really long clever titles, and then give shitty interviews about "How they matured so much, and decided to stop making music that people wanted to hear, and make music for them." and then they can play shows, where no one shows up anymore and then start playing smaller venues and say it's cause they "wanna get closer to their fans again" when really it's due to poor ticket sales, only to have your ass come on APnet and say "Making the same album is lame" Sweet!

Wow, that's a stellar thing to be said about your band. They should feel good. You have to admit it's ballsy to change so much of the formula that got you signed and headlining tours... but hopefully it opens some eyes and let's bands know that it's almost necessary, cause everyone's sick of redundant emo/screamo. Creativity is the new cool.

you hit the nail right on the head there, buddy.

I agree. And while it is somewhat different, I don't think it's quite as drastic of a change as some people might be assuming or expecting. It's still very much a Matchbook Romance album, and I don't think the old fans will be disappointed. I certainly wasn't!

I can't really make up my mind if I like the new stuff. I need to keep listening to it to see if I can make up my mind. I do like that they have branched out of the formula and are being creative.

meh, they basically sound a lot like old thrice around the vocals, panic! around the circus-y ness, and a lot like the semi-progressive rock that was popular with, say, jimmy eat world.
not that it doesnt sound good, it just seems like a rather sudden jump to me... its sounds like shouldve changed their name, cause it aint matchbook romance.
but what do i know.
gatsbys says it's good and that's good enough for me.

The single is awesome, and from what I hear, the video is fucking amazing. I really really disliked this band before, but I think their new sound is rad.

ATTENTION Shadowsstatues, I'm sure that Matchbook Romance can sleep better tonight now that they have your almighty advice, did you ever think that maybe they didn't use this "New" formula to please you but maybe please themselves, in all seriousness usually one of the huge reasons people start bands is to play music that they can be proud of and "LOVE". I saw them play not to long ago and they are still playing stuff from Stories & Alibis, its been 3 years since that CD was written, maybe this new music is something they love also, which thus means lets go ahead and record it, But i'm sure Shadowsstatues you should send them an email so they can scrap the new CD.

It's mediocre. It's cool they're going for something a wealth more ambitious than Stories, but it's just kind of boring and sequenced strangely. All the more paced stuff is in the first half, and then the second is practically ballad city.

That is just ridiculous. Matchbook's EP was sick. The full length was decent, and the new song is just horrible, a great example of a band that has declined rapidly, and uses the "reinvented" tag to attempt to save themselves.

That's your opinion. I've personally always found MBR's music to be awful, I thought the lyrics and his voice were terrible. But...I like this song Monsters, and people are swearing by it, so I'm willing to give them a second chance.
