View Full Version : The Interconnectedness of Bad Robot

This thread might fail, but there are some things I really wanted to bring up after seeing Star Trek, the Fringe finale tonight, and am keeping up with LOST. I think J.J. Abrams is even more clever than we might think.
There were small things like the themes of Destiny and having a purpose were both addressed in Star Trek which we know are huge themes in LOST, but what really has sunk in lately is the perception of time:
Recently in LOST: The idea of alternate realities, that Faraday could change the past and create a reality where no one crashed on the island and none of the resulting consequences happened. This idea is what Faraday was devising before his death.
In Star Trek: The film uses the concept of an alternate timeline that the characters exist in, which is further explained by future-Spok.
In tonight's Fringe finale: The idea of alternate realities is a major focus of the world, that every event spawns another reality in which the other option was chosen.
I for one find it hard to believe that all 3 of these premiered within about a week timespan of each other, and that tomorrow night's LOST finale will deal heavily with the idea of alternate realities and choices, etc etc. I also see this as a very clever marketing plot for Bad Robot because all of these projects kinda help explain one another and explain to LOST fans what exactly is going on from other points of views, ya know?
I know this post is long, but hopefully I can start up a little discussion of the matter, who's in?

It is an interesting thought, and I won't discount it, but Star Trek's version of time travel was established a long time ago in the early stages of the franchise.
I admit, I was thinking this was a reference to him using Slusho in Star Trek. heh.

Meh...alternate realities and sci-fi kinda go hand and hand...
I think it's more 'one-trick pony symptom' than a full well thought out plan.

i believe that, but i specifically mean the use of it in the film and the way they explain it, and the alternate realities, etc seemed exactly as it was described on the other two, ya know?
And Slusho for sure, I think it started in Alias?

I swear to god JJ Abrams is going to eventually say that all of his franchises take place in the same universe, but in alternate realities. It's almost like he is creating his own world where anything can happen, without restrictions of fact. I like it.

Everything is actually taking place in an alternate 1985.

I love JJ Abrams.
He definitely had a ton of "shout-outs" (for lack of a better word) in Star Trek:
I swear I saw the Observer.
Same font as in LOST and Fringe to display "Three Years Later" and "Iowa" and things of that nature.
Cloverfield-ish monster.
Slusho
And he likes re-using characters, as well.
I have a feeling there could be connections between all of his works, but that may be a bit far-fetched. Either way, he loves to make you watch closely in order to pick up on small nuances and things that some people may not notice.
I'm slowly realizing more and more how much of a Sci-Fi nerd I really am.

i dunno if the two monsters looked all the similar

and I don't know if the Observer was in Star Trek or not, but I haven't seen anyone talking about it anywhere on the web. i'm sure if he were, people would be going nuts over it h aha

I saw it moreso in the way the monster walked/ran and some of the shots of the monster were very similar to the shots from Cloverfield.
And in regards to the Observer, that's what I was thinking as well... If he were truly there, I would've seen an article about it or something. Perhaps just a similarly dressed man.

God I wish the observer was in the movie, or shows up in LOST someday

Haha that would be a hell of an episode of LOST.
Also, I would love to see what they can do with the Cloverfield sequel idea that's been tossed around.

As much as I enjoyed Cloverfield, I do think it was built up a bit too much. It was entertaining, but not amazing. But yes, still very interested in what the sequel will be like

Something about it really had me from the start. Between the viral marketing, the various clues to follow, the mystery surrounding the monster, and just the way the movie itself was shot, I loved it haha

I'd also like to add that in at least 2/3 instances, the person explaining the alternate realities used the idea of deja vu to explain
screamoutmyname

I thought the use of Deja Vu as a way to describe Alternate Realities was brilliant. And the idea of a million different branches with each decision made, as well.

Hahaha yeah, same here... I just recently started trying to catch up on older LOST episodes, so I knew him as Broyles. I love how he re-uses actors.

I always knew him from Oz first off, seeing him in these roles just made me happier
Love this company, really like the use of the Dharma logo. I obviously caught in Cloverfield, but I couldn't catch it in Star Trek.

I think this thread was on my mind, because I actually saw it again today, and I was blown away by something I noticed. In the second viewing, the "Red Matter" reminded me of a Rambaldi Device from Alias:

I was reading about how the red matter related to Alias, very cool
