Hey Chris (http://www.askheychris.com) (immortalized in the Fall Out Boy (http://www.absolutepunk.net/falloutboy) song) has been working on a book - the preorder is now available (http://www.askheychris.com/book/bookminisite.html).

the book is great and has been out for awhile now.

remember, fob is on a major now, which means their label will pay money for any publicity they can get, even if it means sticking that garbage in borders. it's not because its a good book, its because of his ties to fall out boy. even one of their 12 year old fans would know that duh! lollerskates!

just because he happens to be mentioned in a fall out boy song, doesnt mean that hes trying to cash in on their fame. notice that the author of the book is "Christopher Gutierrez" and NOT Hey Chris, the moniker he's gone under ever since 'Grenade Jumper' was released, and that there is no mention of fall out boy in the title or anything. just because a song made him semi-famous doesnt mean it can prevent him from writing a book or that the book has anything to do with the song.

I can accept this. If someone dislikes the book because of it's substance, or lack of, that's fine. Don't hate this guy just because one of his friends happened to get popular and thanked him by writing a song about him.

The book is entertaining, which is more than I can say about some of the posters ripping it. Jesus Christ, most of you are so drowning in the sorrows of your sad music that you can't be happy for anyone or just let them live their life. He wrote a book about things he's done that are in no way related to falloutboy, how is this any different than if Tate wrote a book that was in no way related to AP? If you think the dude has cashed in at all on FOB's success, you're wrong. He's perpetually broke and works a job doing something he enjoys, but doesn't make millions at. Also, he had to submit an application to Borders and go through a review process before they would accept his book. It's not like Jon Janick or Jay Z called up Borders and said, "Hey yoz, the falloutboys song guy wrote a book, we'll cut you a mad 100k check to carry it." The book is practically rated X, if anything Island would probably pay them money NOT to carry it and have it be associated with FOB.

How can you say this book is good? Shitty little stories about his life? One including beating off to a fat black chick just because he is supposed to. This is entertaining to you? Watch a movie. Im saying its not like it says "by heychris." sure none of this probably wouldn't have happened if it werent for fall out boy's success, but i think if you knew more of his background you'd have a different outlook on it.

Anyone can tell a story, and it doesn't matter what the hell it's about.
It's how you tell it. Chris is struggling like everyone out there. You don't just suddenly go "I'm gonna quit my job and be an author!" You don't have to go to school to become a "real" musician, writer, graphic designer, or whatever. It's not illegal. Just cause his name is in a song doesn't mean he can't produce quality work of interesting encounters.

Yeah I realize that, but he didn't go to college did he even finish highschool? Yeah anyone can tell a story, but not everyone can tell them well. And some people don't realize when they are telling a bad story. That's Chris; bad story bad story teller. Nobody should insult this guy's integrity. I offered to interview him for another webzine to help him get some promotion and he asked me, "Have you read the book yet?" I replied, "No. I'm in school right now, so I'm hard on money." He fucking sent me a copy for free. Even with all he's sold, he's nowhere close to breaking even right now. He's not charging kids shipping for these or anything. He's losing money, if anything, and even so, he sent me one for free. Anytime I have asked him for help with something, he's never ignored me or told me to leave him alone. I've got nothing but respect for this guy. If anything, I'm thanking Fall Out Boy for letting me know about this guy. Yeah, he's name-dropped in a song, and now I see why. I'm glad people know who he is, because he's more bad-ass than any of you could ever be.
The book, while having some grammar and punctuation issues, is an entertaining read. There are two stories in particular about waxing and geese that get me laughing every time I read them.

what's the point of coming to a thread to attack/defend something? if you like it, great, buy and read the book. If you don't, great, don't buy or read it. There's no sense in attacking it or even, really, in defending it.
It's all a matter of opinion and there's far better things people could be arguing about, anyways.
Is he a literary genius? No. Will it be a bestseller? Probably not. Is it reading material that will challenge you and your way of thinking? No. Is it just a matter of tastes and opinions? Yes.
Everyone just needs to settle down about it.

You know what's interesting. No one is being forced to buy it. He wrote this book because he wanted to and he was thinking about it long before FOB got famous. He had a journal that he wrote in that became popular and he figured why not write a book with his stories in it. He never meant to capitalize on FOB's fame. I believe he would have came out with the book regardless of FOB fame. Obviously most of his reader's read his journal because of the song. But everyone gets a break somewhere and that was his and he ran with it. You can't fault the man for it. If you don't like the idea don't buy the book it's that simple.

I know it's quite easy to make fun of and judge people who don't know and when you don't have to say it to their faces, but at least if you're going to shit talk, shit talk well and with your facts straight.
First off, he's not 35. Close, but not quite. If you're going to try to put someone down because of their age at least get it right. Otherwise you just look stupid.
Secondly, he does not live off of being in a song. This dude works harder than anyone I know. He has a real job just like everyone else. He does hair and does it well and earns his money and barely gets by.
He's not along for a free ride like some band guy's friends. He doesn't live an extravagant life by any means. He just happened to be good friends with some guys who just happened to make it big and are well known now and used this recognition to share part of his life with people who may or may not care.
If you don't like him, fine. You don't have to. If you've read the book and didn't like it that's fine too. At least you gave it a chance and are sharing your informed opinion. If you haven't read the book or met this guy personally you have no room to talk or judge his character as a person. He has more character and integrity than most people could even dream of having.
I personally liked the book. It may not be well-written, but he has some great stories. Not all of them are about jerking off or shooting things. There are a few heartfelt stories that made me and many other people I know cry. Maybe it's not for everyone though. I think a lot of it has to do with you were brought up. Either you'll get it or you won't. Maybe you won't get it at all or maybe you'll see a little piece of yourself and kids you know in it.
Either way this guy put his heart and soul and most of his money into his book and at least it's sincere.

Yeah i hope you wouldn't open up and talking about whacking off to a fat hooker. And you know what. If a book is published. It deserves to have reviews and be criticized. Don't bitch because people don't like a shitty book. Most people that like the book only like it because they know him. YOu people keep saying oh you odn't know him you haven't talked to him. Jesus christ. I can't believe the nerve of some of you fucking people. Straight up ASSHOLES.
You want to judge a book based on one story of questionable content? Whatever, do it. It's just a book. But I pity those of you that do this and never get a chance to read "April, 1983."
When one says something is "well written," it is an entirely subjective statement. There are shitloads of people who think Palahniuk is a bunch of prettily decorated sentence fragments. There are shitloads of people who think F. L. Block is a bunch of lyrical and flowery nonsensical bullshit. Shakespeare? Iambic prison cells adorned with forced wit. Eggers? All cleverness and no content. There is no end to the countering criticisms.
What it comes down to is taste -- you get it or you don't. I think some of Chris' book is well written, and some of it seems strained. I think some of it is trying too hard, and some of it is perfectly poignant in its honesty. You want to shoot that down? It's just a fucking opinion.
I'm just disgusted by the people that challenge his intentions. You think he's riding FOB's coat tails? That's like... the most disgusting thing I've ever heard. The dude has a fucking revolution in his heart, and you dare challenge his motives? Repulsive; that's what your ignorance is. You seem to enjoy it, though. It's a matter of taste, after all. It doesn't matter in the long run, anyway. It feels good to be part of something bigger than yourself; to dedicate yourself to an idea or a passion, even if a sketchy story about a hooker is at its forefront. If that story is all you see, then you're missing the underlying message, and good fucking riddance to you.
