Two very different schools of thought on this one. Only a few weeks ago the Bengals were cruising and finally got the monkey off beating the Steelers in Pitt. Then, the Steelers got a little healthier and the Bengals went a little sloppy and suddenly the Steelers are FAVORED on the road in the playoffs. So which wins out? Who had the more impressive full season or the team that's been hot over the one that's been a little lazy?
Bengals 34 Steelers 20
Though I'm more for Pitt because I'd rather see the Pats play the Colts in the championship game.

So far it's shown that experience trumps inexperience, and you have to play defense in the playoffs. The Bucs with young players and rookies like Chris Simms, Cadillac, and Alex Smith couldn't get it done against Washington. The Jaguars and Leftwich couldn't do a damn thing in NE. Now the Giants just got owned by Carolina. I wouldn't be surprised in Cincy falls into the same trap. Hardly anyone on that team knows what it's like to play a playoff game, and Palmer has a good chance to choke.

i agree with still_life that the experience could be a factor, but in this case, the Bengals, although they have very little playoff experience, aren't exactly a brand new team like the Giants some others and have been winning well all year up until now. If they come out flat early I think it's the Steelers game, but if the Bengals show life early and play as well as they should, I think they're the better team when push comes to shove.

The Bengals don't play defense, and that'll be their downfall. You can't rely on turnovers to happen in the playoffs, you need to stop offenses. Unless the Bengals score early and often, I don't see how they have a chance today. The Steelers know how to win in the playoffs, while it seems like the Bengals will just be satisfied with getting there finally.
LostSymphonies
01/08/06, 02:15 PM
Cincy's lack of experience is going to be the downfall of them. With Ben healthy the Steelers are set to dominate. Unfortunately, last year for the Steelers Ben was tired, he didn't have a break from draft day til the loss last year.

Exactly, and the Bengals have had their share of lucky ones. They can't expect 4 turnovers from the Steelers this time. They got 4 last time, and only won by 7.

Their defense is terrible, especially down the stretch here. Coming up with so many picks against the NFC North QB's does not mean you play good defense. Did you see them play the Colts? How about the Bills, a team that couldn't even win on the road? The Chiefs did whatever they wanted last week.

I'm not even going to get into my logic here, let's let Bill Simmons speak:
"BENGALS (+3) over Steelers
As far as trilogies go, this one is somewhere between Lewis-Rahman III and Ruiz-Holyfield III. In other words, NFL Films isn't getting the A-team documentary crew ready or anything. With that said, this game gave us the most shocking line of the week (and maybe the whole season); I was 5 points off with my guess on Sunday night. Just five weeks ago, the Steelers were giving 3½ to the Bengals in Pittsburgh, lost the game ... and now they're giving 3 in Cincinnati? Huh?????
Anyway, I see three rules from the Manifesto in play here, including ...
Rule No. 2: When in doubt, seek out the popular opinion and go the other way.
Not to keep bringing this up, but Pittsburgh hosted Cincy with its playoff hopes on the line last month, turned the ball over four times and blew the game ... and then San Diego saved their butts the following week by choking at home to the Dolphins. Everyone forgets this now, just like everyone forgets how Roethlisberger choked for two straight weeks in the playoffs last year. But because the Bengals lost a fluky home game to Buffalo two weeks ago (highlighted by a kick-return TD and an interception TD), then rested everyone in a blowout loss to KC last week, suddenly they're reeling and Pittsburgh is fine? Huh??? This line perplexes me. It's vexing. I'm vexed.
Rule No. 7: When in doubt, research special teams and turnovers.
I'm not crazy about Cincy's special teams, but the Bengals forced a league-leading 44 turnovers this season, including four from Pittsburgh in their Dec. 4th game, and if you don't think this stuff matters in the playoffs, you're crazy. Also, if Cowher has a pattern in January, other than the spit freezing in mid-air as it comes flying from his mouth, it's this -- his teams keep blowing winnable games with dumb interceptions, fumbles and special teams miscues. That's their M.O. I don't see why that would change in Cincy.
Rule No. 8: Beware of the Road Favorite.
The oldest rule in the book. If you're going against a good team at home, you better have a really good reason. I'm not crazy about this Bengals team, but what have the Steelers done, really? They lost to the Pats at home, lost to Jacksonville at home, got killed by Indy on the road, lost to Cincy five weeks ago ... what am I missing here? Just because they beat the Browns by 41 points, I'm supposed to take them as a road favorite against an 11-5 team? No thanks. "

Comparing Carson Palmer to Chris Simms and Eli Manning is stupid. Yes, experience is important but talent has to count for something. Palmer has a hell of a lot more of it than either of the other guys. We're talking about a legit MVP candidate.
With that said, Pittsburgh 34-31. Pittsburgh will hammer away at the Cincy D in a game that goes down to the wire.

Palmer already choked 4 times this year in close games, I don't expect him to step up in the biggest game of his career now. He's had 1 good game out of 4 against this defense.

it was a bad effort, but you're argument that the defense is terrible doesn't fly as much when you realize they it wasn't the defense that let up all 37 points.
the point is you are incapable of giving credit where it's due and need to realize that this defense might not throw shut outs, but they hurt you in other ways (i.e. CAUSING turnovers). can the steelers take care of the ball? absolutely, hell i even already said if the game stays close early they have the edge. but is it the steadfast playoff tested steelers against the careless and overwhelmed bengals like you make it sound? probably not as cut and dry as you make it seem.

It's not just the points against the Bills. Kelly Holcomb had over 300 yards passing, the first time a Bills QB went over that mark in like 3 seasons.
Relying on turnovers is a classic sign of a bend but don't break defense, the kind that usually break in the face of a good team. Bengals have 99-04 Colts written all over them, with a dash of 03 Chiefs thrown in. Great offense, but the defense won't show up when it counts.

seriously. he played great during palmer's rookie year.

He threw for over 3500 yards just 2 seasons ago and had a QB rating of 87.4. Palmer didnt even have to compete for the job after that season despite Kitna's numbers. Obviously Palmer is a great QB and he's the guy for Cincy, but Kitna can freakin' play. I'd trade a 3rd or 4th round pick for the guy if I needed a quick fix at QB.
