Anyone ever build their own acoustic treatment?

I've got a nearly complete studio, with only one of most crucial things missing...


Acoustic treatment. I'm gonna go ahead and skip buying it, because it's damn over priced.

I've found plans online (sketchy, rough plans, but they're plans nonetheless) to build bass traps etc.

The price for the materials is NOTHING close to buying the real thing, hence the "advantage".

Has anyone EVER tried to build their own treatment? If so, you got any pointers?

I'm going to be doing some of that this summer, but unfortunately I never have done something like this before.
I saw a couple of helpful youtube videos, so that's probably what I'll do.

Since you'll want to use Rockwool or OC 703/705 fiberglass, the price to diy it is really not much different than buying from say GIK acoustics. I'd price out all the materials you'd use, then look at room kit 1 at GIK and weigh the pros and cons.

teh advantage to gik's stuff is obv the they are already built part, but also less shipping costs due to all in one batch of stuff, and their traps are designed to have an air gap behind the material (Rockwool, in GIK's case.) having an air gap essentially allows the trap to absorb more reflections. the GIK traps are framed in wood- so it goes 4" mineralwool framed in 6" wood frame, leaves a 2 inch air gap whilst allowing the trap to be flush on the wall. very professional.

I've budgeted for room kit one from GIK, and I'm also planning to build large Gobos out off bookshelves, rockwool, burlap, and casters. four seven foot diy gobos and 11 traps from GIK for under a grand? hell yes.
