Curse words in songs is not a big deal to me. I just wouldn't want my 5-10 year old going to school and cursing up a storm. And I would hope the music is not horrible. But then again the pretentious side of me thinks I'll just act like a total dick if he/she likes shitty music.

Honestly, I will closely pay attention to what types of music my children consume. Music is one of the most important things in my life and while I don't want to necessarily control what my kids do and don't listen to, I'm not going to be buying/paying for any shitty music to be played in my house. Mostly, I've just noticed that people who listen to certain types of music are typically more intellectually well balanced. For instance, none of my professors listen to the radio or any kind of scene music. Luckily for me, I really enjoy folk, indie, and classical (and I have a sweet tooth for hip-hop but that's beside the point). I just really want to steer my kids in the direction of being decent human beings.

I am sure unless I show my kids a lot of the music I listen to they will never ever hear it, because quite frankly as much as I enjoy some of the bands that I do... will they really still be around 15-20 years from now? Probably not, most of the music these days is fad-ish anyway, so I am sure there will be another 10 year period with a different genre of music that they will discover. AND I will have no idea about any of it, because I will have a life to focus on. I realize music is key to growing up to be who you are, but at some point, you realize it isn't life.

Therefore, I will just let them do what they do, and I will probably just think back to how I was with my parents and remember that they will do what they do, regardless of what guidelines I try to set for them. With music, that seems pointless.
