Both have linear storylines woven into the album, so which one do you like better in terms of music, lyrics, or storyline?

it's hard for me to listen to American Idiot all the way through, as intended, because radio super-killed the singles, so it's still kind of hard for me to listen to those as a whole. i've only listened to 21CB a handful of times so far, and i've not been bombarded by it, media-wise, so i guess maybe it wins?

i dunno. i'm torn.
i do think, however, that "whatsername" is one of green day's best songs.

21st century breakdown is the only pop-punk(ish) album released in quite along time (ever?) that i can actually say i fully enjoy. i love this album a lot. while american idiot is tolerable and socially significant, it doesn't hold a place in my heart like this new one does. viva la gloria and peacemaker are especially good tracks.

American Idiot is better because it was so new and it was such a hit; the story was great and everything was put together brilliantly.

I think too much of 21st Century Breakdown tries to recapture the magic of American Idiot, but it simply can't.

I like 21CB more even though I'm not a big fan of both.

21st century breakdown is the first green day that i cant listen to more than once....the first green day CD that im not jacked about at first listen. My friend said to try it again...i never had to do that for previous albums.

Prior to the radio and world overplaying American Idiot to death, it really was a superb album that was something way different than previous Green Day albums. A great mixture of the fast, harmonical, slow was all seen on American Idiot, where as 21st Century Breakdown says, "all the things you liked about green day...forget it...we're doing a different sort of sound". Oh? Well then, hmm nah.

you're kidding me, right? you praised AI for being unlike past green day albums, but hold it against them on the new one? i can not see that logic. and it would of been an okay comment, i would have said to myself "you know, domo has a different opinon, but i can't fault him for preference." but you had to add that "oh? well then, hmm nah" bit. like you have a legitimate reason to be mad at them for being inventive and expanding on their new sound.

So far I'd definitely say AI, but I've only listened to the new one twice.

I think right now, AI. I listened to that album so much Freshman year of high school, and I've only gotten in a couple listen's of 21CB.

i worded that wrong. American Idiot went in a different direction in the scope of the Green Day sound.....as in 21st century breakdown, its clear that they're going for a more "plain rock" vibe, which i simply dont like. It's not the Green Day sound that ive grown to love...its like, hmm Kaiser chiefs (not using them just because they're touring with them)...which is a band im not a fan of.

i still enjoy the new album more. but everyone has their own opinion.

good day, domo.

I have the same thoughts. 21st Century Breakdown has some duds that I doubt will grow on me. Whereas I can still listen to American Idiot in its entirely (although a few songs are way overplayed thanks to radio.)

Even though I'm not the biggest fan of both, 21st Century Breakdown has better songs, and imo, is more Green Day than American Idiot. American Idiot feels too political or just too i dont know, angry, too serious, too much of an agenda or too gimmicky, there's something about American Idiot that just doesn't sit well with me, i think it's just too serious, too much. 21st Century sort of feels like Nimrod, like a big sort of collection of songs. I don't know how to explain it, but 21st century just feels more Green Day to me. I dont know, I just remember being able to listen to Dookie, Insomniac, Nimrod with a sort of playful smile (moreso Dookie). I think 21st century captures that sort of playful Green Day again, even though I think some of it is too epic.

Both albums were bad, but if I had to go with one, I'd go with AI

Agreed.
It's easily one of my favorite new Green Day songs.

Now that I understand the story present on 21st Century Breakdown, I like the way it weaves in and out more than the theme on American Idiot.

21CB is a better album to me, though it's probably because I played the hell out of AI and got tired of it.

21st century breakdown is too long to be seriously enjoyed, and(admittedly after only one listen) sounds bland anyway. American idiot is OK.
