What does everyone think of the UN? Are the a useful tool for world peace, or a defunct group of sqabbleing idiots?
Personally the UN scares me. It seems that their purpose is to destroy every soverign nation and bring them under the iron fist of the UN. Kofi Annan sees himself as the president of the world, and he's doing what he can to get in the way of the one nation that's standing up to his rule: the United States. Here's some interesting information: the UN charter allows for free speech, religion assembly, etc. All of this is with one exception: if your speech, religion, or assembly gets in the way of the purpose or goals of the UN, you can be punished. So, basically, you have no free speech. The UN will never work they way it is put together. In my opinion, the United States should withdraw from the United Nations and from a new internation body that is not so much for designing laws, but more for operating as a forum between countries.

the UN is useless. they only worthy thing they do is their humanitarian aid work, but other than that they are becoming more and more irrelevant as proven by the current crisis. if france veto's the next resolution it will make a farce out of the security council, they signed resolution 1441 which demanded Iraq disarm or face serious consequences. the vote isn't whether or not we should go to war, its whether or not Iraq has met those requirements. If France veto's, it is essentially saying yes, they have met the requirements. Obviously they have not, and thus the security council will hold no sway whatsoever in future events. what country would abide by a security council resolution if it knows that it won't be punished even after 18 resolutions go unfollowed?

How logically though out can an orginization be when the course of the world lies in the hands of Ginuea, which is currently in the security council. Nations like that have no real power, but can decide what the rest of the world does. How much sense does that make?

How long does everyone think it will be until the UN will be generally regarded as defunct? I'll give it 6 months.

ask the rwandan's what they think about the UN. the "peacekeepers" ran away and let 800,000 people die. or the 2 million cambodians that were killed under Pol Pot.

ok..the logic behind guinea is the idea that all nations are created equal. so all nations have an equal vote. kind of like the idea that all states are equal regardless of population so they all have equal number of senators. now are you saying that the united states senate is illogical?

You're right, the Senate isn't especially logical. However, the difference between, say, Ginuea and the Germany is so huge that it is completely rediculous to pretend that they have the same power.

The UN "twiddles it's collective thumbs" when the US tells it to. We didn't think it was economically benefitial to go into Cambodia, Rwanda, or East Timor, so the UN didn't order any action to be taken.

the UN went into rawanda, and the belgium peacekeepers ran away and let 800,000 rawandans die. it was a royal fuck up on the UN's part.
also, when milosevic was commiting genocide the UN wouldn't go in and do anything about it, so the US was forced to go in with out UN support.

no they fucking suck.
they are a hypocritical organization. it never works, they never agree, we spend millions of dollars by stationing troops in remote locations, but then, when the country is actually attack, politically correct scandal bullshit comes into play which fucks up the operation.

Wasn't that a NATO campaign? Regardless, it was the citzens of Kosovo who overthrew Milosevic, not the US.

yeah, NATO took on the cause after the UN failed to take action (since many of the NATO countries that surround the Bosnia area were requesting help)...and again, it was France that refused to support military action in the balkans.
also, the US bombing of Milsovic's allowed the people overthrow milosovic's regime and bring him to trial.

Well, I think that Bush's decision to go into Iraq finalized the UN's futility. Good riddance.
