Sorry I haven't posted in the sports forum much in the past couple days so I'm pretty behind on posting on some matters. But can anyone tell me why he isn't a HOF member? He was much more dominant then any closer of his time, and his stats for a closer even at that time are remarkable.
The baseball writers are saying it is because he didn't win a MVP or Cy Young but should they be voting on the mistakes that were made at that time? Is it Gossage's fault that he didn't win a Cy Young or the voters of that time.
Gossage 22 Years 124 Wins 107 Losses 310 Saves 1809.3 IP 1502 Strikeouts 3.01 ERA 119 HR
Sutter 12 Years 68 Wins 71 Losses 300 Saves 1042.3 IP 861 Strikeouts 2.83 ERA 77 HRs
While people will point out that Sutter clearly was on the way to more saves, people don't take into consideration that Gossage didn't get nearly as many chances to pitch as Sutter did. Plus Sutter had a much shorter career. Goose was a dominant closer for 11 years and serviceable relief pitcher for 5 years where as Sutter was a solid closer for 9 and thats it. I'm not saying Sutter isn't a Hall of Famer, but so is Goose.
The Balloting is really terrible because it is clear that guys like Jim Rice, Andre Dawson, and Bert Blyleven should be in the hall. If Kirby Puckett is in the HOF how are Rice and Dawson not? If Don Sutton is a HOF how isn't Blyleven? The Baseball Writers are absolutely terrible and complete hypocrites. Just because guys like Rice and Goose weren't the friendliest of guys they don't get in. If you rank a person by MVP then why aren't Dawson and Rice in? They have great stats comprable to many Hall of Famers and they have an MVP so why not?
I say horse shit. The Baseball Writers are the biggest hypocrites in America.
