I had a conflicting decision for this I think I pressed 'The Clash' (partly because I can hear them right now...) and then the vote button but then changed my mind and pressed 'The Ramones' and the vote button so i'm not sure which I voted for...
But I think that the competition is only between The Clash and The Ramones, Sex Pistols ARE a good band but they aren't The Ramones or The Clash and they are both the better bands.

The Ramones and Sex Pistols dont have SHIT on Joe Strummer. I believe in freedom of thought but there's no way that anyone who knows a thing about alternative music or punk rock could honestly say otherwise. They invented punk closely followed by the other 2 bands. Also, the band's sound actually progressed and expanded, taking influences from across the globe instead of consistently sticking to one sound. I have some respect for the Sex Pistols and The Ramones, but I honestly haven't ever felt the need to listen to The Ramones since I was in Jr. High although I still love Johnny Rotten. (What's more punk rock than turning an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame down?). The Ramones messages weren't all very punk rock and they remind me of The Beatles at times, (One of the major bands that punk rock was resisting) Take their song "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend". I have a standard for anyone whom I speak to regarding music: If you don't even like one song by The Clash, you're not competent enough to have a conversation with. Their music varies so much even with their first album and if you actually listened to their whole catalogue, I just can't fathom how someone could be disappointed with every track. Their music will NEVER leave the radiowaves and even in 500 years the Clash would still be more relevant than the other 2 bands listed above. For anyone who disagrees I recommend that you watch The Future Is Unwritten, a documentary about Joe Strummer, the greatest punk rocker to ever live (may he rest in peace).

I always felt like punk was more of a resistance against the big arena rock and overblown progressive rock of the 70's. I'd say punk was more against Led Zeppelin or Rush than it was against The Beatles.
